Anything that involves giving out sensitive information AND sounds urgent (i.e giving deadlines) is so OBVIOUSLY a scam. It's as clear as the blue sky.

That people still fall for it amazes me.

One other thing you can do is to type the actual address of your bank in full from their print material then bookmark that page so whenever you wish to visit your bank's website, you load it from the bookmark.
I hope the OP and others who receive similar messages flag those sites as phishing sites since Chrome and most other popular browsers have that ability. This should at least give people a pause when visiting that site even if it is from a link. And if you're free, you could also report that site to the bank.

@ Deepsoul

That is exactly the RED FLAG, an URGENT REQUEST to update SENSITIVE information (password / pin number or username) through a supplied link!!!  If you MUST change / update anything about your account, please walk into
your branch and deal with the appropriate official. NEVER respond to any such requests online. Period!!!

but why is it most times gtb,
I think this question has been answer in the thread. My transaction with GTB is like 99% online.

Most hacker are always after high profile organisation. e.g Sony, Apple, Bank of America, Paypal, ebay, Amazon etc
Users are to be very careful. Some people just put their details into any freebie online which is very wrong.

To stay safe:
1. Don't update your account details online, go to your banking hall.
2. Never use your online banking access on PUBLIC COMPUTER, very very important. Use it only private PC or Mobile device
3. Keep your PIN and banking access in your HEAD, avoid writing it somewhere
4. Separate your online banking profile email from your social or secular emails. This might not be of much importance, but it is anextra precaution from me in case social networking junkies hack into your email.
But the both websites come from same
domain. GTBANK.COM . am i missing
something. As gtbank.com been hacked?
Something is fishy. Cause i dont know how a
hacker should get access to a subdomain
sending mails with that and you still call it fraud.
Its and inwork stuff by one of those workers at
the it center not fraud. But all the same apply
caution
NOT necessarily true. A little research into how subdomains can be "piggybacked" will make you paranoid

a very simple method is called DNS POISONING.

If i have access to your pc (eg through a virus) or the servers of your isp (cybercafe, swift, mtn, etc) it is very easy to send requests for xyz.com to abc.net

What this means is that xyz.com (gtb) is not neccessarily responsible for the error.

It could be caused by a virus on your pc, or those of your network provider.

Other methods exist, but they are obviously beyond the scope of this thread.

Get your pen and pad to learn some things about internet security vulnerabilities. . . .

If you you log on to your online bank account that is not encapsulated, experienced bad boys can hijack your session and disconnect you from from communicating to your bank servers and continue on your behalf.
The only realistic solution to totally avoid being attacked online is not to do online banking which is not possible in this modern day.

Another way to mitigate such attacks is to only log on to your bank with https, this shows your session is secured through tunneling and the chance of having a man-in-the-middle or replay attacks become minimal.

Be safe online. wink
