@GboyagaD It is true that some of the Prof are not trying but the fact still remain that we need them. In some area of specialiazation in a department only one old Prof might be the expert and the Prof who receive training abroad might not have train a young replacement becos of lack of basic things like electricity, good Microscope and personel (TECHNICIAN). Do you know that retired lab technician are recalled into the system because the young once cannot handle the basic equipment. The story is that our graduates are not grounded in their area of specialization because we do not have basic equipment and because all they want is to pass out. This Assu strike will tend to address all this pressing issues. Our UNIVERSITIES are dieing and people are busy stealing FG BLIND. |

oc2fish:u're making a good point n 2 an extent dis strike is justified but dese lecturers should also remove d speck 4rm deir eye b4 trying 2 remove d log in ours. Dey are also part of d reasons while some tins are d way dey are in d universities. I rememba how much my sis spent on her supervisor wen writing her project n it wasn't lyk she wasn't doing d right tin. Anyway dis idea of 70yrs is still 4ny 2 me,wat will a 69yrs old man able 2 do very well? Check properly n tell me if he'll still b interested in tutoring d younger ones? Anyway it's 2 late because it's already a law. I just hope ASUU n FG would do d right tin n dis incessant strikes will finally stop. As dey say 'dere is an entry date in2 d Nigerian university but no exit date' |

They better don't call off the strike if their demands are not met. We've already gone 2months lets's finish it once and for all so that we will be hoping that the next 10year of academic work won't be marred by ASSU and FG strike |

oc2fish: How many of the profs were trained abroad? In the department I finished from, we have mainly 2 who studied abroad and they are really not into lecturing anymore. Often times, people attain professorship by connection in recent times and not publication so there really isn't any reason why they should stay. Now they should be fighting for improvement of facilities and not just sitting there and earning unjust salaries in most cases. |

if ASUU can call off their 2 month lingering strike, I blieve not only the studens but also the parent would be happy with them. Though what they did is what the federal government deserve. thank you ASUU for the giant move |

Sorry guys Another local chapter just vote to continue so ASSU is still on strike. The piont is that in 2009 the FG promise ASSU increased funding but uptil now they did nothing. Do you know that in the negotiation they are putting it to ASSU as if they are the Father xmas giving just little to the lap-dog, while GEJ is busy using 18 billion for lubrication. and N2.1 million for facebook acct in the football house I do sympathize with the students but men of moral should know that graduating unskilled graduate is a crime to humanity Graduating Enginers that do not know how to use current software to design is a crime. Graduating fisheries student that cannot use the wrs system to culture fish is a crime. How about computer enginers that Ikeja computer village boys can scorn or An Automoblle Enginer that cannot change plug. In those days at Ibadan once their is a power outage we will start counting b4 the count of ten they will restore light now the Vc, Dean and Hod run on personel Gen SET. Living the Lab and research with no electricity and to DIE. SO HOW DO WE PROGRESS |

I guess the meeting between ASUU NEC has not ended yet, hopefully before the end of today, we will know what their decision is, so lets wait till they finish and hear from the ASUU chairman himself that the strike continues, and stop raising unnecessary feelings, God bless Nigeria. |

oc2fish: I will assume you are either a lecturer or u are in position of authority in a school system, it shows your view and opinion is tilted towards supporting your cause, and this is the lie you have been feeding the public and everybody to draw sympathy towards you. Let me make it clear, i have a parent that is a lecturer in the same school i was admitted, i tell her openly of the disgust i have for some clear lecturers, u neglected all the points i made about lecturers and you could only comment that it takes a lot to become a professor. Ok for you to become a professor. 1. you must harass innocent girls and students 2. Elongate your retirement age to 70yrs 3. Take Bribes from students 4. Not come to class until 2weeks to exam and rush students 5. Go on immediate strike on any excuse, not minding the effect on the students 6. Focus on your other jobs and less on the students you are teaching. etc If i should continue, i will be on it for 2hrs, there is nothing you can tell me that will convince me to be on the side of the lecturers, because they are very very unsincere and selfish, they have no regard for the welfare of students hurry to graduate with no employable skill Until i spend 9yrs in school for a 4yr course, rubbish Our certificate is look down on because of people like you who all that is important is the paper and not the understanding of the subject matter Yes, and whose fault is it, when our lecturers/professors will be using the same material they were taught with in their school days without updating, and they pass the same knowledge to me. Look am not here condemning all professors/lecturers, but the main fact is that most of them are pure evil and bad, i will say a ratio of 70% bad to 30% good, Please look deeply into all these issues and be objective to your self, am i far from the truth |
Re: ASUU To Call Off Strike On Wednesday by oc2fish: 5:58pm On Jan 31, 2012 |
@Freeman To become a Prof in Nigeria you need 6yrs of serious full time study to get a PhD And lecture in a University for 15yrs. that means that for 21yrs after your first degree you have been reading and researching. It takes so much to produce this expert and this Prof can only specialise in one aspect of a course of study. In Fisheries mgt for instante we have 10 sub specialisation GEJ is an espert in Fisheries and Hydrobiology while somebody like me is on Genetics and Breeding As a genetics I need to know how to collect the DNA of fish so that I can be able improve the fish in terms of size and quality. No lab in Nigeria University has this facility, if I do not know how, how will the student i am suppose to teach know. It is a lose lose situation. we are crying for lost of knowledge in our University and you want paper without skill W |

Letter: On ASUU strike Ewebiyi James SIR: I read with utter dismay the baseless statements made by some students accusing the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of being selfish, stubborn and inconsiderate in the current move to resolve the two-month old dispute with the Federal Government. I wish to state that when other means of negotiation have been used without success, the only option left to workers is strike. These other means have never worked with the Nigerian government. Let us not forget that ASUU has been on this struggle for over five years now and the government has been foot-dragging all this while. Public universities were shut down for four months in 2009 over this same issue. Let us not also forget that ASUU embarked on a warning strike last year and later gave the government a two-month ultimatum before they embarked on an indefinite strike. The truth is that the only language Nigerian government understands is strike. Workers have to embark on strike to have their demands met. In the words of Martin Luther King Jnr "Freedom is never willingly given by the oppressor, it must be demanded and fought for by the oppressed". Under this present system, workers will continue to down tools to get government's attention. More so, the demands of ASUU are in the interest of students because if these demands are fully met, it will reposition the university system. The demands include adequate funding, genuine autonomy, academic freedom and better conditions of service. We need a government that is more responsive to the needs and aspirations of the poor and working people. Labour unions, civil society, students, artisans etc. should begin the process to form a poor and working peoples' party that will wrestle power from the capitalist thieving ruling elite in the coming election in order to effect the socialist transformation of our dear country. Ewebiyi James, Lagos. |
