Research in Motion (RIM) is best known as the manufacturer of BlackBerry devices. RIM has its headquarters in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and is engaged in the production of BlackBerry devices, BlackBerry wireless solution, hardware and software development tools. Generally, Blackberry products stand for information, intranet, Web browsing and associated applications, e-mail, instant messaging, voice and SMS.

RIM was established in 1984 by Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin as electronics and computer science consulting outfit. By 1988, RIM had parterned with RAM Mobile Data and Ericsson to convert a network built by Ericsson into a 2-way paging and wireless e-mail network. Nevertheless, that was before RIM started manufacturing BlackBerry handheld devices. Before RIM introduced a device with phone service, they had been involved in provision of information and communication solutions such basic email, wireless radio modems, software developer's kit, paging system, peer-to-peer messages, faxes and text-to-voice messages and other services which they still provide today.

It was not until 2002 that RIM introduced its first BlackBerry device with phone service and always-on e-mail connectivity. The device was BlackBerry 5810. The device had capacity for voice and data transmission. RIM has continued to add new product features, introduce new models and services, and acquire or partner with technology providers. BlackBerry products and services are used by millions of customers around the world to stay connected to the people and content that matter most throughout their day.
