Logic Mind:

as SE does not contribute anything to nigeria, can they be allowed to go and form their own country?

Olodo, if Nigeria stops producing oil today, the largest revenue earner for the government comes from the contribution of Easterners, custom and excise duties. What does that tell you?

Easterners contribute the largest and the bulk of revenue earner, oil.
Easterners contribute the second largest, which is custom and excise duties.

Then what does the SW contribute?

Most of the palm oil you eat in Nigeria (North and Lagos) comes from states such as Imo, Abia, Anambra and the SS states (minus Bayelsa)

Nchara:

That is how they claim grin grin grin grin grin. They only own local champions like Punch, Tribune and Nation. The really big papers are owned by SS (many Igbo by origin) and SE people.
Apart from the oil selling companies which we now know are thieving cabals, I do not remember any notable company owned by a Yoruba.
Glo is owned by IBB and not Adenuga. Most companies in Lagos are owned by outsides or by the public (all Nigerians0 r are multi nationals

My brother, what we are seeing here is the sort of blind jealousy that is the product of a useless set of leaders. What exemplary behaviour can come from those who pitch their tent with a drug baron and serial forger as leader? A subsidy thieving mongrel that has made ethnic bigotry a campaign tool?

Like leader, like follower; the followers will only begin to behave like drug barons, serial forgers and ethnic bigots. We can see the direct result on the streets with NURTW and area boys taking over and OPC matching with guns and matchettes in public.
When the followers look around and see that they are occupying the ditch their leaders shat in; na HEAVY jealousy dem go begin take wound us na! grin

No surprises.

A tiny example of Igbo contribution to Nigeria. Over 50% of the names are Igbo. Some of the English names on the lists could also be Igbo people. How many Yoruba? This has been the trend since Adam.

1. Apart from South-south, the South-west has the highest IGR for Nigeria miuns Lagos and followed by the SW

2. Cocoa is the second highest foreign ezchange earner in Nigeria while rubber is third and the fourth is palm oil of which are all produced in the SW region and cowpea/soyabean are firth are produced in the north

The agricultural products of Nigeria can be divided into two main groups: food crops, produced for home consumption, and export products. Prior to the civil war, the country was self-sufficient in food, but imports of food increased substantially after 1973. Bread, made primarily from US wheat, replaced domestic crops as the cheapest staple food for much of the urban population. The most important food crops are yams and manioc (cassava) in the south and sorghum (Guinea corn) and millet in the north. In 1999, production of yams was 25.1 million tons (67% of world production); manioc, 33.1 million tons (highest in the world and 20% of global production); cocoyams (taro), 3.3 million tons; and sweet potatoes, 1,560,000 tons. The 1999 production estimates for major crops were as follows (in thousands of tons): sorghum, 8,443; millet, 5,457; corn, 5,777; rice, 3,399; peanuts, 2,783; palm oil, 842; sugar cane, 675; palm kernel, 565; soybeans, 405; and cotton lint, 57. Many fruits and vegetables are also grown by Nigerian farmers.

Although cocoa is the leading non-oil foreign exchange earner grown in the southwest, growth in the sector has been slow since the abolition of the Nigerian Cocoa Board. The dominance of smallholders in the cocoa sector and the lack of farm labor due to urbanization holds back production. Nigeria has the potential to produce over 300,000 tons of cocoa beans per year, but production only amounted to 145,000 tons in 1999. Rubber is the second-largest non-oil foreign exchange earner. Despite favorable prices, production has fallen from 155,000 tons in 1991 to 90,000 tons in 1999. Low yield, aging trees, and lack of proper equipment have inhibited production.

@POST

All these bloody ninnies should rain curses on their misguided forebears who fought on the Nigerian side during Nigeria/Biafra civil war. If they had allowed Biafra to secede from Nigeria, the bandwidth wasted on this silly discussion should have been used for something better.

In fact, if these deluded and loudmouthed jackasses could still summon the courage needed to support the group agitating for actualization of Biafra, there should be no headache accrued in contemplating the contribution of SE to the junk called Nigeria.

I should not want the SE to contribute anything economically or otherwise towards the growth of the cesspit called Nigeria. SE should manage to remain afloat on the rudderless vessel named Nigeria while bidding its time to jump off ship.

Rivers States employs more people than Kano because of concentration of oil industry in the state.

The guy you are responding to is a stark illiterate.
Even with the bigger populatin, how many people are working in kano and paying taxes compared to Rivers?
Most are illiterate, the women wont even be allowed to work.

The truth is that people  are confused here, Are ppl talking about SE or SS states or the ppl of origin SE/SS, , Do you mean what the people from the area contribute to Nigeria or you mean the state.

Going by Rhino's claim that Igbos living in Kano (I mean people who gain nothing from the Govt of Kano) are parasites, it means anybody anywhere not in his natural homeland is a parasite.
All Nigerians in the USA, UK etc are parasites and so are all Americansm British elsewhere other than their countries
So are Yorubas in Kano, PH (including Rhino himself), Igboland, and elsewhere.

All of these stats/numbers being thrown around are pure conjectures.  Contrary to general opinion, the Northern states are not doing too badly with Kano, Kaduna leading the pack in the North. Lagos by far outstrips every other state by a wide margin.

If you exclude Oil and Gas, the northern states are better off than a lot of Southern states. In the South, if you exclude Oil and Gas sectors - Lagos,  Delta, Rivers, Oyo, Ondo, Edo and Imo are the clear winners. In the North, Kano, Kaduna, Benue, Plateau, and Kogi are doing well. Delta  and Rivers appear to be doing very well even without oil.  Ebonyi is the worst of South followed by Ekiti. Taraba is the worst of North, closely followed by Yobe, Zamfara,

Here is the raw data for year 2000 by National Bureau of Stats. It is in PDF format; perhaps, Ekt_bear or someone else can find a way to import it to Excel and then tabulate it.
The stats capture every sector and it's official.

It is silly to say that some regions are not contributing to the State because they do not have oil. Oil accounts for only for about 25 percent of our GDP, Agriculture is still the clear leader despite years of Neglect.

Anyway, here is the PDF. It is for year 2000,  the progression is by and large the same pattern with +10 or-10 deviation.
