Ogun Scraps Education Varsity, Merges Polys

Ogun State Government has scrapped the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, while it has merged the four Information and Communication Technology polytechnics in the state.

The state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. John Odubela, at a press conference in Abeokuta on Wednesday announced the scrapping of TASUED and merger of the ICT-based polytechnics in the state.

Odubela said TASUED had been converted to an institute with immediate effect and now affiliated to the Faculty of Education of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye.

The commissioner directed TASUED authorities to stop further admission of students, especially for the 2012/2013 academic session.

He added that the university campus would be immediately relocated to Omu-Ijebu, which is the current site of another state-owned institution, Tai Solarin College of Education, while TASCE would be moved to Ijagun.

He explained that the state government had decided to merge the four ICT polytechnics and create a new institution from them to be called Ogun State Institute of Technology.

The ICT polytechnics, which were established in 2006 include Kesington Adebutu ICT Polytechnic, Saapade; Abraham Adesanya ICT Polytechnic, Ijebu-Igbo; D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori; and Ayodeji Otegbola ICT Polytechnic, Igbesa.

The commissioner stated that Igebsa would serve as the main campus of the new Ogun State Institute of Technology while Saapade, Ijebu-Igbo and Itori would operate as satellite campuses.

He said the Egbado Teachers’ Training College, Ilaro, has been renamed Ayodeji Otegbola Teachers’ Training College “in order to still keep that name – Ayo Otegbola”

Odubela explained that the government decisions were taken following the recommendation of the Special Committee set up by Governor Ibikunle Amosun to review the reports of visitation panels to the various institutions.

The special committee, according to him, was headed by the Deputy Governor, Mr. Segun Adesegun.

In a swift reaction, TASUED students protested against the “demotion” of their institution and demanded immediate reversal of the policy by government in the interest of peace.

Chanting various anti-government slogans, the students, who stormed the secretariat of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Abeokuta, alleged that the scrapping of their school was in bad faith.

Addressing journalists on behalf of the protesters, the Students Union President, Abdullahi Oyekanmi, debunked claims that most of the courses offered in TASUED were not education-related.

He contended that if the institution had been found wanting in terms of quality, manpower and infrastructural development, the National Universities Commission would have revoked its accreditation.

He said, “If they are really committed to education – education is the bedrock of any development – then they rebuild and revamp the collapsed infrastructure. Giving excuses of unavailability of fund is not an excuse. We know our governor, probably some people have been advising him; he should not listen to their advice. This decision should therefore be reversed.”

A good move that can backfire if OOU is not improved upon. But I thought Tasued was better that OOU (which was a hub for cults and badt gals last time I checked)

This is welcome development. As a former staff of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), we've always known that Tai Solarin University, the Ibogun, Ikenne and Ayetoro campuses of OOU were created because of the 2nd term politics of OGD, even though that was the original idea of the founding fathers. Infact he was even promising to upgrade the Ibogun and Ayetoro campus to University. Now the whole project has collapse because they are not sustainable. The main campus of OOU was grossly underfunded while the other campuses of the University were glorified secondary school. I just hope the Amosun would do a proper reorganisation to bring back the lost glory of OOU.

The last time you checked right ? Good because things have changed very much , OOU is currently the sixth/seventh?(not very sure in between the two) best university in Nigeria according to recent ratings . I am a student of the school and I can proudly tell you that things have changed though some things still need to be addressed and remedied . Check again dude things have changed .

@Topic , it's a very good and welcome development , the schools in Ogun state are so much that the government can't attend to all of their needs hence incessant strikes , malfunctions etc Bravo !! now that they are merged they can be catered for adequately .

Gov. Amousun decision to scrap Tai Solarin University and merge 4 IT Polytechnics is ill timed, mischievous, political motivated, sentimental, vendettaism  and abuse of power. and if care is not taken, this unpopular decision will boomerang and likely cause disaffection among people of ogun state. I .think the Gov. is not in his right frame of mind and is power drunk.

ACN politicises everything in this country. Besides, lack of policy continuation
will kill us. It is very clear that this reversal is political, just because these tertiary
institutions were set up by Gbenga Daniel.

If I may ask, why can't the institutions be funded sufficiently?
The former governor identified education as one area of strenght of Ogun
state and decided to build on that.Education is big business around the world.
Ask Britain, Canada or even our neighbour Ghana what it rakes in from Education.
Why can't Amosun build on this to make Ogun the Education hub of Nigeria and even Africa.

Good move by Ogun state ACN governor IF he actively promotes vocational schools and qualifications starting with employment in the state civil service and parastatals as well as credible SME (Small and Medium Enterprises) policy.
Otherwise na another waste.

Let's keep a close watch on Ibikunle Amosun make im nor go open another one for im village like Odechukwu Retardeen cassava-bread-eating Joe did to establish  OTUOKE university and five others.
Meanwhile existing federal universities have become glorified high schools dishing out degrees only with regular strikes by lecturers for non-respect of agreements by the FG.

i honestly see no sense in criticising Amosun for this wonderful decision of his. Why should a state like Ogun still recovering from Daniel's mismanagement have two public universities among several institutions (private/FG). Its a big drain to the purse of the state. Instead, he has decided to merge them together for effective management.
As at the last count, below are some of the universities/ higher institutions being hosted by Ogun.

University of Agriculture, Abeokuta   FG
Covenant University, Ota                  PV
Bell University of Technology, Ota    PV
Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye   ST
Redeemer's University (RUN), Redemption Camp of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Mowe  PV
Babcock University, Ilisan Remo       PV
Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode   ST
Crawford University, Igbesa      PV
Adetokunbo University, Sagamu    PV
Crescent University, Abeokuta      PV

Remember that the list above does not even include the polytechnics refereed to in the report

I never knew Gateway Polytechnic Igbesa has been changed to Ayodeji Otegbola ICT Polytechnic, Igbesa. And now they are merging again. So what would the students certificate bear? I mean the old students?

Honestly speaking this move is purely political and reason is not improve education in anyway,it is a means of getting Gbenga Daniels,if any of you have been to TASUED then you will know it has all the infrastructure and manpower to operate as a college of education, but definitely more than an institute, playing politics with education and people's future is definitely a dumb and whacked move,It their really any difference between political parties?just when you think one is better than the other, they just f up big time, for me this is an absolute rubish move,

Re: Ogun Scraps Tai Solarin University & Merges Four IT Polytechnics by kayusbrown(m): 2:12pm On Feb 09, 2012
Good move. The psyche of the average Nigerian student has been damaged by over-depence on certificate. Aptitude and competence have been relegated to the background while certificates are glorified and seen as meal ticket. This damaged psyche fuels all sorts of desperate moves to acquire certificates (especially University degrees) regardless of the fact that the institutions issuing such certificates are ill-equipped and run outdated syllabuses that add little or no value to their students. No wonder Nigerian Certificates are worthless in the US and UK. Establishing more universities and polytechnics only proliferate such substandard institutions. The global practice is to maintain a single university with multiple campuses if necessary (campuses are usually established based on the need of its immediate community e.g the establishment of a technological institute of a university in a predominantly industrial area) under a vibrant and qualified staff. Havard University is an example. The Nigerian Tertiary education system, as operated presently, lacks purpose! Reforms like this is a step in the right direction.

9ice move by Gov. Ibikunle Amosun. Two state university, many polytechnics nd so on. Is d state capable of funding all d state owned institutions? Since the state can not fund them then one out of it can not stand firmly as university or polytechnics etc. Such fin happen at ekiti state wia segun oni establish one university(USTI) nd upgraded college of education ikere ekiti to university with existing unad making three universities 4 a state among d states wit less allocation. THAT IS GOOD MOVE TO MINIMIZE D INSTITUTIONS TO A LIMITED NUMBER OF STANDARD ONES.

For you all commending this decision of the Ogun State Government, i don't think you are putting the affected student into consideration.
What will be the fate of the alumni and undergraduates of this Nigeria Premier University of Education?
Will the certificates of graduates from this school be valid again?
What will the certificates of the undergraduates carry?
These and some others are the question we need to ask oursleves before jumping into conclusion if it worth commending.

Nothing will happen to the alumnis and undergraduates will be fine. The govt simply ask the schools to stop new admission and not that the undergrads will be sent packing. also employers of labour who have employed members of the alumni can simply sack them becos their schools no longer exist with a particular name on their cert.

Will the certificates of graduates from this school be valid again?

Why not? Those that had the University of Ife cert still uses it till date despite the fact that the school has since been renamed OAU.

What will the certificates of the undergraduates carry?

That is the easiest part and am sure those in authority would have figured out what to do.
These and some others are the question we need to ask oursleves before jumping into conclusion if it worth commending.

Dont be scared. this isnt an issue of "it hasnt been done before". Ur issues up there are truthfully trivial, more important issues will definately crop up as a result of this re-arrangement.

According to the report, the already admitted students will be allowed to complete their programme and would be issued Bachelor's degree of Olabisi Onabanjo University on graduation. As for the old students, their certificates will remain valid. Kano college of Technology was transfered to Bida Niger state and converted to Federal polytechnic Bida in 1977. The certificates of the defunct college remains valid. IJMB was replaced with JAMB but you can still gain admission with IJMB result. Like I said earlier, emphasis should not be placed on certificates but competence.
