Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola will on February 16 perform the turning of the sod ceremony to flag-off the construction of a multi-million naira world class, purpose-built, fully functional and well-equipped fire station in the heart of Lagos Island.

The project is sponored by the not-for-profit advocacy and pressure group, Lagos Island Millennium Group on the Environment (LIMGE), and is a key component of the group’s ongoing rebirth agenda for Lagos Island with the aim of turning it into the Venice of Africa. LIMGE which was established in 1999, has notched up impressive results in the work it has done with the state government through the Central Business District authority.

The advocacy and pressure group was instrumental in the eradication of area boys and reclamation of the Lagos Island Central Business District, which had fallen into disrepair and come under the control of area boys, clearing of street traders, decongestion of the streets, and ensuring that street names and traffic lights are in place.
LIMGE’s new target, according to its president, Chief (Mrs.) Taiwo Taiwo, is to make sure “that no building on Lagos Island is ever gutted by fire again. This was one of our clear mandates from inception, because we are aware of the fact that the Lagos Island area is densely populated with close clusters and has always been prone to fire incidents even from colonial times.”

Continuing, she noted that “what LIMGE is doing is showing an example of Private-Public Partnership for others to see and get involved in their communities so we can build a better Lagos and Nigeria.”
LIMGE is supported on this project by Shell Nigeria Exploration Company (SNEPCO) to refurbish, extend, equip and retrain 100 firemen at the Ajele Fire station. When completed, the fire station will become the best in Nigeria with the ability to combat fire in any part of Lagos Island
