It was Ozil experience at RM that changed JM, and he seems to have lost his tactical ethos since then. The fact teams sat back for fear of Ronaldo allowing Real midfield to come closer to each other in the attack is not proof that he can make the 4-2-3-1 work efficiently.

The quality of that Madrid team was high enough to cover up for some inadequacies of some players. Alonso+Diara work rate was enough to cover the 'nyash' of Ozil. Let’s not forget the quality of Marcelo who helps to carry the ball from midfield to final third.
