Personally I wish we could decouple the FIFA WPOTY, Ballon D'or and maybe also have a separate European player of the year award (different from UEFA award which is mostly UCL based). This present setup when all the awards are congested into one, is a real disservice. Can any one really say Messi is the only player deserving of recognition as player of the year for the last 4 year running and could still win it again this year? So apparently since 2009 only Messi has had a year worthy of recognition as player of the year? With it all due respect it is a complete and utter joke.

Its turned in to too much of politics, bias, changing criteria, sentiment, campaigning and even corruption e.t.c. One year you have to win a trophy, other years its not necessary, then you have do well at major tournament, then you don't, then your image matters, then it doesn't. Its turned into a farce. But it can't be helped so lets go back to when we had a number of different awards so it doesn't turn into a meaningless fan dance. e.g In my opinion 4 players were each very deserving of player of the year recognition in 2010. You could make the case for Sneidjer, Xavi, Messi and Forlan in 2010. All had phenomenal years personally and team wise. Imagine if Sneidjer had claimed the FIFA WPOTY, Xavi or Forlan got the Ballon D'or and Messi got the European POTY award. Perfect setup and few could complain as it would be a solid reflection of the year. Then in any year where one player separates himself, he can sweep the field.

Ribery, CR7, Messi, Ibra, I couldn't be bothered who wins this year. WPOTY needs to die and lets get back to the much better previous format. F**k FIFA and their desire to bring more sponsorships and prestige to themselves by having one POTY award.

Platini clearly support Ribery because he is French, If a Juventus player was in the running Platini would have supported him

Zidane supports Ribery despite being on the Madrid board, So hows that different from what casillas did?

You mean Platini supports Ribery? I always knew there was something behind this Ribery winning the European best and his unexpected listing among the best three. He is not even my best in Bayern.

Now we know how FIFA and EUFA influence people's thinking.

If it was by trophies, the year Ronaldo won a better trophy than Messi, he still lost.

The yr Messi was CL highest goal scorer, La Liga highest goal scorer and won a title. Now what did Ronaldo achieve in 2012 to deserve it ahead of Messi i 2012

In 2013

Messi CL highest goal scorer, La Liga Highest goal scorer La Liga tittle broke Gerd Mullers record

Ronaldo Hat trick against Sweden in a playoff. Shikena Are you serious?

I don't think I need to argue again after learning that Platini supports Ribery.

Who your best is in Bayern makes no difference. You can even say Van Buyten was your personal best

But everyone who could see would know Ribery was Bayerns best player over the whole season with Lahm and Muller with a 2nd and 3rd

At the end of the day, there is no ojoro there... all the skippers and coaches will cast their votes; and whether you like it or not they will each cast for who they individually LIKE. We can only take some little consolation from the knowledge that whoever gets on the final short-list, gets there on merit and that is recognition enough in my opinion!

A Rooney Own Goal will do me just fine.

Then afterwards, I can sit back, relax, and watch Coogar proceed to rip out Elampiro's left arm and batter him to death with it, before dying himself of a Rooney-induced epileptic seizure.... grin grin

You mean Clement?

He might be breeding a special 4-eyed, 8-legged rodent, possessing multiple jaws and teeth in its anus to completely dismember Tapsy and Elamps at their next encounter. grin

Or he might just be making a cup of tea while waiting for X-factor to come on. It is Saturday night after all. embarassed

Does Madrid need votes to win trophies. Being a fan of Madrid or Cameroun or England or Germany doesn make any difference, but being a fan of one of the two players who are vying for the world best and making it open has so much influence on the voters from the FIFA boss. He has already given the direction the votes should go.

The fact that he is a honorary memmber would mean he is also biased towards Madrid and madrid players going by your logic. So why would he be able to accept such membership openly but not speak in favour of certain players openly, when in your own opinion he is supposed to be neutral

You still have refused to see the huge difference between supporting a team and making a categorical statement in favour of one of the two players contesting for world best. A team does not need opinion or votes to win trophies. They need goals and wins. In the world best player, votes are needed. The voters need to vote from formed opinion over time. In reaching an opinion, the statement of the FIFA boss is very weighty.

Do you know what it means to poison people's minds against someone? That was the intention of the boss when he implied one was less a football and more a celeb given the time he spents at the solon.

Since when did the personal preference of the FIFA president become law - is he Idi Amin?

Blatter is 'allowed' to have a favorite and even publicly declare it... it is a right that even being FIFA Supremo doesn't take away from him and it in no way sways what the individual National team Skippers and Managers will do with their votes!

If it was not so unethical as you guys make it sound, why did he apolgise? Although he had already done the damage.

He only apologized for the statement directed to Ronaldo, saying he spends lots of time in the salon... He never apologized for making public his favorite player

Simple... because Ronaldo and (or) his PR people took offence. If they had laughed it off, do you think there would have been any apology!!?

They might not need votes to win trophies, but it can always be argued that the affiliations of football's top-dogs can influence outcomes of games and eventual success of the team in question (going by your logic). Not long ago (and even till date), people were accusing Platini (and/or UEFA) of favouring Barcelona due to their ridiculous dominance. Imagine if Blatter were to be a self-professed Barca fan and even a honorary member of the club, the footballing world would have gone berserk with all manner of conspiracy theories, especially given how Barca have been so successful in the last 5 years.

Ribery has no business winning the world footballer of the year award. This is an individual award, and as an individual he is no where near Ronaldo and Messi in this calendar year. Yes he was part of a great and well organised team that won everything, but that's it. In my opinion he wasn't even the best Bayern player. Admittedly I haven't watched lots of Bayern 's game outside Champions league, their top domestic fixtures, and some other games here and there. But each occasion Robben always seem the better player . Both games against Barcelona and the final against DVB is a clear example.

You see, that was the idea, to bring Ronaldo down. After the damaged had been done, he was making ridiculous apologies. Why did he not say simply that he prefers Messi's game. But he went to say things to make Ronaldo appear as an unserious sportsman. Who will vote again for a man who cares too much about making up than training hard to beat his rival to world best?

Na brain washing. Old man sense.
