President Goodluck Jonathan is frantically searching for a new chief of army staff as a replacement for incumbent Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika who would soon be promoted to a four-star general and elevated to the position of chief of defence staff (CDS).

The current CDS, Air Marshal Petinrin, LEADERSHIP gathered, would be proceeding on retirement next month.

Some names are already being brandished at the highest level. Top on the list is Maj.-Gen. Joseph Shoboiki of Course 21 who was described as a good and experienced officer. He hails from Ogun State.

Also on the list are Maj.-Gen. Sunday Idoko from Benue State, who is currently with the Defence Headquarters. Idoko is of Course 20.
Maj.-Gen. Garba Wahab Ayodele from Kwara State is also being considered, as is Major General MB Ibrahim from Nasarawa State, currently the JTF commander in Plateau State.

Some officers who also made the list but not in the shortlist are Major-General Kenneth Minimah who was described as a very good material for the job and who knows no tribe or creed. Reservations were expressed regarding Maj.-Gen. MD Abubakar and Major-General Adamu Marwa. However, another officer, Maj.-Gen. Buzugbe of Course 25, who was described as a very good and professional soldier was also dropped.
