The Federal Government has said that it will no longer award road
contracts to non-professionals. It said the practice of awarding contracts
to anybody had affected the quality of road construction in the past.

The Minister of Transport, Mrs. Diesani Alison-Madueke, gave the
assurance during the inauguration of the Registered Engineers Disciplinary
Tribunal on Saturday in Abuja.

She was represented by a director in the ministry, Mr. Abass Gumi.

The minister also directed all companies doing business with her
ministry to submit a comprehensive list of engineering personnel in their
employment.

This, she said, was in accordance with the law establishing the Council
for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria.

Alison-Madueke called on the directors in the ministry to comply with
the directive.

She added that the measure would ensure that only qualified and
registered engineers were involved in engineering projects.

She regretted that many of the collapsed buildings and roads were
handled by quacks but the blame always went to engineers.

The minister said, �You will agree with me that any time there is a
failure of an engineering system, be it roads, buildings, etc, the first
person to receive the blame is the engineer.�

Yes, let's pray they keep their words and hope imbeciles like Chris Uba and Ededibu will finally find legitimate jobs/businesses. . . because the carpet is about to be pulled from their feet. This stuff is easier said than done in Nigeria anyway.

I believe doing the right thing in Nigeria is way easier than doing it the wrong way. This road project, All they have to do is check credentials of companies and make sure that they have worked on previous projects that are not only of quality but have remained well maintained. Even if the contract goes to foreign companies, I believe it is worth it and will motivate other companies to do better. =
