You still have to go through Nafdac, Standards Organisation of Nigeria and probably others. If u don't play ball they can frustrate your efforts. Of course you could take your patent outside the country but that defeats the essence of this argument. Right?

makes sense. God help us smiley

@Cotton,
On a second thought, what if you decide to play "international politics" with it to get it patented in Nigeria without "settlement"? Get the world to know about it, the international community will sure send teams of reseachers to confirm your claim, insist you want to patent it in Nigeria,  with the world keenly watching, our agencies will be too embarrased to ask for settlement.
what u think?
Re: Can A Nigerian Become A Billionaire Without Patronizing Corruption Or Politics? by jmoore(m): 7:36pm On Feb 23, 2012
It is possible. Only folks with corrupt minds and mediocres will say it is impossible.
Re: Can A Nigerian Become A Billionaire Without Patronizing Corruption Or Politics? by Cotton(m): 7:55pm On Feb 23, 2012
SNCOQ3 It is a thought but consider this: If an international pharmaceutical company was interested, they'd have to protect their interest. Now let us assume they do send people here, they can't confirm its authenticity until a few years of testing etc under their own stringent conditions. For them to do that they must have some measure of control so they agree to set up shop in Nigeria. Now most likely you'll have to form a company with them or at the very least have some sort of contract. I can assure you that for such a discovery, they wouldn't stop at anything to ensure that it gets patented. If they have to settle then so be it. They don't do these things directly-that's what lawyers are for. They hide such payments in legal fees, and remember lawyer/client relationships are privileged so nobody really knows what's discussed.

Jmoore, please try to be a bit more constructive. It is not enough to say "it is possible" without offering solutions. Maybe it is and I just can't see it but it would help me and others on this thread if you could enlighten us. If we had had this argument 30 years ago, maybe I would agree with you but in today's Nigeria, I just can't see it.

No you dont have to go into politics. Its just a good idea to do so when you've made your money. To make sure the government continues to protect your interest.
Opening one or two stores can easily make you a billionaire in Nigeria. Theres soo much opportunity down there.

Yeah, i think you're being realistic here. If i understand you: its possible to keep a clean hand on a personal level, the chance may be extremely narrow though.

i think this is a useless question, there is no success without a cheat. and also note that every Nigerian is corrupt including me. if yu are ur own boss and you go to china and bring low quality goods and sell it more than 200 percent gain, is that not cheat? and you will be a billionaire in less day.

Nigeria no doubt is a place of great opportunities even though all is not free and fair. However anything is possible for those who persevere and have belief in themselves and faith in God.

So why do you want to become a billionaire?
So you can think you have "game" now?  grin Or so you can sing "yahoozie"  cheesy cheesy

Why don't you focus on finding your passion and walking in it.
You will be blessed wherever you are if you find and do what it is you were sent to this world to do.

The question get as e be because if anyone could give you the answer here, they themselves will be billionaires.
Can someone living in a shack in the outskirts of Ajegunle advise you on an honorable way to become a billionaire?  grin

Cotton:

The naivety of some of the posters here amazes me. Hard work is good but in this our country you cannot get that kind of money without touching corruption in some way, no matter how small, such, unfortunately is the way our society has evolved. Remember corruption takes different forms, settling the tax man is a form of corruption, so is settling lastma on ur way to a business deal, settling the police for whatever, the list goes on and on. For those of you who seem to think that it is possible, please tell me who you know that has done it, our megamillionaire pastors? lol!

The hardest working rich men are probably the igbo traders yet they understand that settlement is a way to get things done, either at the port, airport or even in the market itself,

Even the white collar self employed, how many declare their real income? Higher rate tax is over 40%, would you give 40% of your earnings to this government??

Well as this thread progresses let us see who can fit the bill, of not having touched corruption in some form with that kind of wealth. Remember we are talking billionaire and not merely your 150m guy who can travel first class. We are talking liquidity!!!

@ the Bolded. That's what makes Nairaland tick. Used to disgust me at first, but now it provides comic relief for me. Seems many people here are couch potatoes in real life who have no real-world experience of how things work.

The way things are structured in this country makes it impossible to become very wealthy without some form of corrupt, unethical, unholy, or unwholesome practice. This would be the case whether you're a businessman, lawyer, accountant, banker, pastor or whatever There is almost no exception - insofar as your fortune is made and/or maintained here in Nigeria. It's even probably the same worldwide, but perhaps there are more exceptions in civilized societies.

Money is the major reason why there is so much crime and evil in the world. Money is the only reason why there are class divisions in the world. The only reason why we all go to school and work our butts off daily is to make money (whether we admit it or not). As such, it has to take a lot of shyte for one person to accumulate what would be enough to make thousands of people comfortable for a lifetime. Jesus wasn't joking when he said a camel would find it easier to go through the eye of a needle (impossibility) than for a wealthy man to go to heaven. Lets not kid ourselves.

Having said that, I'd rather be wealthy, regardless.

A lot of these big traders are billionaires. Like those onitsha traders (spare parts/electronics/building material dealers). They just don't measure their worth, but many of them are billionaires. They own many shops that make a lot of money daily. They didn't need govt or any corruption to become successful. So i feel to be a billionaire in naija, you either have to be in politics or be a successful trader. I still agree with the poster though, its becoming more and more difficult to become successful in Nigeria. Education is usually not enough

I don't think it is possible because Nigeria is rotten to the bone with corruption. I am not being a pessimist but rather a realist.

a Trader wants to make profit for that reason one from Nigeria will not bling to sale a substandard or unwholesome goog which is corrupt. Hmm, most people think big osha traders are into beku beku and mukendes that is also corruption. What about bribe and tax stuff.
@poster not only in nigeria all over the world no one escapes corruption or POLITICS more especially on his way to billions.

Poster you should have tell us what which currency you mean. As you know someone might be a billionaire in Zimbabwe or Indonesia but not a billionaira in naira. Likewise if you have 1billion naira, when you convert that amount to pounds, euro, dollar, peso, yuan, yen, franc, etc, you are not a billionaire agaion.

One of the main field that is likely to make a Nigeria a billionaire in the near future is IT, or Entertainment. I still believe that someone can still be a billionaire.

It is well with him to him that believe.

To become a millionaire in 9ja without being corrupt or getting into politics is possible only if your parents and then you are extremely determined.
To become a billionaire in 9ja without being corrupt or getting into politics is IMPOSSIBLE.

If you say it is possible, then you probably do not count the little corrupt practices all over the place corruption.
