Just to ensure I am on same page with you. I am a strong advocate of produce in Nigeria, but the fact remains, Nigerians will rather adjust and go for imported products. You asked if rice was 30k and local rice was 16k, I tell you that many people to claim high social class will go for the foreign rice as long as it is available. That will mean importers will bring and adjust their price to the new rate.
Just like the phone seller just said, people will grumble but they will still buy it. Ever wondered why products produced in Aba have to carry international labels just to be able to sell them?

Theconglomerate:
Exactly.
You are right.
But then, phone importation isn't Nigeria's problem but importing things that we can produce.
This way,Nigeria importation will be limited to things we can't do without like phone, medicine and very strategic things.
This is what Emefiele meant by "strategic import". cool

If was just a figure of speech to make the whole discussion humourous.
I'm sorry if anyone took offense, besides I wasn't referring to him but the importer that does that import at that time.

If you put rice at 100k today, some people will still buy.
The question is how many?
The masses which make the bulk will have no choice but buy the cheaper one irrespective of quality.
Aba doesn't sell that much because people can still afford import with perceived higher quality.
I am talking about creating an avenue where people(masses) can't even afford import I the first place.
There is no way someone earning 30k a month will buy rice at 33k when he knows he can buy local for 16k.
Quality is an illusion to the masses but real and a factor to the rich.
You can't be talking quality with 5k last card for account.
Impossible.

This thing you are trying to achieve can be achieved by increased in tarrif also even though I know that in Nigeria, bans are more effective. Smuggling will increase but so will the price which you say an increase in dollar will achieve.
You have to see what worked for rice was the ban and improved with border closure.

Seconded jare. Thanks. Some tenants are not smiling. So this is welcome. An eye for an eye.
I don learn I swear grin grin grin

Barrytone:
I grew up in the streets but I don't encourage this any longer but its inevitable where a tenant things you must suffer after the initial suffer to build a house. Go to court, pay the clerk and officials and get a notice, paste on his door in his absent and snap then take notice off. Make some other person appear in court in his stead as a proxy tenant he transferred tenantship to without your consent and get a verdict and evict him immediately as the unpreparedness will rock his life for ever. He can continue the fight from outside your house. The person that appeared is the person you have been seeing around the house and you don't know him. Simply put, he alone can provide that person.

Increase in tariff can never have the same effect as increase in forex.
Forex increase shoots up pricing way more than anything else.
You can't compare inflation caused by MPR rate cuts, excess liquidity, increased tariff, lending rate cuts to that caused by fx increase in an import dependent nation na,can you?
Now is closing borders that helps export your goods to neighbouring countries just to stop smuggling of rice into the country a good thing?
Why close your borders when you can just devalue your currency, make that product so expensive for your people to be able to afford in the first place thereby killing its demand and still have your borders open for business? cool
Besides, who told you rice smuggling has stopped?
You must be joking.
At this rate,Nigeria produced rice will never go nowhere because local and foreign are same price right now.
Bans are ineffective in corrupt nations caused by generational poverty.
Bans don't work here.

One reason increase in tariff or ban of a specific product in my opinion is more effective is because, a dollar of 1000 will affect everything including essential products like drugs, books, electronics and even services.

However, when you target a specific product in isolation, you can manipulate different parameters for that product in order to optimize your desired result.

Oga we no need loan of five billion naira from bank to manufacture, that is what I am saying.
Right now it's only daredevils that are manufacturing.
Others want to and have the money for it but they are afraid because imports is taking a huge chunk of the market.
Eliminate import and you will know that there are a lot of people that have 5bn naira.
I am not guessing but giving you facts.

I actually agree with him here. Take for example Big Cola. Personally I don't like it, but consumers prefer it because it's very competitive from a pricing perspective. Coca Cola is even only able to compete because they have somewhat localized. If Coke was 100% imports, no be wetin we for they talk be this.

Replicate Big Cola case study for fashion, electronics, food, and Nigeria will certainly consume local to our favour.

There's is something in trade called retaliation. If we increase tariffs for selected imported products e.g rice that comes from Thailand.

Thailand may not have the capacity to produce yams. And let's say Nigeria exports yams to Thailand, their government will also increase tariffs for our yams.

So tariffs and bans are not scalable, especially when your country is just starting out. Remember that Nigeria increased the cost of visa for U.S citizens and Trump retaliated with even higher costs. Now that FG tried to even revert the increase, Trump no gree go back.

Also take a look at what Trump is trying to do with Huawei by creating some form of export ban on semiconductors created in the U.S.

China still lags behind in semiconductors production, they rely heavily on U.S. With this ban, they are forced to do 2 things:

1. Retaliate by looking for something that U.S also depends on them for and ban it's export. (Fast)
2. Start developing their own semiconductor industry (will take some time).

your first option would have been a good one for them but truth is, its US that tried on them for cheap labour/production cost which is about to change soon as businesses may move back their productions to North America

5-10years ago...I doubt if anyone saw this coming, hence the reason I think China did not plan for this..plus technology has evolved rapidly and most of the patents in tech are from/in US...now with the somewhat ban of foreign students from China and other china controlled territories, the worst is yet to come

MrMcJay:

Agric C of Os are also very much genuine, it's just that the purposes differ from that of Residential or Commercial C of Os. Once they tell a any property is covered by a CofO, try to check 4 things.

1. The propose of the CofO. It is usually written on the front page. Residential, Agricultural, Industrial, Mixed-use, Commercial or Utility.

2. The time span of the CofO. This is written inside the C of O, page 2 or 3. No CofO is issued for infinity and the longest time span is usually 99 years for Residential CofOs. While Agric C of Os have a short lifespan of about 15 to 25 years, others are for much longer.

3. Commencement. The time the CofO commences is very important. It is written on the front page of the C of O and determines when it starts and the remaining lease left on the land. If you get a C of O commencing from 1991 and to last for 99 years, it means it is to expire in 2090 and you have 70 years left on the lease.

4. Covenants. This is very important because these are the hidden clauses where the main terms of the grant are hidden. The conditions upon which the CofO are granted are written here and it is advised that you read them properly.

*Unregistered Investors For E-Dividend Payment*

Unclaimed dividends increased from N109.1 billion in Devember 2016 to N130 billion in December 219 (SEC, 2020)

You can however search if you or your loved ones have unclaimed dividends using Security and Exchange Commission Portal and
claim your dividends with these steps.

Step 1: Input your first name and last name into this link https:///exQBBrd to get a list of your shares from SEC.
This will give you a screenshot of all the companies you have shares in, and the registrars in charge.

*Note:* if you have changed your name due to marriage or other reasons, search with your previous name and also try different format of name e.g those with prefixes e.g 'Olu', 'Oluwa' etc

Step 2: Take note of your registrar’s name.
A registrar, is the company that keeps the shareholder’s details for other companies. So, your shares could have data with different registrars.

Step 3: Download and fill your registrar’s form which is beside the company's name on the website.

Step 4: Submit your form.
Some companies require you to go to your bank and get a bankers confirmation, so they can initiate the e-dividend form for you.

Once this is done, your account will be credited automatically with the e-dividend going forward.

Hello,

Just checking if had a closure on this issue.

Also, I'd like to know (from you or anyone else with experience) if Eurobond payout are made in Dollar or Naira.

Thanks.

IamR:

I got my statement almost 6 months of venturing into Eurobond and I saw that my capital was less of over 1k$ as at that time. I have applied for liquidation. I will write about it when I get it within one month as stated in their letter to me instead of 72hrs. Leaving the money with them will incur more losses. I have consulted one or two Gurus outside Nairaland and I think the best thing is to liquidate the investment.

Would I get it within one month? I am not 100% sure. My lawyer is on standby though.

Call a spade, a spade.

He was outrightly wrong with his perspective on residential and commercial property.

Your explanation falls inline with his thought, which he felt should be understandable to all, but that was not so because enlightened minds know that renting out a residential property doesn't convert it to a commercial property in the context of government classification.

He is a troll with myopic, anti-social, demeaning act of outrunning himself on issues he's ungrounded in, and would attempt to cyberbully folks at the slightest point of dissonance with his perspectives...What a man!

All una sef get time to dey follow such a man trade words!

Let me try to breakdown what you are saying, person fit build a duplex and rent am out in a residential area, to the landlord it is now a commercial building but to the government na still private building because na duplex e be and na person dey live there no be some supermarket or eatery.
