Hope he is selling approved standard drugs in that village and doesn't involve in unethical medical practices? Just checking. [q1uote author=arduino post=91567310]
One of my parents tenants from Ebony state hit a goldmine selling simple pharmaceutical drugs in my very remote village which is about 65km from Ekwulobia. The guy drives high end vehicles and has bought and is still buying lands and properties from families willing to sell to him.
His annual rent is just N50,000 for modern standard 3-Bedroom apartment.
NB: He came to my village just two years ago and started a small chemist shop.

You know,I was worried about this. I hope he has scruples and not harming the people in anyway. It's terrible what people can do for money

Most times, what Nigerians call "Connection" is what is known as "Networking" in the employment sphere. Globally, it is still the number one way people get hired in most industries and is generally preferred by HR professionals. Getting a qualified candidate for a job is not as easy as it seems hence the reliance on recommendations from already trustworthy individuals.
Networking isn't a bad thing as long as one is qualified for the job, it is nepotism and cronyism that should be frowned upon.

Networking, like any other skill, can be learned. Although, most times it is about being in the right place at the right time. Young graduates should strive to improve their networks.

Gbam. There are times we recruit in my office without advertising. We just pass the information to the staff that if they have friends looking for work, they should get their CVs and send. Sometimes i contact ex-colleagues if we need staff and ex-colleagues also contact me if they need staff.

What you described is networking which is normal.

But don't confuse it with "connection."

Connection is when a senator has been given 12 slots for NNPC recruitment and he just goes to his village to pack his family members to send to NNPC whether they are qualified or not.

With networking, you are recommending people that are really qualified for the job. I can't say the same for connection.

Too early to start all this, I guess you don't understand what he was trying to say.

What works for you might not work for another person and what works for him might not work for you.

We need to operate from the points of our comparative advantages and absolute advantages. You can derive these advantages based on your family, education, capital, exposure, experience, network, values, skills, location etc.

We all need to look inwards..

I asked a guy working in the airline sector, how he has been surviving since he stopped receiving salaries in March.

He said his folks ie brothers in the village send bags of garri, kegs of palm oil, tubers of yam, money etc to him. He gave interest free loans to them when they started their agribusiness about 10 years ago He regretted not diversifying and investing part of the salaries he earned in the last 15 years in agriculture

I don't know how I will calculate or explain it to you but then let me start this way. For the bond fund I started it as monthly contribution of 90k from end of January 2020 (1st week of February to be precise.) I just paid the 6th one for June last week. What is extra after the sum of my 6 months contribution of 90k is N13,000.

For the Dollar Fund, it is a meager amount of $3,000 that I put there since 1st week of March 2020. The extra on it right now is $69.

Above is why I can't expressly tell you which one has accrued more. My aim was to build that Dollar Fund gradually too but I can't afford at the rate it is being sold now.

Wanted to even ask, what mutual fund is this?

Bro which of the Banks own the dollar fund that earned you this interest. What is the current rate for the dollar fund, it seems someone can invest in it with less than $10k.

Is there any capital risk with the dollar fund?
Thanks

Yes you can invest in it below N10$k, I have forgotten their minimum but it should be around $2500.

Networking isn't easy o. People won't help especially when they know you are very qualified and the job can change your financial life. They rather recommend their family relations.

But if it's one sme-sme job like that, they will be quick to call you.

Nevertheless, networking is good, I have gotten two jobs in time past from just recommendation.

Except you're working for the government, most private organizations would require you to have the requisite skill.

Are you saying a job like software development can be gotten via "man know man"? If you're simply not initially capable, even if your brother owns the company, you won't be employed if you don't have the skills.

This village and city talk has got me thinking since.

My organization has allowed us work remotely since March this year and I was asking myself "do I actually need to renew my rent?"

Why should I spend a lot renewing my rent in Lagos when I could go to Ibadan and pay way less for a bigger space. If I've been able to discipline myself to save 60% of my income in Lagos, I'm sure I can do 80% in Ibadan, so why am I still here ??

Don't mind people like alphascorpio abeg. When OPay started, they poached staffs from Gokada.
When Konga started, they poached staffs from Jumia.

Poaching staffs mean you have to offer them better remuneration. Please why are they doing that when they could employ all their family members. Forget all those "man know man" type of jobs, they are usually low paying government jobs. No real job would be offered solely on the basis of connection.

Now I put it to you alphascorpio, I have a slot for you as a surgeon in NNPC, the pay is very high, please will you take it?

The pandemic will end up creating a new sets of normal.

I learnt 60% to 70% of workers on Victoria Island are still working from home. 3 of my Stockbrokers have not opened their physical offices but they have done and still doing transactions running to billions of Naira between April and now.

This may affect cost of real estate on the Island. Businesses may just need small offices where workers can come once or twice in a month

Wel, well, well

The current discussion is very very interesting

There are opportunities in the west

There are opportunities in Lagos

And there are opportunities in some rural areas.

Most black folks who did not succeed in the west wont have succeeded in Nigeria either

Success is more of function of the person

There are a good number of millionaire nigerians in the diaspora (USD)
Tho they are in the minority

It tells that you can succeed out there too with the right mindset

Here in Nigeria as well

The millionaires are also in the minority

If that weren't the case
Nigeria wont be the headquarters of extreme poverty

I personally am putting plans in place to relocate permanently, as I have had enough of this madness in the country.
No more back and forth

Permanent move.

And I know just as I have achieved some level of success here
I will do same abroad too.

But that's just me

Everyone should know what is best for him or her
And go with it

But the idea that a black man cannot make it in the west is pure bunkum
