Are Ibos Republicans? by quest55(m): 12:53pm On Feb 25, 2012 |
I Have some questions regarding stereotypes and ageold ideas. 1. Why do some IBOS refer to themselves as republicans? 2. Are Ibos as a tribe more arrogant than the other tribes in Nigeria? 3. Are IBOS generaly wealthier? |

Original igbo states and villages organized themselves as democratic republics. Leaders were elected to represent the specific demands of the electorate in representitve counsels. Also womens groups and yourth groups had representation. 1 Like |

The republican nature of Igbos haas been inimical to their political progress in Nigeria. i guess that's why people say Igbos are not united. |

Apart from the Nri theocracy and a couple of other monarchies in places like Onitsha and Arochukwu, the rest Igbos are rightly republican in nature. |

It is "Igbos," not "Ibos." Spell the name right if you want any answers to your questions. |

Ikengawo: {About all the above ethno comments:-You can't divorce heavy ethnic comments from any thread of nairaland.com. We are all guilty, pls ignore} Back to the topic: So they are republican because of their representative type of goverment. Not necessarily due to an independent or non-socialist outlook. Is this correct? |
Re: Are Ibos Republicans? by Abagworo(m): 10:37am On Feb 26, 2012 |
quest55: 1. Everything depends on their definition of "republicans". Igbos are rather democratic or maybe a mixture of the two but leaning more on the democratic side. The fact is that Igbos traditionally do not condole dictatorship. Even where Eze's existed, they were not dictators. 2. Igbos are traditionally a shy and humble people when you get to the parts where the culture is a bit preserved like the Ebonyi/ Enugu axis but the embrace of Western culture and mass migration has distorted our traditional values. For example an Igbo that grew up in his village believes every black is same but once he steps out to other parts of Nigeria and experiences hostility, his psyche changes. The Igbos living in Lagos for example tend not to agree with Yorubas while those in the East are indifferent. It is therefore possible they might have acquired arrogance as a result of hostility. 3. Igbos are not wealthier than other Nigerians as the free oil money shared by the owners of Nigeria has been specifically done in such a manner as to exclude anything Igbo. But this turned out a blessing as Igbos have evolved to a situation where majority are middle class earners while very few can be regarded as wealthy. Wealth is more evenly distributed among Igbos than any other part of Nigeria. Akwa-Ibom, Delta and Edo States do have high middle class but mostly belong to minority ethnic groups. |

1) The Igbo chieftaincy, leadership and political institution has been democratic since the dawn of time. You would never find an absolute Igbo king. Any King in Igboland could be removed at anytime if he is deemed incompetent and his cause highly detrimental to that of his people. Some villages would rather go without a king instead employing council of elders, if it is perceived that a supposed king would become too powerful. 2) Igbos are rarely arrogant but rather feel very comfortable in their own skin. The average Igbos in the east rarely obsess themselves with other Nigerians or Nigerian politics but are often more focused on their own personal achievement and advancement. 3) Whether Igbos are wealthier than other Nigerians, is up for a debate but certain things are sure. The igbos have a much higher number of middle class than any other tribe. Given a level playing field, the Igboman is more likely to expand his endeavours faster than any other person, so long no external help is given to any one of the competitors. An Igbo is less likely to stay dormant and they are very adventurous, experimental and create a business out of the most mundane things out there. |
