I'll be graduating from medical school in june, i plan to come back to Nigeria,but i need advice; especially from doctors,,,is coming back home a good move?, how much are doctors paid? in which places can i work apart from hospitals?, (e.g. navy,army,oil sector,sports)
And as a woman,,how can i combine my career with family/marriage?
i really need all the help i can get. Looking forward to helpful replies.Thanx!

However, if big money is your reason for coming back home, then you may be disappointed. My Nigerian doctor friend tells me he is planning on running to the US to practice. He says that is where the money is, especially after the USMLE.

If your goal is to come and help patients back home, and in the process get paid normally, then you are most welcome. Otherwise, I strongly urge that you look elsewhere. An average doctor, with less than two years experience, does not earn more than 300k per month in Nigeria. Meanwhile, I am being generous with figures. Depending sha, you may land a job with one of these oyel companies' hospitals.

Meanwhile, are you married? Is it your marriage, husband as well as child that is forcing you to relocate to Naija?

Coming back to Nigeria with just your basic medical qualification is not an extremely good idea. . .

Irrespective of where you got your MBBS/MD, you will still need to do the Exam for foriegn trained medical graduates before you can be allowed to do your housemanship and so on in Nigeria. 

If you have the resources - and that's if you haven't yet caught the bug to leave clinical practice - finishing some sort of residency programme before you come back would be advised. The truth is that without a postgraduate medical qualification, you will just have to join the ever lengthening queue of struggling junior doctors, walking about with a dark cloud of frustration . . . and regret . . . hanging over their heads . . . wondering what on earth their lives have turned into!

With regards to the issue of combining career and family - a lot of women have done it and continue to do it. You will have to find your own balance.

I will let others who are better informed respond to the issues of where you can work in Nigeria and how much you can earn.

I will be relocating home (Nigeria) in two months time and cant wait. Enough of the rubbish one get out here.

Sorry to say this, "you're talking plenty about this patriotism stuff" i'm one advocate of great change for Nigeria. Those that kept saying they are returning how many visible change(if not changes) have we seen. I'll advice you get to the zenith of your career before returning. This country is a mess, also dead. I wonder how we all are surviving. God's grace. I'm still totally optimistic. No place like home esp Nigeria. All the best

But on the first, I'd say, why not try to get some good experience, specialization, or whatever it is doctors get, before coming back home?
It's good to come back home, but it would probably be a better idea to do your residency and possibly some other specializations you want to do before coming back home. Those would be better achieved in the developed world, as opposed to Nigeria.

It's good to come back home, but right now, Nigeria needs people to give more than take. If you come back, you should be looking at contributing your own quota to its development. There are lots of opportunities for development in healthcare, but i think we need more experienced people that can bring skills, ideas, contacts, etc, to the table. Get some good experience out there. It will benefit you, and Nigeria as well, in the long term.

I am sorry I gotta say, do not come back to this country as a fresh medical school grad. I recently finished college(got 15mths work exp) and returned home. It is one of d biggest mistakes of my life, and I am planning to return to d US when I can. For someone who has been away for atleast 7years (since u said med school), I am not sure u would enjoy workin in d unusually harsh conditions in Nigeria, excpt u get work in some of d nicer hospitals like Reddington. Even if u r not money motivated, d lack of research, inadequate facilities can d frustrating. I think a better way to return and b really useful to society is to garner a lot of work experience especially in whatever specialty u r in...(Naija needs major medicine in all specialities as dere is a serious lack) and den come home to set up ur own clinic/hospital. I know a couple of ppl who did dat and dey r incredibly successful not just financially, but dey r actually making a difference. Dere is a guy with uk experience now in lagos dat does ivf; he saves women d cost of travelling out to do this; he is also a lil cheaper dan many ivf places abroad. He gets atleast 1400patients a year and charges around $10k for d treatment; he is doin so well and so r many of his patients. Same goes for d US-trained paediatrician in my neighbourhood. In general, comin back home to b employed isn't such a great idea; better to return a ceo to really make a difference. Cheers

Where is this money earned? in the Village or major cities like ABUJA, PH OR LAGOS

I'm currently in my final year of university, studying Accounting and finance. I have about four months left to finish my degree. My original plan was that when I finish my degrees I'd relocate to Nigeria, but after much research I'm thinking about doing my Masters in a Russell Group university then NYSC. oh btw I'm based in the uk, I'll like to get a very good job in Nigeria but I just don't know how to go about it, yes I have connections but I do not want to rely on ANYONE. Pls give me your advise. And I can't decide on where to do my nysc either Lagos or Abuja bare in mind I'd like to do my nysc where I can get a good job. Ohh also does anymore know about this careers in Africa.?
