Even if Jesus becomes the Head of the EFCC, John the Baptist becomes the head of ICPC and the Holy Spirit becomes the Attorney General/Public Prosecutor, as long as the Nigerian Courts remain what it is today, NO HALF DECENT CROOK WOULD SPEND A NIGHT IN JAIL. . .

Blame the courts not the EFCC. . .

You hit the nail on the head.We have sufficient crime investigating bodies, what we need are more convictions.I mean stiffer convictions.I wonder what those two judges - Hussein Murhktar (2004) & Marcel Awokulehin (2009) - who gave Thief James Ibori cool clean bills of health would be thinking now. Their cups are running over.

i am only happy that 99% of nigerians are now aware that everything about pdp and efcc are jokes. we have a number 1 citizen whose wife is as good and wonderful as Ibori.
i will not be surprise one day when efcc will brag that they will soon try our first lady over the $13m belonging to bayelsa state.
it is a shame that we are so useless and unreasonable with the ways and manners we believe that animals(rulers) who talk to us as if we are fools.
if this pdp led govt is not a joke, why will they even allow uk to first jail ibori before they jail him since he was also wanted here?
i always feel disappointed for been a citizen of this jungle called nigeria.
i can wait to join any plans or rebel group that will kill all these politicians and their family members.

Jesus the Righteous says, "What shall it profit a man to gain the whole world, but lose his own soul or what shall a man give for his soul?". unquote. Those words are eternal. I'm a bright young man. Very intelligent. When I was in High school, my English teacher advised my dad to sell land to send me to College. Alas, my poor dad doesn't even have a piece of land to sell. Today, I've not been able to go to College cause of lack of funds. This is the plight of many in Nigeria; just because the people in government, people like Ibori decided to amass wealth they would leave behind when they die. Nigerians, wake up!. If you want change, then stand up and demand for your rights. Don't just sit down and complain. Go to your LGA office, constituency office, Government House, whatever and demand accountability and transparency. We must be the change we want. Peace

In all fairness to the EFCC, the major difference between the UK trial and t he Nigerian trial is the incorruptible UK judiciary. The fault is not really the EFCC's. The incessant delays and frivolous injunctions are given by the courts, not by the EFCC. People talk about giving Igbinedion  fine. That is the judiciiary, not EFCC. Sometimes in Nigeria, we always protest about the wrong thing or focus on the wrong people. I have always said and will continue to say loudly that the institutions that really need to change in Nigeria are the Judiciary, the Press and the Legislature. Especially the first 2. Once these 3 change, the whole country,  including the executive, will follow suit.

Imagine reading this morning news and am hearing the NJC is still considering reinstating Salami. Even if Salami is innocent, he would have resigned in any sane society. But he wants to sit tight and chop. So what will you expect from judges like that. It is a real pity.

Despite the crumbling of his money laundering machinery in the UK, Mr. Ibori’s was waxing politically stronger in Nigeria. In one demonstration of his invincibility in Nigeria, he insisted that former President Yar’Adua remove Mr. Ribadu from chairmanship of the EFCC and also dismantle the top leadership of the anti-corruption agency. Subjected to constant humiliation after his removal from the EFCC, Mr. Ribadu was ultimately hounded into exile. With the consent of an ailing President Yar’Adua, Mr. Ibori also installed Farida Waziri as head of the EFCC. He also had the then attorney general of the federal, Michael Aondoakaa, to do his bidding. SaharaReporters exposed the fact that Mr. Aondoakaa wrote several letters to Mr. Ibori’s defense team in London claiming that the Nigerian government had found no evidence of corruption on the part of the former governor. Mr. Aondoakaa also sought to prohibit U.K. prosecutors from using any evidence provided by Mr. Ribadu’s EFCC in the prosecution of Mr. Ibori’s associates undergoing money laundering trials in London.

In another sign of his untouchable status in Nigeria, Mr. Ibori engineered to have his money laundering trial transferred to the Delta State capital of Asaba in a hastily assembled, brand new federal high court. The court sat in a house bought from one of the former governor’s political associates. Mr. Ibori was allowed to choose Justice Marcel Awokulehin, a notoriously corrupt judge, to preside over his charade of a trial. He also chose his prosecutor, a man who in court made a habit of agreeing with any motion that Mr. Ibori’s defense lawyers made. In an outcome that SaharaReporters predicted, the 170 counts of money laundering in Nigeria were made to collapse, with Justice Awokulehin, who received a bribe of $5 million, proclaiming Mr. Ibori’s innocence.

With questions still cast over Mr. Ibori’s trial in Nigeria, his alma mater, the University of Benin, hastily organized a founder’s day lecture to project him as a hero. The former governor also made a round of the Nigeria media to insist on his innocence and to deny that he ever offered Mr. Ribadu a bribe of $15 million in order to stave off prosecution.

As soon as Yar’Adua died in 2010, the political calculation changed. The tide turned against Mr. Ibori as then acting President Goodluck Jonathan ramped up political pressure against Mr. Ibori who, as one of the closest confidants of the late ruler, had often ridiculed Mr. Jonathan and prevented him from becoming acting president even as it was clear that Mr. Yar’Adua was incapacitated in a Saudi hospital.

To thwart a feeble attempt made to re-arrest him, Mr. Ibori fled to Dubai. However, his run was short-lived when an international dragnet by the UK police caught up with him. UK authorities filed an extradition request in Dubai to snag up the fugitive former governor, wanted in the UK to answer to the use of financial institutions in that country to engage in money laundering.

Mr. Ibori’s relentless fight in a Dubai court to return to Nigeria instead failed. He was eventually flown to the UK in 2010 where he remained in custody till today’s guilty plea. From his UK detention, Mr. Ibori had coordinated and launched a deceptive media campaign. Mr. Ibori’s associates funded some Nigerian-owned blogs that alleged, among other things, that UK police investigators had accepted bribes from his associates; that the prosecution’s case against him was weak; and even that the prosecution was on the verge of abandoning their case.

A source close to Mr. Ibori told SaharaReporters that the former governor’s well-funded propaganda collapsed last week when his well-paid attorneys told him he had a bad case. Feeling utterly, Mr. Ibori came to terms with the fact that he could not maneuver his way out of the legal logjam as he was able to do in his fake Nigerian trial.

A UK-based lawyer told SaharaReporters that, in pleading guilty today, Mr. Ibori hoped to avoid receiving the maximum sentence for his crimes. Even so, the source suggested that the former governor should expect a sentence in the range of 10-12 years.

But that could be only the beginning of his troubles as the London Metropolitan police plan to go after his assets all over the world. A source with the Met told SaharaReporters that Mr. Ibori’s recovered loot would be returned to the people of Delta State.

@dmainboss,
permit me to say that you got it all wrong.
all the institutions u mentioned above have one main problem  which happen to be INDEPENCE. none of them including ur efcc is independent of the presidency. if you have been following the activities of efcc from the day one, they only go after the oppositions of the govt while opposition is suppose to part of democracy.
i was reading an article about ghana earlier this month and five serving ministers or so were taking to court for corruption but what do we have here. as long as you are with the president of the day, you are free to do whatever you like.
our minister of information(mako) led a protest against govt in 1986 because of fuel subsidy removal but today, he is in the forefront on the war to remove fuel subsidy. when asked, he said, he was sponsored to protest against the govt. tell me, is such a deceit worthy to be a public servant?
does the efcc have what it takes(independence) to go after our first lady for stealing $13m belonging to bayelsa state while her husband was the gov of that state.
if ibori stole delta ppl money, what about those who stole nigeria money? we all know efcc to be selective in their justice. all the federal govt contracts awarded and paid for under obasanjo were not executed yet no single individual in facing any court case any where in nigeria. it is a big shame.

What do you mean by independence? How are they not independent? Is there any way that the Executive can lord it over the Judiciary or legislature or the press that the constitution empowers? Please educate me here because I cant understand your grammer. Nigeria operates a government with 3 arms, the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary. The last time I checked, that hasnt changed.

The only way the executive can have any influence over the legislature or Judiciary is if they go plate in hand to look for favours. If they operate withing the law and do their jobs, nobody can hold them to ransome. So please dont make excuses for them. They are established by the constitution to put the executive arm on their toes. But they have failed to do their job and provide check and balance. I actually hold them more responsible for the Nigerian situation than the executive.

My broda, I like to engage in discuss based on facts not assumptions and media gossip. Please leave out the gossips and speculations about Dame Patience stealing and lets talks facts.

How can you try him in Nigeria when a Federal High Court cleared him of corrupt charges. A big shame to our legal system and corrupt judges

Foolish EFCC. Ibori was discharged and acquitted in Nigeria becuase the Case could not be substantiated by EFCC. The cas file was practically empty but for things put there by efcc. It still boils down to the fact that the anti curruption body lacks the inteligencce and skill to carry out investigations.
