By Bukola Olatunji, 29 February 2012

About 100 of the 400 almajiri schools, promised by the Federal Government are to be handed over to the 19 Northern states by June, Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike has said.

Wike, who disclosed this, during a courtesy call on the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III, at his Palace yesterday, said this was in fulfilment of President Goodluck Jonathan's campaign promise of ensuring that Almajiri children were educated to contribute their quota to national development.

"The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the federal and state governments are therefore being worked out," he said. The minister was in the state to inspect the on-going construction of the Almajiri schools in Lambar Tureta and Badau communities in the state.

He expressed satisfaction with the level of work, saying the contracts were awarded last December and one of the contractors assured that the project would be handed over next month.

Responding, the Sultan said: "What the ministry is doing is what we have always thought of and what we believe must be done. Education is very important because this Sokoto caliphate was founded on knowledge. Our great grand fathers established this caliphate purely on knowledge. It is now our responsibility to foster this knowledge and clamour for it because without education, you cannot even practice your religion."

According to him, "he Almajiri issues has been a problem to all of us because people hide behind religion in the past. We should handle the Almajiri issue more seriously. We believe we have to educate people that Islam was never in support of Almajiri. Islam was never in support of begging."

Islam is a religion that believes that an individual must get up and work for himself and be a better person and not to depend on anybody. Issues of Almajiri and others must be eradicated and it can only be eradicated through knowledge. We want to commend the Federal Government for the initiative."

The Sultan also drew attention to the reported scrapping of History from primary and secondary schools curricula, saying "Only people without identity will forget their history." He also stressed the need to make Religious Study compulsory in order to tackle corruption.

As usual, people make comments without giving reasons. The policy is bound to fail, based on what and what reasons?

Tell us, rather than a blanket submission when you havent even allowed the thing to take off first.

Almajiri, Is an Arabic name.
I don't know why some particular region in Nigeria will take another country's language and culture as a do or die affair in their own land.

I noticed that The Saudi Arabia is the most peaceful country so far but every country that generates from it or any country that is taking the religion that comes from it is always a war land. They overdue it and most especially Nigerians.

the fg should enforce a separate institution for religion and what not, kids who are not made to go to proper schools in the north should be taken away from their parents and taken down south or to gaurdians who will educate them, we continue like this in Nigeria at all.

I dey laugh oh. Who tell them say almajiri want toembrace western education school. In the north, they used to give them journey money home, feed them, hire southern teachers on contract, but at the end of the day, they abandon school,or they complain; schooling is hard.Any serious learned person from the north is a core fulani man. check it out. Fulani knows the value of education, remember the fulanis conquered the hausas.Funds for this project is already looted. We like to jump steps,we can't provide basic amenities, they are talking of western education, nonsense and sinful to "almajiris.

These children deserve our sympathy because they're victims of bad northern leadership. You and I are just fortunate to grow up in southern part of Nigeria. I've been saying this thing that many of us are not better than Boko Harams because, our minds are equally infected. It is only the way we express our childish and animalistic behaviour that makes the difference. Don't tell me that you're happy with the way things are in Northern part because, southerners are always the victims of their illiteracy. Then, why are we being pessimistic and hostile to this development? After all, ND militants/terrorists are being reformed in the same manner.

I understand what you're saying. But at the end of the day there's a constitution to follow which supports federal character. Their past leaders should be blamed for their woes.

What is the point of this poster?

take a good look at the emphasized part of this write up. GEJ promised almajiri schools during his campaign. let him fulfil the promise. the 19 state governments did not promise almajiri schools. they promised other things according to their needs. let them fulfil their promises. the state governments do not have budgets for this "promised schools". GEJ should not make a promise and impose it on the state governments. will he fund the running of the schools?

This is a scam by GEJ and his cronies.

out of 400 schools promised "one of the contractors assured that the project would be handed over next month" haba GEJ!

what of the airports promised by GEJ in each state of the federation? will he also hand them over to the states?

GEJ wake up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Nigeria: Fg To Hand Over 100 Almajiri Schools By June by mission08: 5:53pm On Mar 01, 2012
I pray it works. Several interventions had been targeted at the northern states especially interventions targeted at the almajiris, it had always failed cos their leaders believe that u are depriving them of their foot soldiers, moreso they see it as a religious obligation so they are ever ready to frustrate your efforts. They are really living in the dark. They have higher prevalence rates in maternal and infant deaths, child marriage, poverty, illiteracy, too many and poorly spaced children, you name it. With education, a whole lot of problems will drastically reduce.

After creating 10 million almajiri's, those states should be extremely grateful for the free schools they are getting. They had better start learning to take care of their own shiit, next thing we will hear that kids didn't go to school because they didn't 13% derivation awuf.

The building of schools is a good idea but it will not solve the problem. Even the Sultan knows that. The problem is mainly the radical islamic indoctrination and poverty.
