UNIPORT: No Life Was Lost During Students’ Protest – Police / Student Eggplant Goes Missing In Uniport(photo) / UNIPORT 2014 Official Thread (2) (3) (4)

Mafious: Big lie. A first class degree from a Nigerian University will take you places. Yes, you have to garnish it with an MS or PhD, but you need that strong first class showing to get into top schools too. So, don't give me the story that many of them are unsuccessful. I know a ton and they are extremely successful in the US. Bottomline: you don't need a first class to be successful in life (although it could give some competitive advantage). However, I can understand OP's frustration if indeed he deserved a first. Means the entire educational system needs complete overhauling. But who would you blame? Parents are not 'helping' their kids cheat in SSCE and JAMB. So, the system in itself, is patently flawed. 1 Like |

Info Tech? Uniport? First class?. . . Fortran? Brother please. Shay MI said it, computer science students graduating without seeing a computer. How could you possibly put a value on your uniport computer science (IT) degree? Uniport students you have a right to be silent, I have seen your dirty codes. |

Hard work alone is not enough to get first class honors or the equivalent anywhere. You also have to be much smarter than your peers. |

Op might be right. most lecturers, maotly in the SE/SS region detest student's success. my department , from inception, have no 1st class graduate. initially, i thought the students were lazy but i now know. well, i thank Jah it doesnt put food on the table |

As for the OP what is uniben preparation eh? You started failing from day one. In uniport go back and look at your syllabus you have the highest number of 3 credit courses mostly in your first semester of 100 level. If you did not make a 4.o at the very least then kindly forget your first class. I dunno if it has changed but 400 and 500 level in Uniben makes up almost say 70 or so percent of your GPA ( at least na so e be when I been dey school) in uniport its 25%(or 20% in engineering) for the duration of your school, you miss two years in a row and thats almost enough to say bye bye to a 2:1. By miss I mean a GPA below 3.5. |

in my final year i got a C in Cplus plus! I was stunned at that! My c plus plus lecturer cannot on a computer! So probably copied the answer and marked my code according to his own copy! 'no body has ever got an A in my course since 1992, A is for me, AB is for my wife' my english lecturer once said in my yr one. 'i dont give people A ' - one of my course lecturers. I got a D in that course. (Engineering Safety) if i give u d course content, you'll get an A the following day! Another way to get an A is to pay the lecture N3000 after the exams! School was war. |

@OP First Class is not beans oooo. I ended my secondary education in 2003. Struggled to gather a complete O'levels from 2 sitting. Read hard for JAMB scored 271 in 2006. Sat the Unilag post-ume and scored 62, got denied based on my 2 sittings. Got to UNAD (Ekiti State) 2006, took a diploma program. Was reading 8 hours a day. I had a CGPA of 4.49 (Project Supervisor scored me B as A would have landed me there). Mind you, did 30 courses and never had a C and had more As, yet First Class slipped away. I immediately lost the ZEAL as i was rightly admitted. Now a BSc grad with 3.95. (I no fit come die). So if you need a first class any where, work work and work. At least 8 students had it. (Would have been the 4th in my dept to have it as well BUT ) |

@poster, make we hear word join, you wan chop the first class ni? At least our dumb president is a graduate of your so called UNIPORT from bachelor degree to Ph.D. Abeg stay focused and in tune with the trend of development in town with an opened brain instead of yearning for a meaningless first class. Think of how You can affect your environment positively and don't end up like that DUMB ASS if It's not a general UNIPORT syndrome. |

Re: Uniport No Be School by Jarus(m): 7:35am On Mar 04, 2012 |
One, First class is not 'given', it is earned. Two, performance in exams, nay eventual class of degree, is not entirely by the number of hours you spend reading. If you like forgo your sleep, your food, you room etc, it doesn't automatically mean you will get a First. You can read for 24 hours and someone will read foor 8 hours and will outperform you. Matter of fact, the heaviest reader in my class when I was in the uni was not among the Top 50 students and he struggled to end up with 3.50 on the dot. So your assumption that because you forwent your sleep, food, room etc, you must make a First is weak. |

Re: Uniport No Be School by Nobody: 7:38am On Mar 04, 2012 |
The OP should stop making noise. On your matriculation day, you were that your path to earning a good degree starts from your first semester in year 1 and that your CGP would be computer on the average. I'm pretty sure you heard about Uniben's system some time later as an undergraduate and you felt Uniport should emulate that. Every school have their system which works for them. I wonder why would you want the rules to be changed during the course of the game to suit you? |

hmmmmm. . . . at least its not as painful as mine anyways. . . . graduated with 4.48 in Biochemistry. saw hell in my 500 level. it isn't about the grades anyway, at least. i'm self confident that i'm good, thats all that matters to me now. |
Re: Uniport No Be School by moderattor: 8:06am On Mar 04, 2012 |
first class? Only one student graduated with it in my school. Yoruba schools tend to be freer with marks than frustrated igbo bribe devils calling them selves lecturers. A friend of mine, a room mate who was supposed to get a 4.0 on a scale of 4.0 was purposefully given an AB be cause no one in the school ever got it! Mean while our semesters last about 3 months some times students do 13 courses if you divide it proberly you get about one week plus to study each course. Tell me, what can you learn in java for example, in 1 week plus. You see why our CS students are empty heads? Nice school GP but empty head. As in stack computer illiterates. 2 Likes |

This is the most unrealistic and absurd thread that i have read on this forum, Did u think u were going to come here and express yourself in this way to gain pity or respect? because if it be the former, you have it from me in full dose, i can't stop to imagine how and what you will look like, typing this. Friend, i have failed to understand what you want from this, or were you just trying to make small talk here? Please, i have seen more illiterates with formal education in this country than you'll ever believe exists. Uniport or Uniben, they all give same impact to the man that is willing to personally develop himself. "A man can do anything and learn anything once he is willing to learn" -Ben Carson's gifted hands. So friend, it is a personal thing, that require constant update. First class or third class are positions that are meant to be filled by people and not ghosts. 1 Like |

It's actually very easy to make First Class and you don't really have to be a super star as many people seem to suggest on this forum. Besides, this talk that a Nigerian First Class is not recognized or a complete crap in the scheme of things in the world is a complete nonsense. I study in a top rated university in US and I have never taken a course without getting an A (even though A starts from 92). What I have come to realize is that First Class is more of a personal thing and has nothing much to do with where you graduated. It is driven by continuous zeal to excel and ability to present a superlative explanation where you peers are just comfortable with mere norms and standards. Besides, you must be equally good in all areas of your discipline. Really, it's a personal thing. IRAPADA: If you even need to read in order to pass an examination, you don't deserve to have a First class. Most top guys understand what is being taught right in class and are voracious readers, not to pass, but to have a more profound understanding of the concept beyond what the lecturers have to offer. That's why many a First class script end up being the marking scheme. Passing an examination has never and will never be the problem of a First class student, the aim has always been to write the marking scheme for the lecturer. |

From your user name, i dont think you deserve the First class, WisePluto wisdom doesn't come by declaring it on yourself, btw: what did you finish with, you didnt really mention: is it 2.1 or 2.2, If its 2.2 this thread should be deleted, You cannot be a first class material and fall to 2.2, Don't come here and discourage people from UNIQUE UNIPORT It gives you a whole package from academics to them social life, |
Re: Uniport No Be School by DerMeister: 9:55am On Mar 04, 2012 |
I agree with the OP one 1 issue, uniport is not a school; it is a waste of 4-5 yrs of anyone's life. I advice anyone NOT to send their wards, children to that place. It does not deserve to be called a university. BTW; The Chem. Engr dept in uniport has not produced a 1st class since it was started circa 1973 because the lecturers feel no 1 is good enough to get a 1st class, 1st class or 3rd class is not the end of the world. I know a 3rd class grad who's doing better than a 1st class grad from that school. I was fortunate to get a good job were I was trained in different parts of the world and have not used anything I learnt from School at work. I'm doing way better than those lecturers who said I/we would be failures and losers. |

Thanks very much for this Thread this should go to tell ppl that Uniport is not a school that awards grades anyhow ppl who have never seen the school think that the degrees are cheap and any dullard can afford them. have seen education in and outside the country, I can tell u that a serious Uniport graduate can hold the forte anywhere in the world. |
Re: Uniport No Be School by MyVicky: 10:03am On Mar 04, 2012 |
Having a First class is not enough as 'NL Forumites' have advised you and a First class in itself is not a determinant of your success in life, YOU determine your direction in life. In retrospect, I had class mates back then in the University who deserved to finish with a first class but could not. The department produced just six first class graduates; not because the 1st class guys were better but because they were smarter, more focussed, more determined and had a bit of the luck-factor or God-factor. The pure truth is that, today, the 1st class guys ain't more successful than the rest of the class and as a matter of fact, some of the 2.1 and 2.2 guys are better placed than the 1st class guys - though, we can't rule out the prevalent nepotism, god-fatherism or favoritism in the country. The First class degree is just an opportunity and one must not stop there. One thing I know is that if you are intelligent and work smarter, not only harder, making a first class isn't a big deal. You shouldn't also feel frustrated for not being able to make a 1st class. |
Re: Uniport No Be School by TonySpike: 10:27am On Mar 04, 2012 |
@ Irapada, your conclusion that all first class and distinction students are crammers is an hasty generalization. I won't waste time arguing the unnecessary with you. Graduating with a first class requires discipline and a nitty-gritty knowledge of your course of study. While it is generally difficult to finish with a first class in most Science and Engineering courses, it might be much more easier for humanities and management courses. For example, I have met first class Accounting graduates from a particular University (name withheld) who cannot think indepth and logically. The truth remains that the teaching philosophy in Nigeria needs to be reviewed. Meanwhile, I have lots of friends who graduated with first class in Nigeria and went ahead to graduate with distinctions in their M.Sc in the UK. These guys came top of their classes in their PG programmes ahead of Chinese, Indians, Europeans e.t.c. Someone once told me that Nigeria alone accounts for about 60% of the outstanding African students in the UK. Could this be true? |
