The Federal Government in conjunction with the World Bank has concluded plans to face-out gulley erosion in the vulnerable states within eight years through watershed management strategy.

The World Bank would within the period provide $508.5 million to finance the project in five southeastern states of Abia, Anambra, Eboyi, Enugu and Imo alongside Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto and Ogun States.

The plan was unveiled yesterday at a high profile working session where states and the World Bank team gathered to discuss the modalities.

Minister of Environment, Mrs. Hadiza Ibrahim Mailafiya, at the workshop, stated that erosion control measures should aim at preventing incipient gullies by making sure that vegetation covers critical to soil protection were not indiscriminately removed.
She expressed optimism that the project would record a huge success with adequate commitment from all stakeholders involved.

According to Mailafiya, the many degradation problems faced by Nigeria posses a great threat to the social and economic development of the country but there were financial and technical constraints that made it impossible to tackle the problem at once therefore would be tackled in order of priority.

“Soil erosion and associated hazards are among the most serious environmental issues causing major economic, social and environmental problems, erosion and micro-watershed management at scale required strong commitment of all stakeholders involved, erosion management could be sustainable if planned and implemented at watershed level and at scale,” she said.

The minister advocated that adequate sensitisation should be carried out to ensure community participation in the project. “Effective advocacy and sensitisation should be done, tackling the issue is capital effective and time consuming, so it should be done properly,” she added.

World Bank Country Director Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly said the project is at the moment undergoing the critical stage of appraisal after which strategies would be implemented.

She confirmed that President Goodluck Jonathan applied for World Bank’s support on the project to reduce vulnerability in the concerned communities and promote climate change resistance. She urged benefiting communities to participate not only in the design of the programme but also in oversight functions, as she promised that the bank would improve on its slow procedures on disbursing funds.

“The request of Mr. President was anchored on reducing vulnerability of concerned communities and promotes climate change resistance. We are on the appraisal stage to agree on financial structure of the project, we will do our best to improve our slow procedures,” she said.
