Manchester United are tracking £4.5m-rated Bayern Munich right-back Willy Sagnol.
Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce has told Manchester City that they will probably not be able to afford Michael Owen after City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson expressed an interest in buying the England striker.
Sheffield United boss Bryan Robson is trying to lure Bolton midfielder Gary Speed to Bramall Lane on a three-month loan deal.
Meanwhile, former Tottenham midfielder Gus Poyet has left Leeds to take the number two job at White Hart Lane.
Juande Ramos, the man expected to be named the new manager of Tottenham, deliberately made his Rayo Vallecano team play with just 10 men six years ago because they were not trying hard enough while leading a game 2-0 - his Spanish side held on to win the game.
