The former Wimbledon man has praised Papilo's choice as an Olympic torch bearer as an attestation to his focus and humility

Former Wimbledon striker John Fashanu has described the selection of former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu as a torchbearer for the London 2012 Olympic Games as a great development.

“It is a wonderful dream come true, not just for Nwankwo but for the whole nation, and am not surprised, Kanu has always lived for Nigeria,” Fashanu told the News Agency of Nigeria.

“We all should put our differences aside and celebrate this moment; he has done us proud like he had always done, ‘’ Fashanu added.

The report states that the retired 35-year-old former Super Eagle will be bearing the Olympic Torch along Coventry, one of the cities that the Olympic torch will pass through on its 8,000 mile 70-day relay journey.

Kanu had to overcome security checks on his background carried out on him by the U.K. security services. The Olympic touch relay is often used by organisers to drum up excitement for the Games and many high profile personalities are often used as members of the relay team, usually running not more than 100m.

“The young football talent should not allow fame to get to them, they should remain consistent, focused and humble, Kanu’s humility is unbelievable,” Fashanu said.

Kanu, founder of the philanthropic Kanu Heart Foundation, captained Nigeria’s Under-23 football team that won the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games football event. It was the first time an African team had won gold in football.
