Baayanjida:

You have no idea what you are talking about, Nigeria with it massive population of 185 million , is the most popular country in Africa (the China of Africa) ,and Hausa speakers in Nigeria alone stand over 50% of the population. Hausa is spoken in over 15 countries in Africa . The Hausa speakers (1st and 2nd speakers) in Nigeria alone are more than Swahili speakers in Kenya, Tanzania, Congo and Rwanda combined. Chad basin is the the most popular region in Africa for over 500 years to date, and Hausa has been the dominant language since.

You are being so sarcastic and ignorant . There are over 18 millions Hausa speakers in Niger,5 millions in Ghana, 2 millions in Togo,6 millions in Bénin, 3 millions in Chad,7 millions in Cameroon,1 million in Côte D'ivoire, 1 in Guinée Bissau, 2 millions in Sénégal, 3.5 millions in Mali,1 million in Libya, 2 millions in Sudan, and S.Sudan (Sudanese Hausa have their own Movies in Sudan).
West African is more populated Than East Africa.

Hausa was the first African language to ever Broadcast on international Radio (BBC) in March 1954. The first ever African newspaper (with exception of Arabic ) was printed in Hausa in 1910 using Ajami script , Arabic is not African.

By the way, Hausa is more beautiful sound than Bantu Kishiwahili ( Kishiwahili is 65% of Arabic loan words not proper Bantu) . Hausa is Afro-Asiatic language itself with over 80% of it genetic related to other Afro-Asiatic languages. Hausa uses only 10% of Arabic loans words (20% in Islamic perspective or the translation of Quran) since the beginning of Trans-Saharan trade in 11th century, and the rest of 80% words are Chadic whom Hausa is part of and the other 10% comes from neighboring languages mostly Nilo-Saharan (Kanuri and Songhai).

I would rather learn to speak Somali, Amharic or Oromo which are very related to Hausa as second language than Kishiwahili if I really want to sound phonetically more Arabic than Bantu.
If you don't want to speak Swahili fine but saying Hawsa is more common or more spoken is ridiculous. There are Swahili speakers in Central, East, South and West of Africa. It does not matter how populated Nigeria is, I know dome Hawsas who speak Arabic and can't speak a lick of Hawsa

Hello guys: GUINEA-CONACRY, NIGERIA, GUINEA-BISSAU, MALI, SENEGAL all have Fulani Presidents.
Fulanis are found largely in: Nigeria, Cameroon, Tchadi, Niger, Senegal, Guinea-Conacry, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Sudan, Central-Africa, Togo, Mali, Ghana, Benin, Gambia, Serra-Leone, Burkina-Fasso, Cote'd-Voire, Liberia, Congo, etc.
Fulani man Ruled Cameroon before Paul Bia, named Muhammadu Ahidjo. the strongest opposition party of Niger, its Presidential Flag bearer is a Fulani. in Nigeria alone, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Ahmadu Bello Sardauna, Atiku Abubakar, Shagari, Yar Adua, Muhammadu Buhari are all fulani people.
if you are called hausa-fulani means you are from Northern Nigeria, you maybe Kanuri, Nufe, Igala, Fulani, Jarawa or hausa. hausa-fulani is a name given to the Northers by Southerners(of Nigeria). as we the Northers call any person from southern part as Igbo or Yoruba despite there are lots of other tribes but we ignored because igbos and yorubas are the majority of southern part. likewise fulani and hausas are the majority of Northern part. but Fulani are quite different with hausas in culture and language but unite in religion. Hausa is a different language, Fulani is a different language.

I agree with everything you said here, well written.

But Tafawa balewa was bageri, not fula as widely believed.

The second song is a Fulani song, not a Hausa song.

Fulani from Bauchi(PulloBauchi), I wanted to add something to some of our brethren, Amadou Ahidjo, was half Fulani, half-Kordo (mother was a Female slave), but I still consider him a Pullo.

Fulanis are found in every country in West Africa, and even some countries in Central Africa (Chad, Central African Republic, Cameroon, Sudan). The Fulbe found in Central Africa speak the same Adamawaare spoken in North Eastern Nigeria near Adamawa, Cameroon, Eastern Niger Republic, etc.

BTW, I like your signature "Allah ko mawdo". Welcome to Nairaland.

I can see why some people would confuse Tafawa Balewa for being a Fulani though, his name is in the Fulfulde language. But yes, he was Bageri.

30,000,000 Amharic speakers (not including second language speakers)

I think it's because of his mother, I heard she IS fula? Or maybe it's because of the fula influence around them.

Lot of Ethiopians? Where you get that info from? Just cuz Swahili is spoken in East African countries, doesn't mean Ethiopians does too.
Ethiopia - Amharic and Oromiffa

I can't say much about the list, but Oromo and Amharic are definitely in the top 10. But there are more Oromo speakers than Amharic. I can make a detailed Top 10 and calculate all of it and publish it here, but it's very hard to do that especially with some languages, as the "first language/second language" figures should be taken with a pinch of salt.

All I can say is I don't know how Zulu ended up there.

I'm Ethiopian btw

Oromo, Amharic, Yoruba and Igbo shouldn't even be on the list.

How did they make it in the list and Fulani and Lingala did not?

That's laughable, maybe you should read a bit more.

Lingala has less than 15M speakers and Fulani has around 25M, more 30M now. Still less than Oromo, Yoruba and Amharic.

I don't know how Zulu ended up there as well. Fulani language (Fulfulde/Pulaar) should be there too, but it's not because there are also about 30 million speakers of the language. Like I said originally, the guy who created this thread doesn't know what they are doing and did not conduct thorough research.

That's completely untrue. Which country in West Africa speaks Swahili? That's right none. You know why? There are no Bantus in West Africa. There are Fulani speakers in West and Central Africa (don't know if you consider Sudan North-East Africa, but there are Fulani speakers there as well). People usually underestimate the amount of Fulani speakers because we are only 10 million out of the 170 million in Nigeria. But in other countries like Cameroon, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Gambia, etc. it is so commonly spoken, even by other ethnic groups.

Swahili is most widely spoken African language. Swahili is spoken in these countries: Tanzania 99%, Kenya 87%, Uganda 85%, Burundi 55%, Democratic Republic of the Congo 48%, Rwanda 28%, Swahili is also spoken in southern Somalia, Ethiopia and Sudan and northern Mozambique and the Comoros Islands. It has more than 11 million native speakers (speak Swahili as first language) and more than 120 million secondary speakers. That makes Swahili the largest African language.

Arabic is widely spoken in many African countries, but it is naturally not counted as one of African languages even though there's arabic-africans lives in Africa; it is because most of native African countries has a low percentage of Arabic speakers.

Since almost every African country was at one time a colony, speaking English, Portuguese, or French will also help you communicate. Many Africans will speak Creole or pidgin versions of these European languages and they may not be so easy to understand when you first hear them.

1) Arabic
2) Kiswahili
3) Hausa
4) English
5) Amharic
6) French
7) Oromo
cool Yoruba
9) Igbo
10) Zulu

No one knows Nigeria's real population or population of any tribe........ But the igbo populace by far dwarfs the Yoruba populace.

Fulfulde/Pulaar should easily be on the top 10 list. Fulani people are in every Western African country including Central African countries like Chad, Central African Republic, Sudan and even as far east as Ethiopia.
