There's too much corruption and insecurity in Naija. Except may be u are one of the cabals and u know ur way around the govt. then Nigeria will be good for you.
There are many countries that are way above UK in terms of standard of living. Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Saudi.. Just try your luck in one of those countries. Goodluck

My issue is not with the country, but with the people and their mentality.
They never seem to fail to affirm the stereotypes people have of them.

I wouldn't entrust them with something I know I can't afford to lose.

Trust a major source of wealth for TB BARNUM, COUNT LUSTIG and Yellow KID Weil all of them 419ners and oyibo people. If you are a Nigerian you are also not trusted. People must live outside their country repatriation of wealth is what made the western would what they are now.

OP their are a lot of rich and successful home made chaps that made legitimate money here. Do your homework and try. Leave gragra and flamboyance for the criminals because security is a major concern here. It is everywhr just that new and alien crimes have surfaced to challange our corrupt security system.

@shymmex - you solicited people's opinion on a very interesting question. unfortunately, this kind of response only results in name calling.

Perhaps one of the reason for the pessimistic attitude is that we don't listen to each other especially when the opinion is polar opposite of what we believe

Because it's yet to explore its full potentials, and Nigeria can't be worse than it is now - it's only going to grow. There are a lot of things to be optimistic about. If Nigeria could grow at the rate it has been growing for the past 10years - with the corruption, lack of power, lack of basic infrastructures, lack of security etc. prevalent in the country - imagine what the country would be like if everything is put in order..

-> We have a very functional police force. They have a 3 minute response time to neighbourhood-wide armed-robberies which span accross a couple hoursgrin
-> We have 24/7 electricity. In fact, we made sure we fixed our power issue before selling power to neighboring countries that "also" have 24/7 light. grin
-> We have a working water distribution system. grin Screw whoever says we don't. angry grin
-> We don't respect a man just because he is rich. angry We only respect him if he became rich by honorable means. grin
-> We are re-known around the world as being trustworthy, honorable people. We really do live up to the titles we love to smother ourselves with grin

It only shows why Nigeria would always remain backward and with people like you coming back to rant and flaunt whatever assets you've got from your response, there isn't any hope for the country.
You raised a topic and I criticized your post to show you the gap inherent in your post and your best conclusion is I hate Nigeria. Anyways, whether I hate Nigeria or otherwise, how is that your business and who are you to decide if I should stay back in Nigeria or leave
As for those who are doing security guards at 70, did they complain to you? Whatever they do with my life at 70 is their business and never yours.

God knows that I'll always be proud of this country. Since I don't expect the govt to make me rich why should I be frustrated by their inactivity? Did my father expect Aso Rock to feed us when he gave birth to me? If some people like let them hate 9ja, wherever they go and their country of Origin is required, they will still fill 9ja. Our problem has always been looking for who to blame for our failures, if not the govt its our leaders forgeting that we are also leaders in one area or the other. If I fail tomorrow, it'll be mainly cos of my inability to do what I should'v done not cos of a corrupt politician in aso rock. This doesn't mean that we shouldn't hold our govt accountable for what they should do but knowing that if foreigners make it here, then their is something good that we are overlooking.

Optimism is overated in d case of Nigeria and it is an unrealistic religion to b devoted to in d face of unassailable facts, figures and daily events all pointing to a bleek future. D leadership is not simply bad, it is a reflection of d horror dt makes up d entire population. Take it or leave it, there must be a genetic anomally we share as a people. All d problems of d developed world are here in Nigeria in addition to d third world problems of enormous bane of poverty, infectious diseases, illiteracy and selfish leadership and termite followership. you must realise dt d bulk of problems u are facing as a Nigerian living in d west stems from d fact of an immigrant as a second class citizen of dt land. Do you think if we have as many immigrant Whites in Nigeria as we have Nigerians in d west, wont they suffer worse than u are suffering. At present this place is uninhabitable for them.

GboyegaD: Seems my responses did not come well so I have to recopy and paste them.

For the Nigerians that pay taxes, what has been the benefit to them? Some silly people called government loots the monies and you expect the people to still believe. I used to pay about N37,000 in taxes monthly and the best I get are: Bad roads, insecurity, no access to portable water, power outages amongst others. The only solution I may profer is that we vote the right people into power however, how do we determine the right people in a country where mismanagement of fund exist everywhere across all ages from secular to religious people? In as much as we have the tendency to grow (although the probability is very low), until we leave our insincere lifestyles and choose to be truthful in words and deeds, I foresee no way forward.
Regarding other places in Africa as Biblical Hell on Earth is a part of our insincere lifestyle because there actually is no difference between them and Nigeria. Besides, many of them do not have a tenth of the natural and human resources we have thus, there isn't any fair basis for comparison here as comparing us both as African countries in my opinion isn't objective enough. This is not to say bad governance as we have amongst most parts of Africa hasn't contributed to this.

We do not need the international community to show how bad things are. Channels at different points have shown how bad the standard of living is in Nigeria. There was a documentary on al-jazeerah some weeks back which showed how bad Nigeria is and I almost wept for the lifestyle people live in Nigeria. Sometimes on this forum was a link to National Bereau of Statistics data where it was said that over 60% of Nigerians live under the $1 poverty threshold in Nigeria.
Below are links to Media showing how terrible Nigeria is perhaps you are waiting for BBC to show this to know how true it is:

Therefore, it is either you are oblivion of the truth or you are trying to shy away from it.

If they are stucked, it was because they did not do things the right way. However, if Nigeria was (is) good as you prtrayed, they wouldn't have been desperate to leave in the first instance.

Are this Nigerians having the right status? Nevertheless, this all tells you how bad the country is as such, they would prefer to stay back rather than come home and suffer more.

Nigeria is growing on papers i.e. if the facts are not twisted to generate the results. The essence of growth should be felt on the citizenry unfortunately, more people in recent times have lost their jobs compared to those who gets hired. Do you therefore count that as growth? Poverty reduction, unemployment rate reduction are part of indices for growth and not GDP figures only. In Nigeria, what we shout is the nominal GDP and not the real GDP. Let them compute the GDP deflator and calculate the real GDP and tell me if we are growing. Moreso, in Nigeria, the inequality gets bigger is that a sign of growth? The most annoying is the rate of embezzlement. Perhaps we should educate our government that the wealth of nations are not measured by how much the rich in the countries have in foreign bank accounts.

Most economies are just recovering from the recession of the late 2000s as such, you should expect that it may take a while to get the kind of job you want due to the excess labor experienced as a result of loss of jobs thus, wage rates are expected to fall. However, as more jobs are created, the demand side is stimulated and aggregate demand increases and for firms to match up supply with this demand, more labor is employed and this would continue till the economy gets back to its peak. If you say UK is dead, can you compare the number of new jobs created in the first quarter of 2012 to the number of jobs to created in Nigeria in the year 2011. If UK creates more despite having a lower labor force then you should know that your conclusion that UK is DEAD is false. Besides, I believe one's mentality and position to life is one of the things that gets one the job s/he want as it shows in our attitude and personality when being interviewed for any position.

Its better late than never, so you can start now.

It is well, you sure would make it.

The pessimistic clowns like you said are not pessimist but realist. Nigeria wouldn't change by mere wishes and falsehood as we have most times in papers about fundamental facts. They are just being truthful and they are concerned and want the economy to work.

DUDE you couldn't have said the word any better. Thank you.
Imagine so called "proud Nigeria" speaking ills of UK, USA, etc. yet their country can't even boost of half what those counries have talk less a quarter or even 1%. Its okay to stay in a progressive country, enjoying life without the struggle of your ordinary life in Nigeria while shouting that Nigeria is getting better, until someone experience that ordinary, painful, struggling life then they have mouth to determine whether or not Nigeria is on the road to greatness. I live outside of Nigeria and I'm damn proud to say that and even I know Nigeria isn't getting better; each time I visit that nation, what I saw during my visit is the same crap I saw while living in Nigeria.
Some people need to wake up from their slumber like I did, Nigeria is a dead country waiting to be buried. When we take a look at Nigeria of yesterday, the same sh1t is happening in Nigeria of today. No change, rather yet the country is getting worse.

I am proud to join the pessimistic (realistic) Nigerians around the world. Name to us, what we should be proud of? What future is there for Nigeria? The only nice thing about Nigeria and the only thing going for it is the diversity and even that isn't doing much now is it? Mscheww, don't waste our time with this your kumbaya story.
Re: Why Are Nigerians So Pessimistic About Nigeria? by bodejohn(m): 10:58pm On Apr 10, 2012
The OP asked a very good question but I see that only a few have answered him. Why are Nigerians so pessimistic about their country? I will answer this with my own personal story and you will easily see why we are. I moved into what can be likened to house some few months about 20months to be precise with 3 different loan repayments running on my neck. Within these months I have been paying N800 per month for day and night guards because I have not for once seen a police patrol vehicle in my community, I have contributed about N15000 for opening of layout roads and maintenance of the road because the LG care less, I have paid close to N70000 for erection of electricity poles and I have not had power for a week (I mean like 2hrs each day for 7 straight days) in the last 3months because the transformer I am connected to is very far and overloaded, the fuses break immediately it is replaced. All these did not even bother me until one day about 5 or 6months back, men of the Nigerian police force walked to my dad's office and arrested him for printing police ID cards without him owning a printing machine. I called a lawyer but he said he will not leave his office without collecting N3000. I have to settle the police officers with like N2000 for the release of my dad. As I type this I can still remember the shock in my dad's eye as I made payment for his "bail" he was never recalled from the station or asked to report afterwards. I buy N1500 petrol to run my generator for 2hrs only during weekdays and my dear PHCN still brings me utility bill every month for services never rendered. Before you ask me, I pay my taxes that are quite outrageous and I can put a copy of my tax clearances here as a prove. If you are in my shoes with all I have written here won't you be a pessimist?
