The chairman of Rangers Festus Onuh has promised the club will end a 28-year wait and win the NPL title as he doled out cash to the team.

Rangers have won the Nigerian league title six times but the last time was in 1984.

They are now second on the 20-team championship table with 32 points by the halfway mark of the season.

“We’re promising the people of Enugu we won’t let them down and by the end of the season we will be champions again,” promised Onuh on the inauguration of a new Rangers management board Wednesday.

“We will hand over the trophy that has eluded us for over 28 years to the Governor.”

New boss Onuh, who is a wealthy oil magnate, will later dole out various cash rewards to the players and coaches.

He also announced that henceforth the team will earn 300, Naira (about $2,000) for an away win, while an away draw will be rewarded with 200,000 Naira.

The players pleaded with the new chairman to review their salaries as they are “the poorest paid team in the league” and also urged that the team’s hostel be upgraded.

Rangers, along with traditional rivals Shooting Stars, were the dominant force in Nigerian football in the 70s and 80s.
