Has anyone in the house ever converted a vehicle from diesel to petrol engine? if yes pls share ur experience after d conversion if its worth it or not.
Re: Diesel To Petrol Engine by Ikenna351(m): 10:46am On Apr 18, 2012
Why would you want to convert to petrol engine? Isnt diesel engine better? Its more fuel efficient and durable. What is the reason for conversion?

Re: Diesel To Petrol Engine by oyinmio: 10:19pm On Apr 18, 2012
@ ikenna . diesel is expensive and my vehicle consumes a lot. Also there aren't many diesel mechanics like we have for petrol. I ve only one mechanic who is exploiting me but i have faithful petrol mechanics.
Re: Diesel To Petrol Engine by DECOtech(m): 11:02pm On Apr 18, 2012
Its quite pointless n cld be problematic to convert that diesel engine to petrol. Just get a complete petrol version.

Ok. That makes sense. About having only one or two clowns, sorry, mechanics, that claim to know how to fix diesels. But you should know that that your clown, again, sorry, mechanic, is part of your problem, not the vehicle. If He had known what he was doing, the car should still be make up for the high cost of diesel. It should still be economical compared to petrol counterpart. For example, an I4 petrol Peugeot 406 will give you about 30 mpg or less when driven in cities & 36 mpg on highway. But the I4 406 diesel will give more than 45 mpg when driven in the cities & about 57 mpg or more on highways. Now which is more economical, considering the cost of the litres of the two? Believe me, he was killing your vehicle, not fixing it.

My only fear with owning a diesel car in Nigeria is the parts availabilty & no mechanic knowledgeable enough in fixing diesels. Hence, the room for the exploitation from that crown. Not sorry for calling him that this time. So, I feel you bro!

Now, to your question, in your first post, yes its possible to convert diesel to petrol engine, but with conditions. The best would be to swap in a petrol carburretor engine in that engine bay & steer clear from EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) engine. Lets assume your car is 406. You maynot find a 406 carb petrol engine in Nigeria(because am not sure 406 ever had a carb engine) used parts market, but you can get an I4 carb petrol 605 engine. It will match. But you will have swap in engine mounts & possibly the I4 605 radiator. It will save you a lot of headache going for the carb engine, if you can find one. If you venture into EFI engine conversion here in Nigeria, then you have invited for yourself, with your own hand & money, the worst nightmare you would ever imagine, in your live.

If you going for EFI petrol engine, then the diesel engine harness/wires would be replaced with the petrol engine harness. The EFI petrol engine must have the complete factory sensors. The diesel fuel pump would be replcaed too with the petrol. Likewise the fuel tank will have to go too. The radiator may not match, so it may have to be replaced too. Then the almighty ECU/PCM (aka brainbox) must be replaced too with the petrol. But the main thing in the conversion, which usually are the nightmares to the owners who make such mistake, is the installation or proper connection of the engine harness to the sensors, grounds & to the ECUs. There is no guess work here. Any form of mistake here will either blow up the ecu, the engine will never start or it will never run properly. Such electric conversion must be done with the engine wiring diagram with full/complete engine harness. Trust me, 98% of rewires here do not know how to read diagrams. For me, even if I will go ahead with EFI petrol conversion, I must be the one to do the harness installation or swapping myself, with the wiring diagram. Otherwise, there wont be any conversion.

Is upto you. If you think you can deal with all stated above, is upto you, like i said. Its your call.

Ikenna.

@ Ikenna thank you so so much for all u ve said i will definitely not try it all . all I' ll do now is to sell d vehicle and get a petrol engine. U really make a lot of sense. God bless u.

It is very possible. I have seen threads on the topic, however, in Nigeria, kazeem will definitely cut corners and that won't be nice.

Bros always be informed before you make assumptions, my dad bought a lister generator back then in the 1990s and the tank capacity was like 5litres and it was a diesel engine, ol boy with two freezer, tv, fan and other minor things, the gen works from 7pm to 1 or 2am before another refill, I don't need anyone to tell me diesel engines aren't gulpers.

Also check cars with mpeg rated 55mpg city upwards and tell me what engine came in them (citreon, skoda, renault and co)

Do you know this for a fact? Diesel has a much slower burn rate than gasoline, diesel is oil, and non-volatile.

A modern 2.0 common-rail turbo diesel engine can achieve 58mpg, show me a 2.0 gasoline engine that could achieve close to that. A diesel engine has way better volumetric efficiency than a similar size gasoline one, and produces more power and torque too.

Service schedule? Less frequent with a diesel engine. Since it has no spark ignition, it relies solely on compression. This allows the service intervals yo be shorter than that of a comparable one. I run an Audi A8 4.2 Quattro and a Toyota Hilux 4x4 2.5 D-4D. Guess which one is more conservative in terms of fuel consumption? We're talking gasoline vs diesel.

Lastly bro, have you owned a diesel-engined vehicle before?

You change your oil every 6 weeks in your Diesel engine because the oil goes black - which it's supposed to. Diesel contains sulphur. There is no diesel-engined vehicle where the manufacturer specifies an oil and filter change every 6 weeks, not even in a 1978 Mercedes-Benz 911 or Bedford TJ850. You're wasting money.

I doubt your engine yells at you "my lube has turned black, change me, change me!"

I belong to a 4x4 club, and really work my Toyota Hilux 4x4. Some of the guys go rock climbing with their rigs, some on tough expedition trails. None change their oil as often as you do. You must tell me where you get your dough, because you must be super rich. Over 3 years, your vehicle will cost you an absolute fortune.

That still doesn't explain to all us uninformed folk why you do an oil service every 6 weeks.

Please tell all, we're all here to learn. I must be missing something.

Bro...I'm trying to help you.

Your "engineer" who recommended 6-weekly oil change intervals on your vehicle, and who also carries out the servicing (no surprises there) is ripping you off! He's got a vested interest in getting you to change your oil so frequently.

No way does your "engineer" know better than the manufacturers of your car / truck. He's using you as a cash cow, you're literally the goose that lays the golden eggs, so he has a lot to lose if you wise up, and service your car based upon manufacturer's recommendation. Don't allow this guy to use you as a regular source of income.

He's literally bending you over, pulling down your pants, and giving you the rough end of a pineapple, because you're permitting him to.
