Ijaw National leader, Chief Edwin Clark, has described the conviction of ex- Governor James Ibori in a London Court yesterday as sad and unfortunate. Reacting to the sentence, Clark described as mixed feelings, that a former Governor of oil-rich Delta State is facing “This kind of disastrous situation.” Speaking with the Daily Sun at Kiagbodo, his home town, Chief Clark further said, “we have been vindicated at last because most Deltans misunderstood us when we started the fight. Even the people believed that we manipulated his arrest. But, my joy is that he pleaded guilty to the charges of corruption and money laundering, it is nemesis that caught up with him. “It is very sad that someone who was governor of Delta State is being convicted in far away London, it is something we are receiving with mixed feelings. This is because he has dented the image of our state, he dented the image of the judiciary, dented the image of the Attorney-General of this country,” Lamented Clark, insisting that he was actually corrupt. Clark however, declared that he was not regretting his action, “I feel corruption is one of the greatest cankerworm eating deep into the fabric of this country; sadly there is corruption both in the judiciary and in government and every facet in this country.” Chief Clark who could not hide his emotion further said, “This is the day of judgment for Ibori. Imagine his wife, sister, girl-friend and lawyer in London have been convicted, I see no reason why he should be spared.” Also reacting, former minister of State for Education, Chief Kenneth Gbagi, described as unfortunate that ex- Governor James Ibori has ended up in this manner. Gbagi further said that the sentence will serve as a big lesson to others, adding, “what ever it is, it will make the society purer and better.” “Those serving and former political office holders who are masquerading that they are above the law, their sentence will surely come now or in the nearest future,” stressed the ex-education minister. http://odili.net/news/source/2012/apr/19/522.html |
