If you're looking for stand up positional defending, JT and Hyppia were your men.

Most prominent hybrid of both were Rio and Nesta.

But as far as I'm concerned, the most talented of the lot was Ledley King.

Juan would rate with Sol Campbell types. Great at defending through sheer physicallity, but lacking a touch of class in their technique to be ranked with the greats.

Best ball playing defender of that time was Lucio but also lacking a little bit defensively to be classed with them lots I mentioned.

Ledley King was the one who had it all for me. Strength, Physicality, Speed, touch and technique of a Rio with the positioning of a JT. That ninja wrecked his legacy staying at Spuds too long before injuries finally did him in.
