Andre Marriner will referee Monday's derby between Manchester United and Manchester City, the Premier League have confirmed.
Marriner, who was in charge of United's controversial defeat against Liverpool this season - a game overshadowed by the Patrice Evra-Luis Suarez racism row. He has also refereed United at Norwich, and Bolton - but has yet to take charge of a City match. His only previous Manchester derby was the game in February 2011 when Wayne Rooney sealed a 2-1 victory for United with a spectacular overhead kick at Old Trafford.

Ferguson was critical of Marriner after his side lost 2-0 to Liverpool at Anfield in September 2009, claiming he struggled to deal with the intimidating atmosphere.

"There were so many controversial things that happened we have to feel aggrieved at some of them," he said.

It was widely reported this afternoon that Howard Webb would be appointed by the Premier League. Webb is considered England's leading referee after taking charge of the World Cup final. However, his appointment would have angered those who accuse him of favouring United. Ryan Babel, the former Liverpool player, was disciplined last season for posting a picture of Webb wearing a United shirt.Earlier this season, Webb awarded United two controversial penalties in the 3-3 draw against Chelsea.

United midfielder Nani has today expressed his confidence that the champions will beat their neighbours and retain the title. However, the Portugal winger said their concentration must improve if they are to win a 20th title.
