Come to think of it,the Nigerian refineries are said to be always bad,which resulted to the issue of subsidizing fuel. Why cant we maintain an ordinary refinery,yet the exploring equipment for oil never get faulty? Which of the 2 should be more easy to maintain? The exploration equipments ever from installations remain functional after 50years,serving the purpose of the govt, why is the refinery which should serve the purpose of people not functional.

They (FG) don't actually explore or drill for crude oil. If they did, it would also be run like the refineries

Exploration and production of oil in Nigeria is carried out by the international oil companies (Shell, Chevron, Total etc) in Joint ventures partnerships with the NNPC. The FG does nothing and only gets oil rent. The IOcs do all the work. If the FG actually did the exploration and production, the same problems plaguing the downstream sector (refineries) will crop up namely: gross incompetence, unconscionable sleaze and outright mismanagement. The NNPC / FG cannot mismanage the upstream sector because it is operated by the IOCs.

Just compare the upstream sector of the oil industry run by the IOCs versus the downstream run by the NNPC. The upstream is efficient and well-run while the downstream is plagued by corruption and incompetence. The refineries will work if they were run by the likes of Shell and not by inept civil servants and politicians.
