Russia says it is prepared to use "destructive force pre-emptively" if the US goes ahead with controversial plans for a missile defence system based in Central Europe.
The warning came after the Russian defence minister said talks on missile defence were nearing a dead end.
Moscow fears that missile interceptors would be a threat to Russia's security.
But the US and Nato say they are intended to protect against attacks from Iran or North Korea.
"A decision to use destructive force pre-emptively will be taken if the situation worsens," chief of the Russian defence staff Gen Nikolai Makarov said.

Two days of talks opened on Thursday in Moscow between Russia, the US and Nato. Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said the talks were "close to a dead end", but Nato said it remained hopeful of reaching a deal.
Nato Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow told the BBC that Russia's fears of a European missile defence shield were "based on some flawed assumptions" and did not weaken
Russia's nuclear deterrent.
Gen Makarov also said that if the European shield was built, Russia
would respond by putting more powerful warheads on its own
ballistic missiles.
Russia and the US have been at odds over the issue of missile defence since 2000, ever since the idea was first put forward by then-President George W Bush.
President Barack Obama, who succeeded Mr Bush in the White
House in 2008, scrapped plans for a network of bases spread across Poland and the Czech Republic with the capacity to intercept long-range missiles. But in 2010, the US signed an agreement with Poland to use an old airstrip at Redzikowo, near the Baltic coast, as a missile defence base.

This is my one problem with the US. Many times they act in a derogatory and inciting manner. Installing missile defense shield in poland and czech republic is a subtle push to these East European countries that the US and NATO gat their back. But they shouldnt be so stupid to forget what happened to Georgia in 2008. The US has no permanent friends, only interests.

Wouldnt the US resist if Russia installs defense shields in Cuba. The Cuban missile crisis is a good example where these two nuclear power nations could have wiped out the earth.

The United States Foreign policy is easy to understand. It can be summed up in one sentence: Prevent any regional power from becoming a global power. The way it does this is by supporting small countries that are under the threat of being sucked into the spheres of influence of regional powers. Hence Pakistan vs India, Iraq vs Iran, Japan and Taiwan and the Philippines vs China, the former Soviet Republics and Central Europe vs Russia.

This system continued in the Middle East because in the 1990s Iraq decided that instead of fighting Iran it would pick on smaller countries, so that it could be the big regional power. Since no one in the region could fight both Iraq and Iran, the United States had to go in itself and try to fix things directly. It didn't work as smoothly as planned, but things seldom do when you resort to war.

yeah, you are right. the throat cutting self interest of the US is obvious. Hugo Chavez called it "the arrogance and self-fishness of the American imperialism". A country that will sell crack through the CIA to her citizens to fund renegades to topple the leader of a sovereign country (Nicaragua). Think of the bay of pigs invasion in cuba, invasion of iraq, afghanistan, iran, venezuela, vietnam etc. America is the biggest terrorist. They have funded assassination of leaders from latin america to asia with impunity and total disregard!
