The dumbest waste of OUR money ever. What utter nonsense. Are they also going to force police to everyone's house to make sure they are using the bulbs? You want people to use energy saving bulbs then put higher tax on non-energy saving bulbs. This is just so ridiculous it it shocking. It is OUR MONEY they are using to do this?? Nigeria is not rich. There are many areas crying for funding. Unbelievable! 1 Like |

Beaf: The old style bulbs are being phased out the World over anyway. I don't see what the fuss is about. The problem is not about the bulbs.... the issue is about the process. Who determine how many bulbs a household needs? How do you apply for the bulbs and how are they distributed? Don't forget we have no reliable censor data not to of the numbers of houses in Nigeria. The smart thing to do would have been to ban the sale of all incandescent bulbs say in 9 months. ban the sale of all 100watt bulbs in 3 months and you'll see a better result |

Beaf: When someone starts a topic with "clueless id!ots," you sort of catch on the the person is the id!ot.@ Beaf, nobody is saying it is not a good idea but as my doctor froends would say, they are treating the symptoms not the disease. Energy saving bulbs are only useful when there is power to use them. In some arteas, there's no light for months at a time. Of what use are the bulbs going to be for such people? The Prof should first make sure the power is more regular before distributing the bulbs. Till then,I think more people would appreciate it better if generators or inverters were distributed. |

Beaf: The old style bulbs are being phased out the World over anyway. I don't see what the fuss is about. Oga softly on the OP now. I have over 30 energy saving bulbs in my house but they are useless whenever power drops below 110v. So what's the goodnews about the government freebies. We want power and not some cheap solution borrowed from 17 year old college student. Will the incandescent bulb iron my clothes? Have they ever thought of the health hazards of the bulbs? Argh!! 1 Like |

one tungsten electric bulb i.e(common yellow light electric bulb) consume 6 times of the power consumed by the low energy bulbs..IMHO this is a welcome development if at all this is not one of those empty promises..it will go a long way in preserving energy..this is long overdue |

Our "leaders" love to copy policies from other climes without considering our peculiar situation. South African Power companies distributed free gas cookers/cylinders to its customers so as to reduce increasing load on their network arising from electric cooker usage which consumers far more energy. FG should concentrate on boosting Power Generation and proper metering of customers so they pay as they consume.Nobody will tell the consumer to switch off appliances when not in use. Why even appoint Prof. Barth Nnaji as Power Minister when he is the chairman/owner of a Private Genco based in the SouthEast of Nigeria. Will he be happy seeing his competitor(PHCN) working effectively? |

Hello all, I've laughed my head off here. this is really cool and for the first time NL made me forget a serious thing! I've been laughing so much that ......... you guys are just too much on a serious note I had believed this was all lies until someone (u know who) made his observations which made me believe it might really be true well, my position is this: - is this part of the Sure - P programs? - why cant govt just do the most feasible and realistic thing - increase tariffs on the other bulbs by 100%; reduce tariffs on the energy saving bulbs - how can govt use Sure P's money to bring in bulbs; who is supposed to monitor/administer the funds?. - why would govt exposure itself to possible avenues of fraud and corruption by championing this; why not just announce tax holidays equivalent to the amount to be spent for 5 firms willing to bring in quality bulbs and let the market find its level? Energy saving bulbs are good; they are not that 'expensive' as some wants to make it look; policies to encourage its usage is what government needs to look into and it does not work well in low voltage situations. on a lighter mode - are the bulbs being manufactured by Siemens AG? thank you |

grafikii: The Power Holding Company of Nigeria Plc (PHCN) plans to distribute energysaving bulbs to all households and offices in an attempt to maximize the energy consumption of Nigerians. The project, expected to commence in three weeks time, is said to be financed through oil subsidy withdrawal fund. Minister for Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, revealed this at the weekend after a three-day power summit in Enugu. They don't need to buy and distribute energy saver bulbs this urgently. Disguy got it spot on when he talked about banning the use of normal bulbs. In most nations of the world, normal bulb are no longer made or imported. This idea has been operational in Ghana for several years now and you will hardly find anyone using normal bulbs anymore anywhere in Ghana. Shops no longer stock bulbs that are not energy savers. This is merely meant to divert attention away from the FG's inaction over the revelations involving the subsidy scam. The thinking will be to distract "simpletons" (Nigerians) by doing something 'impacting' on a critical sector (power) the removal of subsidy has "funded". Nothing else makes sense since most Government worldwide have not taken this silly approach as there is absolutely no need or pressure to spend money on what people themselves must spend on as ongoing household expense. People will always buy new bulbs to replace dead ones. Why not simply create a situation where , gradually, the only bulb available to buy is an energy saving one? Why tell us you must use subsidy removal savings this unneccessarily and all to begin very quickly and conveniently in the middle of a time many are preparing to confront the FG over its inaction against subsidy scammers? Folks, see through the "scam". I expect more of these frivolous actions from a Government desperate to divert attention away from its inaction. No one should fall for the antics of this corruption-friendly Government. Bring subsidy scammers to book. All this window dressing is fooling no one. |

i don't get it...you find it difficult to distribute prepaid meters;i haven't gotten mine for the past 2 years now. how can i trust them to distribute the bulbs? and i need at least 30 to start with...wonder how many shipload containers we will need to achieve this project? |

onyxo76: i don't get it...you find it difficult to distribute prepaid meters;i haven't gotten mine for the past 2 years now. how can i trust them to distribute the bulbs? and i need at least 30 to start with...wonder how many shipload containers we will need to achieve this project? This is the crux of the matter. If there is no ulterior motive, why not make this an issue of policy change , as done everywhere else, that will not swallow government funds ? I.e use new policies to ensure only energy saving bulbs come into the country? I have seen it work well in Ghana over the past few years to the point energy saving bulbs is virtually the only type you get today. When you look at the population of Nigeria one realises how incredible m.oro.nic this idea is considering that replacing bulbs regularly is household expenses everyone will face. This is simply the same as the nonsense of buying buses ,as "palliatives", from subsidy removal savings i.e empty actions meant to distract and decieve Nigerians. |
