ASUU Strike: Students Threaten Clamp down on Private Universities University Campus • Union alleges intimidatio, infiltration of rank Toba Suleiman and Omon-Julius Onabu Believing that the prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which has paralysed studies in public universities in the country is being sustained because the children of influential people in the country are ensconced in the private universities, some members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) are already contemplating attack on the private universities as a way of compelling the federal government to take a more urgent action in resolving the stalemate between ASUU and the government. The students, operating under the umbrella of the NANS also staged a peaceful protest in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, to register their displeasure over federal government's alleged insincerity. Speaking at the gathering Thursday, Mr. Steven Adara, a student leader in Ekiti State University (EKSU), noted that those in government and some prominent Nigerians were not helping the matter, as they were in the habit of sending their sons and daughters to private schools and overseas. "We will mobilise ourselves and ensure that we disrupt academic activities in most of the private schools, because it is the sons and daughters of the affluent that are in these schools," he said. Armed with placards with various inscriptions, the students flayed the federal government for its failure to honour the agreement it had with ASUU since 2009, saying agreements were expected to be honoured in good faith. The students expressed their displeasure to what they described as a continuous recession in the standard of education since Dr . Goodluck Jonathan emerged as the president of the country. Speaking on behalf of the students, Mr. Asefon Sunday, the Director of Action and Mobilisation, NANS, South -west pointed out that between 2000 and 2011 that the Nigerian government earned about N48.48 trillion from the sale of oil alone against N3.10 trillion earned between 1979 and 1999. He added that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in 2012 financial year alone realised the sum of N5.12 trillion as revenue generated from tax paid by the masses. "With this tremendous upswing in the revenue at the disposal of the federal government, one would have expected such to translate to commensurate improvement in the quality of Nigeria's public education as well as other social services. He further condemned the inability of the federal government to budget a reasonable amount of money to education sector as recommended by UNESCO which is 26 percent of the country's total budget. Asefon noted that some countries with smaller Gross Domestic Product (GDP) like Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya, Morocco and Botswana had their budgetary allocations to education sector. According to him, the allocation to education has been oscillating between 31 per cent, 20 per cent, 23 per cent, 17.7 per cent and 19 per cent, 8.5 per cent in recent years. . The students equally urged the state universities like Ekiti State University (EKSU), Lagos State University (LASU), Osun State University,Olabisi Onabanjo University to slash their school fees immediately. Meanwhile, the ASUU has accused the federal government of resorting to acts of intimidation and blackmail in its efforts to frustrate and break the ranks of the country's universities' academic staff, whose indefinite strike was over eight weeks old. This is even as ASUU vowed to deal with blacklegs that could emerge among its members who the government might recruit in its alleged desperate effort to divide the union and intimidate it into abandoning the ongoing nation-wide industrial action. In a joint statement presented by its zonal coordinator, of the Benin Zone of ASUU, Dr. Sunny O. Ighalo, said: "The strike has indeed moved into a critical phase where government is now applying the instrument of intimidation and blackmail and other gimmicks to undermine the struggle. "The purported disbursement of the N130 billion to universities arising from the meeting of Pro- Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors was aimed at breaking our ranks and is not acceptable to our union." It noted that Nigeria was rich enough to afford what the union asked for based on the universities’ 'Needs Assessment Report', which actually put the financial resources required to overhaul the nation's university system at N1.5 trillion. "We believe Nigeria has the resources needed to revitalise our universities and save the nation the disgrace of having to send our children to less endowed countries for university education." "While N500 billion minimum is expected, going by the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of January 2012 for the revitalisation of universities, government claimed that it distributed N100 billion (20 per cent) to the universities," it further said. The body noted that it would not compromise on the indefinite strike, saying "the federal government should demonstrate integrity" and honour to the letter the agreement it entered into without duress. "What makes a person or an organisation - including governments - honourable is honouring an agreement freely made". The union leaders swore to continue the strike and advised the federal government to consider returning to the negotiation table with ASUU on how to fulfill the extant agreement signed between it and the union. |

ASUU strike: “University students have advised us to continue” – Fagge The end to the industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, is not in sight as the union’s President, Dr. Isa Fagge, has said that students don’t want lecturers to end the strike. Fagge said the students had instead urged them to continue with the industrial actions since the Federal Government did not want to implement the agreement it had with union since 2009. The union leader who stated this in an interview with Punch said they had decided to heed the advice of the students to continue the strike until the Federal Government is ready to shift ground. “Our students have come out to say they don’t want us to call off the strike until the Federal Government answers us, because they don’t want us to call off now and later we go back to strike again. So, we are heeding the advice of our students. “There are issues and agreement they can implement without money. Why don’t they begin with those ones?” He asked. Fagge added that it was unfortunate that the government had decided to pull out of the negotiations with ASUU, stressing that the union would not be intimidated. He said, “Now, government has pulled out of the dialogue. We thought we were the ones going on strike, but now government has also gone on strike”. |

ASUU strike: Mark, Suswam seek spiritual intervention, cautions against inflammatory comments President of the Senate, Senator David Mark yesterday took stock of the lingering Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike and pleaded with the religious leaders across the country to quickly intervene in the crisis rocking the nation’s education sector. Addressing the 2nd plenary Assembly of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in Otukpo Benue state yesterday, Senator Mark said the differences between the Federal Government and ASUU requires spiritual intervention in order to end the imbroglio. This is against the backdrop of the collapse of dialogue between the federal government negotiating team and ASUU over the latter’s demand. He lamented the plight of the students who have been deprived of the stable academic calender and the consequences of the strike, pointing out that “the culture of confrontation and conflict does not build harmony between and among people, therefore, we must always seek the culture of dialogue, reconciliation and forgiveness. We have a duty to work hard to overcome all barriers to peace.” On the issue of insecurity in the country, the President of the Senate stated that the present state of insecurity in Nigeria is worrisome considering the high number of innocent Nigerians that dies everyday as a result of bombing, armed robbery, road accident, pagan ritual activities and cultism. He charged Nigerians not to use religion for negative purposes, “Religion is to unite and not to divide, to love and not to hate, to gather and not to scatter, to be just and not to be unjust.” Senator Mark also frowned at provocative utterances by some highly placed people that are capable of tearing down the society saying such utterances must be curtailed. He however admonished that the present religious, economic and political turmoil should not scare anybody saying “as Nigerians we should remain resolute and focussed. As a people, we should continue to fast and pray. I acknowledge the fact that prayer without good work is dead. We should also embark on serious good work at all levels to ensure good governance and a better Nigeria.” Senator Mark was optimistic that Nigerians are capable of overcoming the challenges only if we work together and see ourselves as one people binded by a common mission and purpose. Earlier, the Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam called for partnership between the church, government and the people in order to fast track political development and stability in the country. Suswam urged the Bishops to use the session to appeal to ASUU to shift ground as the Federal government has made reasonable concessions to their demands to give peace a chance and return students back to schools. In his welcome address, the President, Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama urged Christians to be loyal to biblical teachings in all their dealings. Kaigama called for interior purifications among Nigerians adding that with renewed commitment to the task of teaching and sanctifying, Nigeria will over come her travails. He charged governments at all levels to channel resources towards the welfare and security of the citizenry even as he urged the clergy to pray for leaders at all levels. Signed: Paul Mumeh, Chief Press Secretary to the President of the Senate |

ASUU denies political undertone in industrial action Lawmaker flays govt on strike THE striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has denied any political undertone in their asking for full implementation of the four-year old agreement reached with the Federal Government. ASUU insisted that the Federal Government, rather than the union, is politicising the issue through propaganda. Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State had, while hosting the National Union of Benue State Students, alleged that the ASUU strike was becoming a political action other than agitation for the welfare of university lecturers. In a swift reaction, Chairman of ASUU, the University of Ibadan (UI), Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, asked Suswam to guard his utterances and limit them to the mandate given him by the Federal Government. Meanwhile, the member representing Akoko-Edo Federal Constituency and former president of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers ((NUPENG), Peter Appatasson, yesterday faulted the Federal Government’s stance on the lingering ASUU strike, stating that it was wrong for government to renege on an agreement it reached with lecturers few years back. Speaking to journalists shortly after the Uneme National Development Association (UNDA) released plans to launch a N100 million education fund for the communities scattered in Akoko-Edo, Etsako Central, Etsako East and Esan South East local councils of Edo State, the lawmaker, however, appealed to both parties to return to the negotiation table. Nevertheless, he disagreed with the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, that the country could sink financially if all ASUU’s demands were met. Carpeting Nigerian leaders for hypocrisy, Ajiboye asked them to demonstrate their love for the country by withdrawing their children from private universities both within and outside Nigeria and stop health tourism by using the health facilities they provide for Nigerians. He insisted that the union would not resume work until the government fully implements the agreement reached with the union. Meanwhile, President of UNDA, Dayo Alabi, said the education fund being launched would be in aid of indigent but intellectually sound and gifted Uneme people in all the communities in the state. |

ASUU strike: Union warns Maku to stop making unguarded comments The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has condemned a recent statement credited to the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, on the ongoing strike. Maku had stated that Nigeria may shut down if the Federal Government accepts the demands of the striking lecturers as so much may leave government coffers. The union in a statement by Zonal Coordinator, Calabar zone, Dr. Charles Ononuju, described the Minister’s statement as irresponsible and careless, adding that his position on the matter shows he was ignorant of the agreement between it and the government. While calling on Nigerians to ignore Maku, ASUU advised him to desist from making unguarded comments that could worsen the situation. ASUU said: “Nigerians should ignore the careless utterance by the Minister of Information that the country will shut down if ASUU’s demand is met. It seems the minister has not seen or read the 2009 ASUU/FG agreement. “The country has not shut down with constant government wastages and billions of dollars being stolen. “The minister should apologise to Nigerians for such unguarded comments and stop playing politics with the future of Nigerian child,” it warned. ASUU had embarked on the current action early July, following the inability of the government to implement the 2009 agreement reached by both parties. |

ASUU strike: Students blame Nigerian government, call for prompt resolution ASUU has been on strike since July 1. Many students have lamented the ongoing nationwide strike by university lecturers, ASUU; calling for a quick resolution of the dispute with the federal government. ASUU has been on strike since July 1 after it accused the federal government of reneging on a 2009 agreement with the union. A 400-level student of the University of Jos, Lukman Rahim, expressed his disappointment at the strike that has taken hundreds of thousands of Nigerian students away from class. “I must express my deep and profound disappointment in the way and manner the federal government has chosen to handle the education sector of the Nigerian economy, a sector which is supposed to be described as ‘primus interepers non secondum’; that is first amongst equal and second to none,” he said. Mr. Rahim, a student of the Department of Accounting and former financial secretary of the university’s Students Union said “in term of priority, education has been jettisoned into judicial lagoon never to see the light of the day.” The final-year student said he has used the opportunity of the strike to engage in businesses such as “the customization of T-shirts, souvenirs, printing of exclusive posters, invitation cards, and complementary cards.” “We are all waiting for the clarion call to be made (for ASUU to call off its strike) so that we can all go back to school to finish what we started,” he said. Another student, Kehinde Olufisayo, a 400-level History student of the University of Lagos blamed the federal government for the strike. “The demands of ASUU are genuine, being that the federal government was sane in the midst of signing the MOU in 2009, again the federal government has paid so much attention lately on the private enterprises by funding them with huge amounts,” he said. He, however, appealed to the striking lecturers to consider the interests of students who are at home because of the strike. Another student, Blessing Onuha, a 100- level student of the University of Enugu, said the strike has enabled her to “earn more money so I could take care of myself when ASUU decides to call off the strike.” “Before I gained admission into the university to study Nursing, I wanted to be a makeup artist because I stayed at home for 3years before I gained admission; you know how it is in Nigeria with JAMB? So I went to a makeup school to acquire the knowledge and then I finally got the admission but now am home actually practicing and getting more money’, she said. Ms. Onuha advised the striking lecturers to ensure they resolve their issues with the government permanently and not make strikes a regular occurrence. “I had hoped that if ASUU could just do this strike once and for all and get it done with so that there will be no more strike again, because I had heard my aunties and uncle say that the strike has been on for a long time, like it’s seasonal. “I hope the government can solve the problem so it does not become a habit that ASUU must go strike almost every year’, she added ASUU declared an indefinite strike based on the refusal of government to honor the terms of a 2009 agreement and a 2012 memorandum of understanding it signed with the lecturers on improved welfare for staff and increased funding for public universities. |
