ASUU Insists FG Has Shown No Commitment to Ending Strike • Says no motivation to celebrate independence By Damilola Oyedele The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has reiterated its stance that the federal government has not shown any commitment or seriousness towards the implementation of the 2009 agreement as a way of resolving the ongoing strike which commenced on June 30. The union also said the government has not given Nigerians much reasons to celebrate the 53rd anniversary of the country as an independent nation, especially when considering the high rate of insecurity in the country. The Chairman of ASUU (UniAbuja chapter), Dr. Clement Chup, while speaking with THISDAY in a telephone interview yesterday, lamented that President Goodluck Jonathan, in his presidential chat aired on Sunday night, chose to describe the ongoing strike as one that had taken on a political dimension. "Unfortunately, when he was asked the nature of politics, he did not respond, he did not tell us how the strike is political. So, I do not know what exactly he means by saying the strike has turned political. “Government clearly has not shown any commitment and from what the president was saying yesterday, you could see that there is no commitment: the way he was talking about the strike, as if it is one small issue that does not matter. If he so feels so, we are saying that we are ones at the receiving end and we are committed to this strike," Chup said. He disclosed that the strike would persist as all state congresses of the union had rejected the pleas of Vice-President Namadi Sambo, who engaged the leadership of the union in talks about two weeks ago. The vice-president, he said, did not offer anything 'concrete', adding that the strike, which was declared total, indefinite and comprehensive from the onset, would not be reneged on by the union. "There was some discussion with the vice-president two weeks ago and we took it to the congresses, that the vice-president simply made appeals to ASUU, there was nothing concrete. And so the congresses resolved that there was nothing substantial and they are continuing with the strike. This is to tell you that we have not heard anything concrete or serious from government. From the commencement of the strike we declared clearly that it was a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike, and that unless government shows commitment to the implementation of the 2009 agreement, we are not reneging on this strike, it remains so," he added. Chup, who mourned the students who were murdered by gunmen at the College of Agriculture, Gujba, Yobe State on Sunday described the attack as highly unfortunate, inhuman and insensitive. He called on the government to rise up to the occasion and provide security of lives and property for all Nigerians. "For a matter like this, are we saying this people who are perpetrating this lawlessness and this criminality are above government? What is the business of government if it cannot provide security? This criminals have to be checkmated," he stated. Commenting on Nigeria's 53rd independence anniversary, Chup said: "At 53, maybe we can just celebrate that we are still a nation, but our government has not given us enough reasons to be hopeful, there is no motivation. Even yesterday during the media chat, one was disappointed because there is nothing he took serious, there is no concrete measure to solve any problem. One begins to wonder what kind of people we have in government: no commitment or seriousness, or responsibility. As a country, if we have the right people in position, we would make progress." |

ASUU strike: More problems as Federal Government invokes ‘no work no pay’ rule As the nationwide ASUU strike continues unabated, it appears the ‘end of the tunnel’ is still at a distance, as the Federal Government has invoked the ‘no work, no pay’ labour policy against the protesting lecturers. DailyPost has learnt that some members of ASUU from federal universities are yet to be paid both their August and September salaries, a situation majority of them said was not unconnected to the ongoing strike and the directive issued lately by the federal government to Vice Chancellors to apply the labour rule of ‘’ no work, no pay.’’ Some branch chairmen of the Union had earlier told Daily Sun that Vice Chancellors of various universities have been asked via text messages to suspend the payment of salaries to academic staff that are currently on strike, asserting that the decision was beginning to affect non-academic staff as well. An exco member who spoke on the development said he confronted the university management alongside his other exco members over salary delays, and were shown some text messages, directing that protesting lecturers must not be paid their salaries. The member had stressed that the application of ‘no work no pay’ rule would be ineffective as the striking lecturers were not on strike because of salaries. Relatively, the ASUU chairman, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Dr. Biodun Badmus, had disclosed that the vice chancellor received some text messages not to pay ASUU members their Salaries, even though he defended that August salaries were yet to be released to the school. He told Daily Sun thus, “Any vice chancellor that has paid August salary did so using the university’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). We are not bothered about the salary issue, because at the end of the day, they will still pay us.” |

Lawyer Sues FG, ASUU Over Strike Published on October 2, 2013 by · 2 Comments A Lagos-based legal practitioner, Daniel Onwe, has dragged the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, before a Federal High Court in Lagos, southern Nigeria, over the lingering crisis between the two bodies which has led to the closure of public universities in the country since 1 July. In a motion dated 30 September, 2013, Barrister Onwe is seeking an order of court to compel ASUU to call off the strike it embarked upon in protest over the unwillingness of government to implement certain aspects of the agreement they reached over the parlous state of Nigerian universities and other issues. In a 15-paragraph affidavit filed along with the motion, Onwe is asking the court to declare that the indefinite strike embarked upon by ASUU, leading to the closure of government owned universities for three months, violates the fundamental rights of the students affected. He argued that the continued strike action by ASUU has traumatized many students who now engage in all sorts of vices. Onwe posited that the plight of the affected students has worsened as their contemporaries in private universities continue to attend lectures while they remain idle at home. He urged the court to compel ASUU to open the universities for lectures to resume while their negotiation with the Federal Government continues. No date has been fixed for hearing of the suit. —Henry Ojelu |

ASUU strike: VCs to meet in Akure on Monday Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities will meet in Akure, Ondo State, on Monday to deliberate on the strike embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. This came as students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife on Wednesday, urged the Federal Government to implement immediately the various agreements it reached with labour unions in the nation’s tertiary institutions. Also, OAU lecturers have insisted that the ongoing nationwide strike is not politically motivated. Lecturers in the public universities embarked on strike last July to protest against the non- implementation of the agreement they reached with the FG in 2009. Other associations like the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union have also threatened to embark on industrial action to protest the non- implementation of agreements they reached with the FG. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Adedayo Fasakin, while addressing journalists in Akure on Wednesday, said the vice-chancellors would also discuss other problems facing the nation’s universities. |

ASUU strike end unknown – Fagge The President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge has said that although the Union has begun consultations among its members following discussions with Vice President, Namadi Sambo, it cannot confirm when it will call off the ongoing strike. Fagge spoke with journalists in Makurdi shortly after the Union’s congress meeting at the Benue State University. According to him, the body’s position would be made known to the public after consultations are concluded. President Jonathan had two weeks ago delegated his Deputy, Sambo, to take over negotiation with ASUU after several efforts by Benue state Governor, Gabriel Suswam-led Needs Assessment Implementation Committee failed. The Union leader maintained that the struggle would continue until the 2009 agreement was met. He added that all ASUU wants is “implementation of the recommendation of the National Coordinating Committee, which would enable our universities to be fully engaged in research to produce graduates that would meet the test of time.” Fagge denied insinuation that it was playing politics with the strike, insisting that the federal government is the party doing so. Reacting on the threat by Governor Gabriel Suswam to enforce the labour law of’ ‘ no work no pay’ on the striking BSU lecturers as from this month, if they fail to resume work, the ASUU president urged him to go ahead with his plan if he feels it is the best option. “Let Suswam go ahead and do whatever he likes. Lecturers have said they cannot continue working if the academic environment is not conducive. If Governor Suswam is not happy with ASUU’s stance, then so be it.” |

ASUU strike: FG begs NUT not to join protest The Federal Government had on Wednesday, appealed to the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, to withdraw its proposed solidarity strike with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. The Supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, made the appeal in Abuja, at a meeting with the members of NUT over the proposed industrial action. Recall that the NUT last week gave the Federal Government two weeks ultimatum to honour the agreement they had with ASUU or face total shutdown of the education sector in the country. The Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu, who was present at the meeting, said the Federal Government had already implemented 80 per cent of the 2009 agreement they had with ASUU. According to Wike, “The 2009 agreements with ASUU have a number of issues and I want to tell you that the Federal Government, has already met 80% of the critical needs. It is remaining only two major components which are earned allowances, and they are expecting the Federal Government to release N400billion annually for infrastructural development. “ASUU now asked the Federal Government to develop the universities annually, and it shouldn’t be part of Federal budget and not part of Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, and that the Federal Government should allocate N400 billion for capital projects in the universities. This is not realistic, because we have Polytechnics and colleges of education”. “Most universities haven’t accessed their 2012 intervention funds, so there are still funds for them.” On earned allowances he said, “The N30billion was for a start and then if it is not enough, we would find a way to pay ASUU.” In his contribution, the Minister of Labour, Mr. Wogu said, discussion with ASUU was still ongoing, and that dialogue has not broken down yet. “One thing that is clear is that the Federal Government has started implementing the 2009 agreement, so if there are grey areas, the appropriate thing to do is to settle it. The thing is that those grey areas cannot be settled when ASUU is on strike, the grey areas can still be settled if they go back to the classrooms. I think the issue is going back to the classrooms, intimidation would not resolve it, but for all hands to be on deck to resolve it. “We have got to a stage where even ASUU has realised that government has done enough towards the implementation of the 2009 agreement.” About the proposed sympathy strike of NUT, he said, “I want to appeal to you to call off the proposed threat of strike. We just want to reassure that Federal Government would soon resolve the ASUU strike. Do not compound what is on ground, but rather suggest solution to the government on how to end the strike.” In his response, the President of Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, Comrade Alogba Olukoya, said the union was not happy at the state of education in the country.” |

ASUU STRIKE: Dead hope as NASUU, SSANU others join strike As if the current imbroglio between the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal government is not enough; the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and Non-Academic Staff Union Of Universities (NASUU) have declared an indefinite strike action over two months’ of unpaid salaries. In an interview according to Channels Television, the SSANU Public Relations officer in Bayero University Kano (BUK), Nura Garba says the federal government has not paid their August and September salaries, the situation which the union says has caused progressive hardship among its members. The union through its Public Relations Officer SSNU, BUK chapter, Nura Garba demanded that its members’ two month salaries be paid and that the federal government should stop punishing them with ASUU. For over three months, the university lecturers have shunned lectures. With the joining of the strike by other affiliate arms, our universities are as good as dead; as there have been total collapse of system in all varsities across the nation. |

Here is a poem i wrote when i was 13 - HEAVEN WHAT A PLACE TO BE.... I SING GLEEFULLY FOR MY TREASURES I WILL SEE......... ......Recently i lost a friend named Lekan, we grew up together, wrote unaab's postutme last year, we didn't gain admission, but he got admitted into an ogun state polytechnic, he had such an uplifting smile, he was sponsoring himself in school, very independent, taught me to not put my trust in man, there where wealthy ppl in his family, but they just wouldn't help, despite all this Lekan strived on, he didnt get discouraged, he did catering stuffs, decoration, cakes, consultation, he was really talented in using his hands to create beautiful things that amazed people greatly.. There was a day we spoke about our dreams, and he told me he really wanted his business to expand so he could reach out to more people... Most importantly, he feared God, we sang together in Ressurection band (a group of talented musicians that minister to ppl), and i was always happy anytime i had a chance to be with ore mi Lekan...Unfortunately, he died a few days back, i was shocked when i heard the news and immediately rushed to his house, i thought i was dreaming cause we spoke on phone not quite long...he was very ill and couldn't make it, but i was told that he made some prayers in pain before he left.....Tears rolled down my eyes when i saw my friend's coffin, i thought about his dreams...but..hmmmm.....what can we do? What are we pursuing in this world that makes us forget the one who created this WORLD? Where does our heart lies? What is the gain in trying to please our peers and others? My Lekan has gone, but his trust in God till the end has taught me too to trust God....R.I.P brotherly |

Baraje-led PDP describes Wike a misfit as Nigeria’s Education Minister The Baraje-led PDP accused Mr. Wike of incompetence. The Abubakar Baraje-led Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, faction has described the Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, as a ‘traitor and a misfit’ while reacting to a statement it said was credited to Mr. Wike. The minister had allegedly accused the Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, of being behind the prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. A statement by the spokesperson of the PDP faction, Chukwuemeka Eze, on Tuesday in Abuja said the faction would have “ordinarily ignored Wike’s outburst as the ranting of a confused and clueless minister” adding however, that it decided to respond “so as to set the record straight”. Mr. Wike, who spoke via the Secretary-General of the Grassroots Development Initiative, GDI, Samuel Nwanosike, Monday, in Port Harcourt was quoted as saying Mr. Amaechi and the new PDP were behind the prolonged strike by university lecturers across the country. Mr. Eze however, challenged the Minister to produce evidence to back up his allegation or ‘bury his head in shame forever’. “If we may ask, was it Governor Amaechi or any other of our members that negotiated on behalf of the Federal Government in 2009 when it reached the agreement with ASUU, which it has inexplicably refused to honour, thus laying the foundation for this lingering strike that has mortgaged the future of innocent Nigerian youths? And did any member of New PDP negotiate on the part of ASUU during the recently deadlocked talks with the FG over the strike?” Mr. Eze said. He also said it was unfortunate that instead of committing himself to finding a solution to the crippling strike, Mr. Wike has chosen to ‘trivialize’ the issue and to ridicule himself. “Unfortunately, it is the actions and utterances of court jesters like Wike that have made perceptive Nigerians to describe the Goodluck Jonathan administration as a kindergarten government,” he added. Mr. Eze stated that the faction had earlier ordered her members to fast and pray for the end to the unfortunate strike action for over a week and had even set up a committee under the chairmanship of Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State to proffer solutions on how to resolve the strike. He disparaged the Education Minister saying the faction was at a loss as to how a “supposedly serious government should continue to retain such an incompetent and unserious mind as a Minister of the very strategic Ministry of Education in a country teeming with accomplished educationists and administrators if not for undemocratic motor-park democracy he specializes on”. “In any case, we are not overly surprised by Wike’s tirade because a man who could engineer the stoning of visiting State Governors from other parts of the country without caring a hoot about the consequences is capable of saying or doing anything, no matter how outrageous “Let us reiterate that should he ever make another derogatory statement about the Baraje led PDP, we will teach him some lessons on how to talk as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and he should note that New PDP is not Rivers State where he has because of his greed messed up governance,” Mr. Eze said. |

UI breaches ASUU strike, conducts examinations At the University of Ibadan, the strike action by by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, which began Monday 1 July has generated some bad blood between ASUU and some sections of the university, with breaches being committed. For instance, ASUU was at loggerheads with the Faculty of Law for organizing examination for their final year students in order to ensure that they do not miss going to Law School this year. The examination which took place at Dominican Institute, Samonda area of Ibadan, outside the university campus was said to have been invigilated by some of the parents of the graduating students. It was alleged that the faculty took the step because some of the candidates were said to be children of some deans in the university and prominent Nigerians, including Senator Iyiola Omisore. Getting wind of what was believed to have been an illegal examination, the magazine learnt that ASUU members went to the venue to challenge the conduct of the examination but were harassed and assaulted. To prevent a breakdown of law and order, the ASUU members left with a promise that appropriate action would be taken once the strike is over. A member of ASUU described the examination as illegal. P.M.NEWS also learnt authoritatively that some faculties also held examinations for their post graduate students while projects supervisions never stopped. In another development, the UI authorities also sidetracked the striking academic staff and conducted the post UTME examination for incoming candidates into the university on Saturday September 28 2013. The exercise which was considered successful was lauded by parents of the affected candidates including Mr. Olaitan Oladepo, and Mrs. Olaoluwa Mary and the candidates have already seen their results. But adversely affected are the students of Distance Learning Centre, DLC, of the university which has previously lost a session due to the 2009 strike action of the academic staff. Failure of the DLC students to write any examination this year would result into them losing two academic sessions: 2011/2012 and 2012/2013. The students who had started writing their examination for 2011/2012 academic session were forced to stop. The centre that ought to have admitted new students for 2013/2014 session could not do so as a result of the strike. “There is no facility for us. There are no classrooms for us. We have to wait for the regular students to finish their academic programmes before we can be attended to and that is why our interactive session and examination always hold when regular students are on holiday. When the strike is call off, they will neglect us and concentrate on the regular students and before you know it, they have regularized for them and who knows the numbers of years we will lose before we finish our programmes”, a DLC student said. Dr. Segun Ajiboye: promises action against UI Law Faculty Reacting to the development, ASUU chairman, UI chapter, Dr. Segun Ajiboye said the Law Faculty ought to have waited for the end of the strike before conducting the examination. “Why is the faculty in a hurry especially when ASUU is on strike? Our union has a position for punishing erring members and this will be appropriately applied at the end of this struggle. We take it as one of the skirmishes around during struggle and it will be dealt with appropriately when this struggle is over”. On the post UTME, the union leader saw no sense in conducting the examination for prospective candidates when the system is yet to adequately take care of its current students. “This is part of the anomalies we are talking about in Nigeria. JAMB gave directive to the VC, go and bring the list of admitted students or you forfeit admission. It is an anomaly and that is why we want the law that established JAMB to be reviewed so that it will just serve as clearing house and it will not be a body giving directives. You can’t take care of the students you have and you are bringing another one. What is this madness all about?” Justifying the union’s position on DLC, he assured, “But let our students know that at the appropriate time when this strike is over, they will be taught their regular courses and they will graduate as at when due. We can assure them that our union is a responsible union, and we will make sure that their interest is adequately taken care of. DLC should not panic. Very soon the struggle will be over and we can guarantee our students, regular and DLC, that their interests will be well protected and they will graduate as at when due”. |

President Goodluck Jonathan promised yesterday to end the doctors’ and university teachers’ strike. The teachers’ is over 90 days. Members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) are also on strike. The professionals are blaming the government for failing to meet up with the agreement reached with them. Jonathan promised to end the strike when he received the leaders of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), led by its President, Dr. Osahon Enabulele. Presidential spokesman Dr. Reuben Abati, in a statement on the meeting which reporters were prevented from covering, said the President promised to do his all to resolve all issues that caused disputes. He said the government attached great importance to the medical and educational sectors. He said: “I believe that we must manage both sectors in such a way that nobody engaged in them will think of going on strike again. “We will continue to proactively evolve measures that will help us to permanently overcome the problems that lead to strikes by health and education professionals,” he added. To facilitate rapid establishment of more centres of medical excellence in the country, President Jonathan pledged that the Federal Government would fully explore the option of creating a special intervention fund. According to him, the recommendation of a special fund that will give low interest loans for the establishment of state-of-the-art medical facilities is a creative idea that will receive appropriate consideration from the government. He said: “We are committed to working with professionals and the private sector to establish better medical facilities in the country and reduce the number of Nigerians who have to go abroad annually for medical reasons.” Jonathan also assured the doctors that his administration would create the right conditions to enable doctors to stay at home and avail Nigerians of their acknowledged skills and expertise instead of migrating to other countries. He said his administration was determined to correct the anomaly of Nigeria being so strong in human capacity in medicine, with about 25,000 Nigerian medical consultants currently practising in the United States , as confirmed to him by President Barack Obama; and yet being unable to treat many of its sick people in its own hospitals. Jonathan said: “There is clearly a missing link somewhere and we will do everything possible to fix it. We will continue to work with professional bodies and all stakeholders to come up with more policies and actions that will help us overcome current challenges in our medical sector. “We will work with the National Assembly to ensure the quick passage of the National Health Bill. We will take prompt action to reconstitute the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. We will also consider recommendations for the establishment of the Office of Surgeon-General of the Federation.” “I believe that we must always do what is best for our country. We will review all the other issues you have raised and act accordingly. When things are done properly, issues of welfare and remuneration in the health sector will disappear,” the President said. Dr. Enabulele assured President Jonathan of NMA’s support for his administration’s agenda. He called for urgent reconstitution of the main regulatory body in the health sector, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria which was dissolved in 2011. The NMA President also called for faster action on the passage of the National Health Bill and other issues related to the creation of a more conducive operating environment for doctors and other healthcare professionals such as remuneration, welfare and training. The President was decorated with the emblem of the NMA by Prof. Umaru Shehu. The NMA delegation included the Emir of Tsonga, Dr. Haliru Yahaya, the NMA Second Vice-President, Dr. Uche Ojinmah and the NMA Secretary-General, Dr. Akpufuoma Pemu. |

AhA Uniabj!!!...I applied 4 Uniabj in the year 2011, i scored 259 and my O'level result is okay...I was so confident that i will be admitted into the school but guess what when the list(s) came out, most of those admitted were those that scored 200-220,180-190 suprisingly students that scored 170 were also admitted and they were admitted into PROFESSIONAL COURSES like LAW,MEDICINE etc..while those that truly deserved the admission were left out...Once again i scored 259. Whats my point?? My point is, if you Want a good school that is MODERATELY fair apply to schools with proven credibility I'e Unical,Uyo,Jos,Port,Uniben,OAU,Ilorin etc there are many of them....But DO NOT apply To UNIABJ.. UNIABJ will only waste your time...#i stand to be corrected#. |

Bashimi: Any news about registration plsyou need academic staffs to help you out with your course registration. unfortunately, they are the ones on strike. so I guess registration will have to wait until after ASUU strike. mean while other administrative stuffs such as; submission of diploma forms, pgd forms, NYSC mobilization is still going on... to be frank, the only set of people who are consistently in school are the Administrative staffs, SSANU, NASU, final year students, diploma students..... For fresh students, you'll have to wait till after the ASUU strike. |
