Driver Sent To Prison For Blocking Fashola’s Convoy by blacksta(m): 4:57pm On May 24, 2012
For allegedly blocking the Lekki-Epe Expressway with a truck at Ilasan area of Lekki, Eti- Osa, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, thereby causing obstruction to the convoy of Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, on Tuesday, a driver, Mr. David Abiodun, 31, has been arrested by the police at Ilasan Division.

He was arraigned Wednesday before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, on a five-count charge of dangerous and reckless driving without regard to other road users and causing obstruction to the Lagos State governor’s convoy.

The police stated in the charge sheet that the accused was arrested when he used his Mack truck with registration number XY 33 GGE to block the entire lane on the Lekki-Epe Expressway for unjustifiable reasons and in the process prevented the Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola and his convoy from having easy passage to their destination.

During interogation, it was alleged that Abiodun could not give satisfactory reasons on why he blocked the road.

He could not also produce his driver’s licence and the vehicle’s particulars on demand.

The offences, the police prosecutor, Inspector Clifford Ogu said, contravened Sections 28(i), 39(3) of the Traffic Act 548, 36 (P), 44 (1) Cap. 172, Vol. 7 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State of Nigeria and Section 126 (1) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and the presiding magistrate, Mrs. Famobiwo, granted him bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum who must produce evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government and they must also be resident in the state.

She adjourned the matter till 6 June, 2012 for mention.

The defendant was moved to Ikoyi Prison when he could not perfect his bail conditions

Fashola is working hard to spoil his good name. First doctors, now this?
I recall people being exercised, cos a man that drove out of a side street at fierce speed and willfully rammed his car into GEJ's convoy was charged to court (even though he is the President, compared to a mere governor).

Very good work by BRF

It is a common occurrence in Lagos when some mumu would just block the road all in the name of "no law" causing hours of traffic.

Let assume there is a SOS patient that is been taking to hospital and not fashola that is coming, this crazy driver would have let em die for blocking the road for no reason. Any sane person will not see anything bad in what they do to the driver

yes it's wrong to block the road and obstruct people's movements, but why is it that the offenders only get punished if it has to do with a big man? undecided

What killed the late da-grin... Traffic regulations should be obeyed. What if he was been chased or the blockage was part of the assassination plot! A lesson to all MACK drivers... Leadership by example.

He obstructed traffic and could not show his driver's license and particulars. People get arrested for this everyday, although it doesn't make headlines.

The police prosecuted him and the bail conditions were lenient though. Also the governor is responsible for the law and order of the state, and should tAke the regular and necessary steps to maintain it. At least today wasn't the driver's day.

In a civilized society, no sane human being will obstruct an expressway with a vehicle, not to even talk of a trailer and a driver without driver’s licence and vehicle’s particulars, i dont also think any sane human being should defend this useless driver, it doesn't matters if its Fashola or not, he is the chief security officer of the state, if he didn't arrest this rogue driver and charge him to court, who will, is it you and I, shouting at him to remove his brakeless trailer....come on guys...lets call a spade a spade..countless souls have been lost due to reckless driving and indiscriminate parking of this unchecked trailer drivers.

Oh gimme a freaking break!!!

Reporters and sensationalism, wording the story like it is because he blocked Fashola's convoy he got arrested. Dude obviously got arrested because he was BREAKING THE LAW!!

Helloooo, he was driving dangerously and recklessly. He also had no DL on him for goodness sake.

In a civilized country he would find his nasty behind in jail so fast he won't know what hit him. Unfortunately, we don't have cops to help enforce traffic laws, thank goodness he did it in the presence of someone who could do something about it.

We all complain about people not obeying laws in Naija because they know they can get away with anything. . .we finally have someone who is being made to face the consequences of his reckless action and everyone is all up in arms about it. How does that work. . .do we want law and order or do we want a free for all, anything goes society? Make up your minds people!!!!

By the way, Fashola obviously wasn't going about with the same bells and whistles and fanfare like his counterparts do or the reckless driver would have been alerted long enough to get out of the way. Nope Fashola was going about his business like an ordinary citizen, experienceing what the average Nigerian goes through every day on the road and we wanna crucify him for that??

Abegi!!

I dont think it's an abuse of office because the trailer must have caused a serious hold-up and fashola as the governor of the state only provides a good reason for this guy to be prosecuted. Why did he intentionally block the road ?
