naptu2: State House Ribadu Road used to be the official residence of the minister of defence (Mallam Ribadu). It is beside the Federal Guards (Dodan) Barracks.

However, General Gowon felt that State House Marina was not safe/did not offer enough security (there were rumours that Major General Ironsi used to cross the Marina and sleep aboard a navy gunboat every night). He therefore mandated Joseph Garba to find a suitable residence for the Head of State/Supreme Commander.

Joe Garba decided that State House Ribadu Road would be a suitable residence. Parts of Ribadu Road were blocked off (Ribadu Road used to link Awolowo Road to Ikoyi Road) and the compound expanded. The name was changed to State House Dodan Barracks (although it is not located in Dodan Barracks).

Unlike State House Marina, which is a mansion, Dodan Barracks is a complex that contains the president's residence, office block, council chambers, press centre, etc.

Dodan is the name of a place in Burma where Nigerian soldiers died while making a last stand.

You seem to be a truly learned person with insight into details of Nigerian history.I may one day need your input in putting together the history of modern Nigeria.

My fellow citizen, the level of awareness of our rights is very low in this country.

Do you know why the police and politicians are always afriad of dealing with lawyers? lawyers do not have guns to fight the police with, but they know thier rights and have a strong union that will fight for its members.

Nigerian politicians and the police trample on our rights because they know most of us do not know our rights and our fellow citizens will not fight for us when our rights are trampled on.

good talk !

it is part of our individual obligations and civic duty to know and understand the nigerian constitution. i have promoted this idea here several times but you can take the horse to the river, cannot force it to drink though.

here again is the info. please, go here and download this app to your phone. once a day go in and read and familiarise with the provisions. they have apps suitable for different kind of operating system. i will share with mods and see if they can have a page or a channell here for the constitution as well.

Video of US President Jimmy Carter's visit to Dodan Barracks. In this video you'll get a good view of State House Ribadu Road (aka Dodan Barracks).

http://www.facebook.com/video/embed?video_id=10200843820721533

The first visit of a US president to Sub-Saharan Africa.

The video opens with a panoramic view of the grounds of State House Ribadu Road (aka Dodan Barracks) and the massed ranks of officers and men of the Brigade of Guards. You can see the real Dodan (army) Barracks in the distance (brown and white buildings).

The video shows President Carter arriving Dodan Barracks for the welcoming ceremonies.
Riding in the limousine with President and Mrs. Carter is General Joseph Garba. At that time, Joseph Garba was Nigeria’s foreign minister. After retiring from the army, General Garba would go on to serve as Nigeria’s representative at the United Nations. He served as President of the UN General Assembly in 1990.

General Garba previously served as Commander of the Brigade of Guards when General Gowon was Head of State.

President Carter is received by Lt Gen Obasanjo and introduced to Nigerian officials.

The two heads of state receive the 21 gun salute and the national salute (Star Spangled Banner and Arise O’ Compatriots). A line of Nigerian officials is shown during the rendition of the anthems. The officials include Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua (Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters), Lt Gen T.Y Danjuma (Chief of Army Staff), Vice Admiral Michael Adelanwa (Chief of Naval Staff), Air Vice Marshall John Yisa Doko (Chief of Air Staff) and Alhaji Muhammed Dikko Yusuf (Inspector General of Police).

President Carter, accompanied by his (US) ADC and the parade commander, inspects the troops.

Short clips of speeches by President Carter and Lt Gen Obasanjo.

There is then a very brief shot of the Council Chamber at State House Ribadu Road.

The US President is then shown at the Cenotaph at Tafawa Balewa Square. The guards play the Last Post and the President lays a wreath at the tomb of The Unknown Soldier.

Finally, there is a shot of Marina. President Carter stayed at State House Marina during his visit. It’s an interesting shot because you can see Marina before the Outer Ring Road was built. This was back when Marina had a sandy beach, instead of the concrete structures that are there at the moment. This was even before NECOM House (Net Building) was built.

So... the original founders of Nigeria thought it appropriate to have a simple well guarded house the appeared accessible to the people, but once the shenenigans of coup plots and corruption started, the leaders had to run away and hide from the people.

Im not putting words in your mouth...just reflecting on you informative post. Thanks for the information I knew about the state house marina, but thought it was for the premier of the south western region.

Actually the base of the Premier should be in Ibadan and not Lagos. Lagos was the Federal Capital, while Ibadan was the Headquarters of the then Western Region Government.

A relatively recent picture of State House, Marina, Lagos. The picture was probably taken from Necom House.

You can see the mansion (pink) with the flag of the Commander In Chief Of The Armed Forces flying just below the National Flag on the roof of the building. Beside the mansion is the administrative building and behind the administrative building (not shown in the picture) is St Saviour's Anglican Church, which used to be the State House chapel during colonial times.

Beyond State House Marina is Lagos House Marina.

Re: Aso Rock Belongs To Nigerians...in A Democracy We Have No Pictures? by naptu2: 8:17pm On Aug 31, 2014
This is Lagos House, Marina (residence of the Lagos State Governor). The tall building that you can see is Necom House (a.k.a Net Building, or Nitel Building). It was the tallest building in West Africa when it was built in 1978.

State House, Marina is between Lagos House and Necom House. I believe that the picture in the previous post was taken from Necom House.
