If some people here cannot see that this is beyond wages only but a deliberate attempt by the government to stylishly break the contract she signed with the doctors then you are free to bring sick people to Oyo state, our governor brings qualified doctors to town every quater for one week.

Boo hoo like I have been crying since we were issued the sack letters. I know I will be cussed out for saying so but personally I am annoyed that Tinubu came to meddle as usual. I was actually enjoying the unpaid vacation. Last year I worked for at least 3 weeks of my annual leave last year because the unit was short staffed, it was only when I travelled out of the country I could relax because nobody could reach me . This period of sack has been the closest thing I have had to a full leave in some years where I can sit in my house ignore phone calls if I dont know the number and generally think of myself and my life. Without worrying about one patient or the other.

i feel you on the ignoring unknown numbers that call. Its such a relief.

. . . the CONMESS will be paid in full. Either now or in the near future.

It’s a pity that some people were taken in by the ridiculous propaganda of the LSG that the Doctors struggled to get re-instated. They certainly did NOT!

It was a foregone conclusion that ALL of them would have been re-instated, seeing that in this particular face-off, the Doctors ALWAYS held the upper hand . . . and they knew it.

Below is one of the first comments I made regarding this whole drama when it had only started . . . and I was spot on!

beneli: The scenario which is most likely to unfold over the next few days - or weeks - is that the sacked Doctors will all be recalled to their old jobs . . . that’s if Governor Fashola is as smart as people on hear make him out to be.

If this wasn’t so life threatening, I would have been laughing out loud at this moment! The reality on ground however, is that no matter how much we’d want to disparage the Doctors, NO state in Nigeria can afford to sack its Doctors, not when among those sacked are 2 US-trained brain surgeons, in a country where there are no more than 5! I suspect that amongst those sacked would also be many experienced Surgeons, Paediatricians, O&G specialists . . . and yes, even Psychiatrists! .

The cost of this misadventure is difficult to quantify but . . . let me state with a lot of confidence and possibly a bit of arrogance . . . I am sure that the costs will far outweigh any ‘superficial’ political short-term gains that our esteemed Governor Fashola thinks that he is making. I say ‘political’ because this decision is clearly not well thought through – there is no gain that can be made from sacking Doctors in a country where there is only 1 Doctor to every 4000 patients . . . especially when the only thing the Doctors are asking for is for the government to fulfil its part of an agreement!

What some supporters of this decision seem not to immediately realise is that those, employed to ‘replace’ the sacked Doctors are not going to be of the same level of experience or competence - a Consultant who is not already in government employment would most likely not be applying for these vacant posts, because the government will NOT be able to pay him even half of what he is used to earning! The gullible public should not be hoodwinked by the media into thinking that the government is doing the right thing. It isn’t . . .

The right thing to do is NOT to renege on what has already been agreed on. The right thing for the government to do is to go into a negotiation mode, if it thinks that it cannot fulfil its part of the agreement . . .

You see, in spite of whatever hypocrite’s oath that Doctors are supposed to have made at the point of graduation, which some erroneously misconstrue as a pledge to a life of poverty, Doctors are actually flesh and blood human beings. And like all flesh and blood humans . . . who are intelligent . . . they too have the inner dialogue that some also refer to as a conscience, so will submit to reason when it is presented to them without any threats! And because they are humans, they too need to eat, pay rent and phuck like everyone else . . . and none of these things are gratis . . .

To cut a long story short, if the sacked Doctors are not recalled to their old jobs then the Health sector in Lagos is going to be more phucked than it already is.

And in case I missed the most important point of this my Friday afternoon drivel, the sacked Doctors are not the ones who are going to come out of this whole drama worse off . . .

You see, those who think that, in a 3rd world country whose average IQ has been estimated to hover around an uninspiring 63 - in which the Doctor–patient ratio is on par with countries like Sudan - the Doctors are dispensable, are having a laugh . . . and one that’s at the expense of a terribly insipid joke!

The LSG should quit this offensive and quite frankly, rancid politicking already, and apologise to Lagosians. And then apologise to the Doctors that it betrayed. It was not in the least sophisticated to let down the poor and vulnerable people who mandated it to provide them access to a reasonable quality of healthcare. And then turn around to make out that those it reneged in its agreement with are the culprits.

It was in bad taste to have gone down this route. And only the ignorant are fooled . . .

Re: Lagos State Recalls All Sacked Doctors by EkoIle1: 10:35pm On May 31, 2012
Let's take it a step at a time.

The state said they are paying conmess fully and they published what they are paying the doctors.

The state said they didn't sign anything with the doctors

The question now is.

Why are the doctors not showing Lagosians the copy of the agreement the state signed with them?

If the state claimed that they are paying conmess and published what they are paying the doctors, why are the doctors not showing Lagosians what the state is actually paying them if the state was lying?

The doctors are obviously dishonest greedy lots.

Evil Brain: This is not enough. The government should pay the doctors the full amount that was agreed and not a penny less. They shouldn't think that just because they have backed down a little that the doctors will forget the issue that started the whole problem.

If the governmnt tries to remove even 1 kobo from a doctor's hard earned salary, they will face the fight of their lives. They may be able to get away with this type of nonsense with the poor masses who don't know their rights, but doctors are cut from a different cloth.

I will say I was disappointed at some people's comments by berating Gov. Fashola.

Were we not all in this country, in January 2012, when President GEJ, despite unanimous calls and protest by all Nigerians, was briming with fire that he was not going to revert back his decision on the fuel price increament? Now, here is a gorvernment, that listened to the crys of its people and revert back its self, yet we are berating them.

Not holding brief for the doctors but:

1. Which mega city in the world can any masses-based government sack 788 doctors.
2. Where is integrity in openly refusing to honour VALID agreements.
3. Now you reinstate the hitherto sacked doctors, what about the 300, will they still be in employment?
4. If no that means another 300 will be out of jobs
5. If yes what will be their salary structure as compared to the reinstated colleagues?
6. Are doctors really responsible for the medical security of her citizens or the government, if the doctors are seen as irresponsible for going on frequent strikes what about their employer?

We must look beyond subjectivity and be objective to fully understand the social cost of this whole situation. Every employee is responsible to his employer and vis versa. Its just a shame that both parties here let things deteriorate to the unnecessary loss of life.

Where are the so called valid agreements? Can you or the doctors show us a copy

3. Now you reinstate the hitherto sacked doctors, what about the 300, will they still be in employment?

They were hired under a different contract and they were never permanent workders

4. If no that means another 300 will be out of jobs

You are jumping the gun. They were hired under a different contract and the terms of their contracts is not strange to them

@Eko ile thanks for your answers. However:
Will you call 788 doctors dispensible in a system where the ratio is more than 1:10,000
Are the doctors calling for a present review of their remuneration or an honouring of a previous agreement?
Would sane doctors be agitating for the implementation of an oral agreement?
What's the wisdom of sacking 788 grossly inadequate full time doctors (strictly in terms of doctor to patients ratio) and employing 300 part time doctors?
So you feel the 300 doctors conditions of service which was tailored to favour the employers will hold water when both sets of doctors are in public service?

I'm none partisan or tribalistic. I feel the LASG wanting to salvage an already avoidably bad situation erred in principle. They are to create employment and not unemployment.

I don't feel it's enough to claim 'all the sacked Doctors' have all been recalled.
Somebody has to be held responsible for this stupid act of treachery. CRIME AGAINST THE STATE OF LAGOS!
Medical profession is a massive institution that every government places a
premium on and does allocate massive human and material resources towards.
The Medical core is the backbone of a society.

If somebody has destroyed an establishment that took many many years to get to the
level it was prior to the 'sack' then that person must be sacked!

Raise your hand: who sacked the doctors

Where are the opposition parties in Lagos state Come in and take over!
Re: Lagos State Recalls All Sacked Doctors by mikeapollo: 12:54am On Jun 01, 2012
It is very clear now that Fashola is incompetent, insensitive and not fit for governor! Was he not the person who said he does not have the powers to sack or recall the doctors, thereby prolonging the crises and making more people to die in the hospitals?
So Tinubu's voice is more important to Fashola than the lives of hundreds of poor Lagosians that were dying in the hospitals?
We are now seeing the arrogant and dictaorial nature of Fashola. He was only pretending in his first 2 years when he used the accumulated savings from the local govt funds seized by the FG to do a few projects in Lagos. I make bold to say he has not done anything new since 2009 when they started planning for his 2011 elections.

For those who were blindly praising Fashola, I have always been saying that Tinubu is far better than Fashola!

1.Doctors never went on strike in Tinubu's 8 years. Infact, he brought in experienced doctors from abroad. But Fashola deployed armed policemen to drive doctors away from their offices/quaarters and even called them 'irresponsible'! These are doctors some of who started practising before Fashola became a lawyer!
2.LASU has witnessed its worst crises under Fashola
3.Tinubu built many roads but never installed tollgates to extort money from Lagosians.
Fashola deployed armed policemen to beat/attack unarmed protesters in a peaceful march.
4.Tinubu negotiated with Lagos State workers, teachers etc and improved their packages
5.Tinubu built low cost housing estates even in his first term.....Fashola has NOT built a SINGLE low cost house in 5 years, and he does not have any plans to build!
6. Tinubu built stalls for market women.....but Fashola has decided to defraud the Yaba market women by converting their spaces to build a shopping mall for the elites and cronies of his govt.
7.Tinubu did all the work that created the agencies that are generating money for LASG...e.g LASTMA, LASAA,BRT etc. Now, Fashola is using them mostly to terrorise the people and extort money. He has increased LASU fees, Land Use Charge etc with little or nothing to show.

I said it before.....people should support the doctors to check the arbitrariness of this Fashola and I welcome the threat by NUPENG to join the strike.

With this development, it is clear Fashola does not know how to manage the affairs of a state. Doctors, Teachers and Farmers are the most important people, as far as am concerned. But everything we do is dependent on good-health...so the doctors become paramount. To wake up and sack 788 doctors in a day is just MADNESS and STUPIDITY!

I know he must be hiding his face in shame now..The doctors must go ahead and get what they want!

Again, no human is indispensable ans above the law. It doesn't matter who you are in any society, you still have to obey the law just kike every other citizen. You can not keep going on rampage over everything just because you are a doctor.

Are the doctors calling for a present review of their remuneration or an honouring of a previous agreement?

The state said they are paying conmess and they have published what they are payig the doctors, it's now up to the doctors to prove the state wrong in front of Lagosians. Secondly, the state said they did not sign anything with the doctros so let the doctors show Lagosians the copy of the said agreement they singed with the state.

Would sane doctors be agitating for the implementation of an oral agreement?

I don't know, but they can show us the copy of that agreement.

What's the wisdom of sacking 788 grossly inadequate full time doctors (strictly in terms of doctor to patients ratio) and employing 300 part time doctors?

The wisdom is to prevent lawlessness and anarchy within the civil service. The doctors are employees of the state and they still have to abide by the rules governing their employment just like the messenger. You also have to recognize that you have an employer and when that employer sends you a query, you have to answer instead of disobeying your employer by telling your employer to Bleep off. That was very rude and unprofessional. Just imagine all the state workers with similar attitude. The state would be ungovernable with break down of law and order.

So you feel the 300 doctors conditions of service which was tailored to favour the employers will hold water when both sets of doctors are in public service?

People sign contracts for a reason

I'm none partisan or tribalistic. I feel the LASG wanting to salvage an already avoidably bad situation erred in principle. They are to create employment and not unemployment.

It is not the state's job to create jobs, but they can create the environment for jobs to flourish. No responsible government allows the employees to order the government around, to dictate to the government what they want when ever they feel like. If you run your own company like that by letting your employees tell you what to do everyday or they strike, you will fire them. Instead of causing problems everyday because of money, why not go and look for another employer? Must you work for the Lagos state government?

It is quite sad when folks make statements that betray their ignorance.British doctors have given notice of a strike action because of perceived unjust pension deductions. The Lagos state government should be held responsible for all the casualties of the strike because it reneged on an agreement its officials and Tinubu signed, refused all entreaties from the doctors to implement the terms of the agreement and later resorted to strong arm tactics. It is even sadder that lagosians remained passive while the government used them as pawns in their immoral and unjust campaign against the doctors.anyway,my grouse is with Tinubu and not the lackey doing his biddings in Alausa.Tinubu has a history of friction with workers, just that now,he bit more than his fill by sacking the doctors.I hope he has a moment of sober reflection as he eats his humble pie .

Ask the UK drs that are starting theirs now if they should have been drs at all.
Inhuman? Who determines what is inhuman? Is it the society that doesn't appreciate the extra length and sacrifice their drs in public service go to make sure they are healthy?
a dr friend was busy in that same hospital where they were being sacked while his pregnant wife was being operated on in another hospital in town. He saw his wife 36 hours after her surgery- they lived in the same house oh. It nearly led to the crash of their home.
What selflessness can be greater than this?
Add that to poor pay! Double tragedy, it is called.

Another one lost his 3month old baby to diarrhoea just because he could not pick his call when his wife was calling to inform him their daughter was going down!
Ask where he was? He was on 48 hours straight call in the maternity bringing forth other people's babies .
How bitter could he be if his efforts, pains and sufferings are not being appreciated by the same people he is losing his own life to?
He will abandon them, face his own life. When he's got a life, he will come back but now bearing in mind who he should really sacrifice for.

Martin Luther Jr wrote- "In the end when the fight is over, we will remember not
the words of our enemies, but the
silence of our friends.".
BFF and the politicians never suffered a bit. Some were flown out just to have their hypertension checked at the expense of the masses.
Who lost? We, the citizens of Lagos; who lost relatives? We.
Just as the drs signed to elevate above all the life of their patients, so did BRF swear to protect at all cost, the lives of the populace of Lagos state.

CuteTj: I really admire Fashola's intelligence. I knew he was going to recall them. Im sure they will never repeat what they did. It will teach other employees never to hold their employers to ransome all in the name of fighting for your rights. If you are not satisfied with your employer's terms, kindly QUIT! Don't forget that there are people that will gladly accept your job for even half of what you are paid.

Maybe we should all have called it quit instead of fighting for the 18 k minimum wage!
Are you aware he will still pay them for all the period they didn't work? Are you aware that all the lost lives cannot never be recalled back? Babies who have been rendered motherless will never in this world have another mother?
Fashola is indeed intelligent. Issue of labour groups and their employers is a give and take thing.

The government signed an agreement in nov 2009 by the HOS and this was buttressed by another signed in 2011 march by tinubu, acn party chief and the commisioner of health on behalf of the government......those two papers have been presented on numerous tv programmes and is currently being reviewed by the industrial court
If you havent seen them then you havent been paying attention
Now the doctores are back to being striking doctors, i hope they do not back down till they get. What was agreed
I can see the government in an attempt to RENEGE yet again is putting the sack as the issue and not the dishonored agreement
A dishonorable government cannot last long. Fashola loyalist......following a person without watching his actions and telling him when he is wrong is like being a zombie. If you raise a child withouit honesty and critism, you will have an adult that is a problem to you
