I think this is a general issue with the curve 4, once used for pinging or calls for long periods, it tends to hot up !!!

try switching to egbe or go outside where the network bar is full

U could try putting it in a bucket of water while pinging.

It's a general issue.
Solution:
Upgrade to OS 7.1.
Maintain "2g&3g" only option or "2g", turning on "3g" only drags the network which makes the phone get hots and also drains the better quickly.

Dont own a blackberry but i noticed most of the people who do talk about battery issues.
Tried this on a friends phone before he left for work, when he came home, he still had 80%.

1. Check that your wifi is switched off.

2. Switch you phone network to 2G&3G.

3. Close apps that run in the background, by holding your menu button and selecting them one by one and closing them.

4. Facebook,twitter and anyother social media you dont check every minute. Check their options and reduce the update intervals to an hour.

5. Reduce your screen brightness to 10% indoors and phone volume to halp.

6.Use for a day and check how long the phones battery will last you.

What to do -- remove phone from rubber skin if you use any,this block the vents trapping in heat,--try to limit or reduce browsing in areas with weak or poor signals.
Upgrading do not reduce heat. Upgrading will however give you radio and ability to use the phone to create your own wifi hotspot.

You will always have to charge at work. One full charge before leaving home in the morning will not carry you through the day. So always carry your charger with you especially if you do a lot online. I think our poor network contribute to battery depletion.

Mine did , also reduced the heating up , although I have other ways of managing the battery life and the heating up problem.

yes the upgrade does increase battery life am using touch 2 and ever since i upgraded to the latest os 7.1.0 my battery now last longer and the os supports java i can now open 2go immediately without that stupid and annoying icon rolling up and down
