For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had beenbetter for themnot to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. 2Pe 2:20 -22

The above scripture was written by the Apostle Peter and inspired by the Spirit of God. Peter -- the one who was eyewitness to the glory of the Risen Savior; the one who lived with Christ, saw His miracles and experienced the supernatural as He followed the Lamb. Yes, this Peter intimately knew the Lord Jesus Christ and labored tirelessly for the Kingdom of Heaven. The words he shares with us in his Epistles were received from the Savior and are recorded in the annals of time. We are to believe Peter’s words.

But, we are living in a day when much of Christianity has become apostate, denying not only Peter’s exhortations, but all the warnings throughout scripture. We have denominations, led by false teachers, that say Peter was wrong. They have created doctrines spurning the eyewitness accounts of the Apostle who warns us that a saved person can return to spiritual death. These false ministers, who have not the authority of Peter, think they know better. They claim a biblical permission, but in fact, have none. In this very chapter, Peter is warning us against these beguiling, dishonest soothsayers. He tells us that they would be AMONGST US, and indeed, they are in the churches with another message, another Jesus and another gospel.

Peter says that while they have escaped the corruptions of the world through the gospel, they become entangled again and overcome. But false teachers say this is impossible. They say we can never lose our salvation, let alone, be damned. They inspire a false confidence, a peace and safety spell to a people that follow their pernicious ways.

Let us pay very close attention to his words:

But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you,who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 2Pe 2:1-2

Note – their doctrines are DAMNABLE. This means that there is no salvation in their declarations. Their teachings lead to “swift destruction.” They gather sheep to the slaughter, those who are at ease in Zion and have slumbered for so long that they don’t even recognize the voice of the Shepherd as He calls to them.


Ministers of satan say it is impossible to turn from the Holy Commandment, and that our salvation is secure, no matter what we do. They resist the Spirit of God that warns us against sin and teach that sin is a natural state for man and one that can never be overcome. These deny the Lord that bought them, doing despite to the Spirit of Grace, and spit on the bloody body of Jesus who was manifested to take away our sins. They are, as Peter says, brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, who have forsaken the right way and are servants of corruption.


We can turn from the Holy Commandment

Remember Lot's wife. Luk 17:32

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 1Ti 4:1

Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them; Deu 11:16

For some are already turned aside after Satan. 1Ti 5:15

Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. Rev 2:5

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: Mat 25:41

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. 1Co 10:12

Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. Heb 3:12

We can depart from the Living God;
We can turn aside after satan;
We can depart from the faith;
We can be judged unworthy of eternal life.


Peter was correct and his words are recorded in scripture. His love for us was evidenced in his writings, warning us of such wolves. But false prophets have turned the grace of God into a license for sin, and their self-serving hearts really hate us. They are agents of satan sent to destroy our souls. Resist them. Go not after them. Mark them. Avoid them. They are wells without water, clouds carried with a tempest, to whom the midst of darkness is reserved forever. Their damnation slumbers not,

Let them alone.
