Enyeama still Nigeria No.1

Ex-Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu: has dismissed speculation of any plan by the technical crew to relegate Vincent Enyeama to the bench in the Nations Cup qualifier encounter against the Amavubi of Rwanda last weekend, following his blunder that denied Nigeria three points in Blantyre last weekend.

Fielding questions from Daily Sunsports in Calabar, Shorunmu said that rather than deteriorate, Enyeama had shown blistering improvement after overcoming the trauma of the Blantyre blunder, insisting that changing him would be counterproductive.

“If it is a rumour that we want to change Vincent, of course, it should be regarded so, because there is no such plan at all. Whatever has happened to Vincent was an unfortunate development. We still believe in him because he has done marvellously well for the Super Eagles.

“The mistake could happen to any other great goalkeeper. The truth is that he has learnt his lesson and his response to training after the unfortunate incident has been interesting and commendable. We, therefore, still believe he would always deliver,” he noted.

Asked why he has used only the French-based goalkeeper for all the three matches, the Nigerian former international, replied: “As I always say, the goalkeeping department is very sensitive. People should also know that it is always very difficult to drop a good goalkeeper, who is doing well even if he makes a mistake and risks relegation to the bench.

“We have to continue to give him that cofidence that he is still the best. We cannot drop Vincent for another goalkeeper just because of one mistake. The truth is that whoever assumes that position would almost start afresh. We need to be very careful,” he noted.
