as a philosophy student who had a critical and robust study of the difference between the SPIRIT and SOUL, i can tell you cartigorically that there are three main views as to understanding what these actually are. we have the African, western and Asian perspective. according to the African perspective, the spirit is an animating force which at death of the individual goes to the spirit world to join the ancestors while the soul reincarnates as a new person. for the Asians (budhism and the rest), the spirit is what give the body life i.e. it is the active element of an individual while the soul is in continous state of reincarnation until it gains enlightenment to join Lord Krisna in paradise. according to the western version, which is mainly as postulated by the ancient Greeks as well as the Holy Bible, the spirit give the body a life force while the soul is the part of the human entity that retains memory. hope i have help you a little |

talked on this somewhere, just lazy learning how to use the search engines to get my specific posts. Anyway then, i hope this would be read instead of drowned by the volume of posts due to frontpage disease. i want to mention from a biblical perspective please, ithink you are all entitled to your views. The Bible states/teaches that man can be divided into three parts/portions of spirit, soul and body. The first thing to establish is that in spiritual technicalities, there is a difference between the soul and the spirit. 1Thess 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Things are muddled up in us humans and we may not immediately or ever realise this truth, or have this knowledge. It's a fact and truth, though not necessarily a saving truth or fact. It's not given much discuss or exposition or prominence in the Bible. Infact the three terms are freely used interchangeably even in the Bible to refer to the man/being. It's important but not necessary, just like we don't all need to know about the pancreas, or endocrine system to live long on earth. Knowledge of this doesn't exactly/basically make you more spiritual or holier or give you more life than others who may not know. Anyways, the scriptures alone can effectively and efficiently divide spirit and soul. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Man was created as a being, now one can be naturally a soulish being or a physical/fleshly being. Jesus Christ was a spiritual being, and all those that are reborn or born again are made spiritual beings and are expected to Walk in the Spirit not in the flesh. 1Corinth 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. We worship God and communicate with God basically in our spirits, before being born again our spirits are separated from God's Spirit, that's why we are considered dead. Man was created as a living soul. Living in the sense of been connected to God, the spirit been alive as it were. Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. The bolded are the three parts of man. dust is the body, breath of life is the spirit from God, and the soul is ofcourse the soul. They were so fused together that there were no strivings against the things of God or of the Spirit. The spirit reigned, but then man fell/died and now his soul or body now reigns. there is an ursurping. man is now primarily referred to as flesh, fleshly i.e relating to the soul and body who are now more pronounced and reigning as the spirit has lost its source of true life. Self now sits as king. Gen 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be a hundred and twenty years. We are now commonly referred to as all flesh, everybody, and as souls. Gen 12:5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came. The souls in the verse above is very much interchangeable with body or person or being. Gen 46:27 And the sons of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, were two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were threescore and ten. The soul is our natural life, the spirit is where our spiritual life is. The soul is the seat of self life, awareness, reasoning. the spirit is where the Lord dwells. It is innermost just like the temple of God, that had the outer courts, the holy place, and the holy of holies. You meet God in the holy of holies. |

Maybe my version will be easier to understand. A Man (Human) is A Soul. He exists and is sensed on Earth among the living cos he have A Body. You can't exist as a Man on earth, among the living, without a Human Body. The controlling factor, which directs his acts, thoughts etc is via an External Driving Force....I.e Spirit which could be Good or Bad. The mans body could be habited or co-habited by Spiritual elements and entities. While his Soul could also be made subject to these entities. |
Re: What Is The Difference Between SOUL & SPIRIT? by Freksy(m): 6:02am On Jun 23, 2012 |
Logic Mind: Buzugee is wrong as usual. I think there is a little mix up. You are right when you say soul and spirit are not the same, but your explanation of soul is not in line with the scripture you quote. If soul sins, according to Ezekiel 18:4 & 20, then what is soul in this context? Humans are souls. Soul is not a micro chip or storage device in man as you claim. Just like a manufacturer woul explain how he manufactured his product, the maker of man has explained how he made man at Gen 2:7. You are a product or result of something. As you read the Genesis, note that the cominOg together of dust from the ground and the breath of life from God became(=) a living soul. In short, dust from the ground and(+) the breath of life from God became(=) a living soul(you), the result. Ac 27:37 We were in all two hundred seventy-six persons on the ship. New English Translation (NET) And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls. King James Version (KJV) The Bible shows that soul has blood, which means, man, with life and blood in him is a soul. See Jer. 2:34 The Bible also refers to animals as souls. See the following scriptures: Nu 31:28; Re 16:3; Le 24:18 Man, having life, is said to have soul. In other words, soul is also translated to mean 'life' Mr 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? King James Version (KJV) For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? World English Bible (WEB) WHAT IS THE SPIRIT? In the Bible, the words translated "spirit" basically mean "breath." But this implies much more than the act of breathing. The Bible writer James, for example, states: "The body without spirit is dead." (James 2:26) Hence, spirit is that which animates the body. This animating force cannot simply be the breath, or air, moving through the lungs. Why not? Because after breathing stops, life remains in the body cells for a brief period—"for several minutes," according to The World Book Encyclopedia. For this reason efforts at resuscitation can succeed, and body organs can be transplanted from one person to another. But once the spark of life is extinguished from the cells of the body, all efforts to restore life are futile. All the breath in the world cannot revive even one cell. The spirit, then, is the invisible life-force—the spark of life—that keeps the cells alive. This life-force is sustained by breathing.—Job 34:14, 15. Is that spirit active only in humans? The Bible helps us to reach a sound conclusion in this regard. Wise King Solomon wrote: "Who really knows if the human spirit ascends upward, and the animal’s spirit descends into the earth?" (Ecclesiastes 3:21) New English Translation (NET). So animals as well as men are spoken of as having a spirit. Both humans and animals "have but one spirit." (Ecclesiastes 3:19) Hence, when a person dies, his spirit does not go on existing in another realm as a spirit creature. Both(humans and animals) go to the same place, both come from the dust, and to dust both return. Ecclesiastes 3:22 WHAT, THEN, IS THE CONDITION OF THE DEAD? AND WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SPIRIT WHEN A PERSON DIES? - the Bible provides answers to all of this. |

Have you ever thought of the difference between Soul (Nafs) and Spirit (Ruuh)? Below is my point of view, what is yours? Soul is the self, and when the soul desires something, it asks the Spirit for power. The Spirit is a guide with all rules that tells the Soul what are the rewards or punishments of what the Soul desires. Only when the Soul signs that it accepts these rewards or punishments, then the Spirit is allowed by God to channel the exact required energy to the Body to enact the Soul's desire. This Soul-to-Spirit-to- Soul-to-Spirit-to-Body communication is faster than anything we may think of so everything we do (move, breath, think, etc.) must go through this process at realtime even if we don't realize it. This is the meaning of "La hawala wa la quata illa bi Allah" = "No ability-to-transform nor force-to-act but that of Allah's (swt)". The Soul signs for all deeds, good and evil, and when we die, we will see all of our singnatures in a our own judgement book. And Allah knows all, Adepegba Abdganiyy God > infinity |

(4:1) O mankind! reverence your Guardian-Lord, who created you from a single nafs, created, of like nature, His mate, and from them twain scattered (like seeds) countless men and women;- reverence God, through whom ye demand your mutual (rights), and (reverence) the wombs (That bore you): for God ever watches over you. Nafs are sometimes translated as Soul or Spirit. The Spirit and body do not have a frequent appraise but symbolize opposite ends of a field - one is like a breath from God who is inimitable, who is One. The other is from the material world which is characterized by diversity and diffusion, where true unity is impossible due to the very nature of matter which requires existent material things to be separate and apart from one another in both space and time. Any movement towards man’s bodily or clay aspect represents a descent toward dispersion and multiplicity. If the Spirit aspect dominates, then order and correct proportion will be given to all of man’s existence - the body won’t be denied its due, but all things will attain the correct proportion. (Qur’an 91: 7-10) By the Soul, and the proportion and order given to it; And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right; Truly he succeeds that purifies it, And he fails that corrupts it! The Qur’an also tells us that the nafs is one of the places where God discloses himself to man. It says: (41:53) Soon will We show them our Signs on the horizons, and within their own nafs, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. The nafs is what makes us human. It unites two disparate worlds in one location and through this makes it possible for man to draw near to God. It is with the unique nature of this nafs that God created the first human and then its mate of a similar nature, and from these two come all other human beings, all carrying this nafs with all its latent potential within themselves. This is the nature with which mankind has been created - as a creature capable of knowing God through fulfilling the capabilities, the potentials God has placed within him. |

Body ; thats the visible you Soul ; the self, intellect. that part of you that i am communicating with right now. when people say you are a nice person they mean your soul. a bad person, that's your soul i.e. any description of you that does not involve your body, is describing your soul. Spirit ; the godliness in you. is a monitor, advisor to you. it's all up to you to use it. when you are about to sin, there is a voice within you that will always tell you that what you are about to do is wrong. that is the godly spirit. so when we pray, we are trying to elevate our soul to the level of the godly spirit within us. it does not matter which religion you belong to. 1 Like |

THEY ARE SIMILAR BUT QUITE DIFFERENT Soul is the incorporeal (i.e. Not composed of matter; having no material or physical existence ) and immortal essence of a person. Imagine if your body is splitted into head and trunk and you are still aware of yourself. That 'self' that is seperated from ur body is your soul. It is the life in your body (flesh). It is what lives on after carnal death. Spirit is more complex to define as it has many differing meaning but it is also an incorporeal or immaterial being. The main difference is that souls are always associated with a body but spirits can be independent (e.g. Demons). Spirits can also possess a living body that already has a soul. In this case, the body struggles with the personalities. Meanwhile, both words can still be used interchangeably. A physical example that is similar to these two is the mind (brain) because it is what determines who we are. It contains our history and controls our actions(body). So animal can have soul too *sigh* I'm getting confused. No wonder Jesus sent evil spirits into the pigs. |
Re: What Is The Difference Between SOUL & SPIRIT? by God2man(m): 4:54am On Jun 24, 2012 |
Biblical differences can only be found in 1 Corinthians 15:45 " And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit." There is no Biblical defnition for the two; soul and spirit. The two can be confused together. They are also used interchangeably in the Bible. Biblically, there is a spiritual body, there is a natural body. Summarily, from what i gathered from two topics on nairaland, i have discovered new things. Man is complex and mysterious in terms of human configuration. God has given us brain to reason and to analyse things. There has been a lot of conjecture about the differences and similarities between soul and spirit. Let us look at it this way, man is a spirit, having a soul, living in a container called the body. The spirit is the strongest. It has a mysterious connection with God. Proverb 20:27 " The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly" it is the real you. The real being. It is a path that God uses to speak to us, in other words we are connected to the realm of the unseen through the spirit. This spirit where God communicates to us now becomes our conscience. The Police of God. It is there. It is always talking whenever we have done something bad. We may not hear it, but it is a silent voice of God. That is why many armed robber do various things to suppress the voice of the conscience, they smoke, drink, use juju and so on. It is possible to have a dead conscience. The soul is earthly in human configuration. It depends largely on what happens around us. We see things differently, we reason differently. The soul is the platform where we reason intellectually or otherwise. It is the seat of intellect. It is also complex; mind, emotion, will. When the mind is trained, you become competent in whatever you are doing. When you are hurt, you will be overcome with emotion and burst into tears. The will is the strongest out of the three, you take a decision, you make a choice, i will do it, i will not do it. The will power resides in the soul. The body is the container. It is more earthly than soul. It is what we can see, physically. It is what we can touch,Feel, Grab. It is the part that relate with the physical world around us through the eyes, nose, ear, mouth. It is the natural body. After death, the body is useless. You put on a spiritual body. Whatever you have done will go with you to the judgement of God. That is another topic. Conclusively, how can we understand everything in this world, when we even find it difficult to understand the differences between soul and spirit? How? This is my own submission. God bless you. God2man. |

Man is a spirit that lives in a physical body. With his spirit, he interacts with the spirit realm (unfortunately, this ability to know the spirit realm, is hindered because of the great fall of the first humans. So many humans do not if even and not conscious of their spirit. This why anyone who succeeds to commune with the spirit realm; wether of God or of the evil one, becomes like a god on the earth.) man with his body interacts with this physical world. The soul is the product of the union of the spirit and the body. When the spirit came in contact with the body, "man became a living soul". Soul comprises of man's awareness, his sences, mind and emotions. Unfortunately, as a result of the great fall, man is more aware of his body nad physical life than his spirit. So many are spiritually "dead", they only live as mere bodily creatures. That is why so many live like ordinary animals. Yet, real life is only in the spirit. To get life in the spirit was what Jesus referred to as "being born again". |

Hello, May the elements of destruction in Nigeria see reasons to repent...Amen. Spirit is the finest, unattached core and origin of man. It's like the finest and simplest part of an element. It has the name spirit becuse it originates from the spiritual realm. The spirit is like an unpolished gem.. it's a gem. As the spirit makes it's downward movement from the spiritual realm to the earth, it passes through several other planes of existence. To successfully pass through each realm, it acquires a cloak that enables it adapt to each realm just like an astronaut wears his protective cloaks as he explores the space, as a welder in hot section is expected to be protected, as a deep sea diver wears protective and adaptive cloaks. When the raw gem, spirit acquires cloaks of other planes as it passes through them, it become denser, the spirit clad in other lighter cloaks is called the soul. The spirit animates the soul. As it approaches the earth , passing through the ethereal planes, it comes very close to the material called the astral, it's at this point that it attaches itself to the developing foetus at the middle of pregnancy (this is when a pregnant woman experiences her first "kick". After taking on the erthly gross material cloak (the human physical body), it becomes the human being ...note that it still carries the soul and spirit within. On departing from the erath (earthly death), it drops each cloak, one after the other as it acquired them. It drops the gross material physical body first and wears the one next to it which is often seen by those who are so 'open' to see it as 'ghost'.. at this level, it's at the astral which is so close to the gross material and bears semblance.. the astral is still part of material state. So it is as simple as : SPIRIT (RAW MATERIAL) + OTHER CLOAKS = SOUL ; SOUL + MATERIAL BODY= EARTH MAN (HUMAN BEING). Thank you.... very willing to entertain questions on this. |
