Hi mama,

Try substituting normal milk with soya milk for his cereals and beverages. Other plant based milk such as rice milk, almond milk and coconut milk can also be used if you can find. You could also use lactose free milk, not sure they sell them in naija though.

Increased White blood count is usually a sign your body is fighting off an infection of some sort or it could be as a result of his allergies.
I dont want to stress you out anymore but If it is constantly high it may be a sign of something more serious.. Ask your doctor to run the tests again since he has has finished the medication and try and get a referal for a heamatologist or go find one yourself if your doctor starts speaking too much english. A blood specialist is likely to shine some light on the reason for the high levels if it doesnt reduce.

Good luck.

thanks ma God bless u.

Try getting activity walker and hold her hands and walk together. It helps. Most imp, keep encouraging her.

Hello everyone, my 15 months old started walking 2 weeks ago but she can only take 10 steps. In a day she may decide not to walk at all. Most times, if we try to make her stand she will sit down or start crying. I don't know what to do because she is tall and people are always asking.

I also have had to stop using Ariel detergent completely for babys laundry. I discovered it was fuelling the fire. If you can afford it you can buy Dreft detergent otherwise buy some milder detergent like sunlight, give clothes a good rinse after wash ,I mean several times . If you have a washer please wash clothes at 60degrees celcius, or be sure to use baby care setting.

Dreft is cool, especially if the baby has sensitive skin (sounds like your LO is sensitive to the cleaning enzymes in Ariel, have you tried Persil non-bio? It's gentler for sensitive skin), Persil or Tide works just as well (and are more easily available and I know Persil is cheaper) plus you can add Baking soda to any detergent to make it clean better and work as a fabric softener. We used liquid detergent and we got more stains (for washers, everyone says powder detergents are better). I was told Baby Care setting on a washer tended to destroy clothes faster. I use Intensive care (most washers are HE, so you need a lot of water to rinse and Intensive care does that) and set the heat to 40°C. But if your Baby has sensitive skin or a fungal infection or yeast infection, then the 60°C hot water is good for killing everything in the clothes (recommended for fungal infections) for a temporary time and then bleach with cold water after and rinse thoroughly. I use clothe diapers and that's how we roll laundry-wise, and I don't think we have had rashes due to the diapers (heat rashes, we didn't escape). That's my take away from my own experience. I'm sure others have theirs to share. smiley

Hello beautiful mothers.. Gudevening to u all. I'm new here, just discovered this forum... God bless u all for the love and concern u have for each others wellbeing and that of our precious little ones.

Pls I Hv an issue that had been giving me concern. I pit to bed a little over a week ago to my beautiful daughter. She was constantly checked by different doctors for jaundice ( she is very fair), and each one always said I was lucky she didn't hv it... She was discharged even before me... To my surprise on the day I was to be discharged( 3 days ago) another doctor came and checked her out and within secs said my baby had jaundice. I almost fainted.. He asked for a buliburum test to be carried out and it came out 10 mg... He demanded for a second one the following day and it was still d same.. He discharged us and said it wasn't much, and to come back in 2 weeks time. He also said I should take her out in the sun every day. She has a bit of yellow coloring in her eyes which breaks my heart. are there any home remedies that i can use on her before the 2 weeks appointment, cos its just too long for me.. Some family and friends have suggested unripe pawpaw water, glucose water, coconut water, but am not very sure abouut those. Pls mothers helppp!!!!..
Just to add, she sucks very well, infact round the clock, she poos well and have not had any rise in temperature..

My son had a very high bilirubin level of abt 18.5 and after two days of phototherapy it came down to 14.5, we were discharged and guess what my mum in law used to clear d nonsense? Unripe paw paw water......my dear it works wonders I guarantee that.

Don't know abt early morning sun in dis rainy season sha but trust me jaundice isn't anything to be worried abt, I'm almost sure that if u run anoda test it wud Av gone down and once it goes down even if it is by 1% den be rest assured dat it's gone.

PS. I did a lot of googling and reading and asking wen my son had it cos I was scared to death, dats how I know all dis grin

The phototherapy actually did the job and not unripe paw paw water. Phototherapy helped in breaking down his high biluribin levels. Jaundice in newborns is caused due to the fact that their liver which could have broken down the biluribin has not fully developed. For some babies, it will go away without treatment, some might need phototherapy, while severe cases will need blood transfusion. Why would you want to give ''unripe paw paw water'' with a possibly acidic content to a newborn with underdeveloped liver? undecided Why stress a newborn's liver at an early stage?

I'm also a FTF!

cheesy cheesy cheesy
Father of many nations! You dey vex?

Oya oh mothers in da house lets show this papa some love.... grin

If she is 8 months start her on solids. Offer her a few spoons of food and water from a cup before offering her the boob!

Sorry i dont use formula per se so i cant advice on brands and prices but am sure other mama's will give you the low down.

See below for a few food ideas from an earlier post. As she begins to eat more solids hopefully her milk intake will reduce. I try to base my lo's meals around what we eat. So if we are having potato and chicken for dinner i boil her own potato and blend it with small chicken and presto!! Her lunch for the next day and freeze the extra in single portion quantities so defrosting is easy and you only use what you need per meal.

Note: You will need to invest in a masher, small blender or hand blender.

Menu Update:
An update on be beans below after cooking press it through a fine wire sieve to remove the skin ans leave a very smooth puree.

Also on the oats- blend it raw into a near powder constitency to remove the lumpiness before cooking as usual. I then mixed it with mashed banana or other sweet puree. I my opinion - no milk is needed as it is very sweet. I have also done this with baby rice when i didnt have any expressed milk on hand.

Avocado and hard boild egg yolk seems to be a hit with my lo.

We are planning some plantain pottage this week made with ripe and a bit of unripe plantain. Also some thai curry with potato and basmati rice.

AlphaHandMaiden:

If you search the thread there have been a few suggestions on foods to introduce. Start with smooth mash/purreed and after a while graduate to mashed with soft lumps before going for choped up soft pieces.

Fruits to mash or puree include:
●Banana
●Apples - cooked in a few spoons of water and blended
●Mangos-
●Pears - cooked like apples
●Watermelon

Vegges include:
●Carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, pasnip, Green Peas - steamed/cooked till soft before mashing
●Avocados
●Sweet potato, Irish potato
●Yam
●Ripe plantain
●Beans - cooked till very soft and mashed ( you may want to wash off the skin as babies dont digest them.....
●Lentils ( i am going to substitute this for beans next time as i no get power to wash beans skin! And once these are cooked a good whisking will pretty much mash it up.
●Spinach or other leafy veg - steamed and blended.

Other foods include
●Eggs- hard boiled (some will say yolk only till a year old)
●Toast - cut into strips that he can hold.
●Oats - make with water, add some milk (either breast or follow-on) this can be sweetened with fruit purees
●Baby cereals- baby rice or creamy porridge
●Adult cereals with no added sugar/salt like shreddies. You can even check weetabix as well- not sure if it has added sugars though

Basically he can eat most things you eat, just cut down on the pepper, salt and seasoning. Pounded yam, amala, semo with draw soup - finely chopped okra seems to be a hit. Avoid rice for now until he is used to eating.

I have given my LO beans and boiled ripe plantain and removed hers before i added the palm oil, and mashed it. I was very judicious with the plantain.

Start with single flavours first before start mixing. This is so that you can notice if he has any allergies to any of the foods. Also focus more on the vegges as it may take a while for him to get used to the new taste. the fruits are naturally sweet so babies tend to take these easier.

Am sure other mamas can add to the list....

Good luck!

For d sweating, my baby sweat a lot, what I do is that I make sure he wore something that cover his chest and wear socks for him at night, then I use cover cloth for him when d weather is cooling, remove again when sweating, I have packed his sleeping suits somewhere, not in use for now. Also I make sure d cutton is always raised down at night but windows opened. I think this help.

Thanks ma'am I appreciate

Why dont you wear her a thick short sleeved body suit with socks and then cover her up with flannel, that way the cold doesnt hit her directly and her skin gets to breathe.

@keji3, based on my experience with my ds, he sweats for africa, bathes him @ night, use agnesia powder and wears singlet to cover his chest and rib and stomach region, then wears trouser and socks. Although it doesn't stop the sweating but gives room for small breeze to touch him if there is power or I do the manual fanning from time to time. As for the milk, a child below 1, its not advisable to give cow milk(adult milk) my ds is 2+ and uses peak123, there is even peak456 but intend to go straight to adult milk.

@ma'am sayoddy, u are very right, in my facility, we are asked to come @6weeks for pap smear as per the cervical screening and results will b out in a month. If anything comes up, the doctor handles it from there. Its advised that all sexually active women should do it but the awareness is still poor. Kudos to u on your baby's weight, I pray to be like you. Really love big babies o, although I don't have flesh bt God gives me the strength to handle them. You didn't say what u learnt about d family planning na.

@ayobarmy, as advised by other mamas, pls try giving your baby solids, as in adult food, u can also try giving pap after some days.

Ur baby's jaundice is mild that's why u were discharged. Its something early morn sun can take care of now and her eyes will turn white with time. My 1st Child's jaundice was so high that even photo therapy couldn't treat it and she ended up doing EBT(exchange Blood Transfusion).

hmm,my friend lost her 3 WK old to it.it wasn't checked in the hospital.
by the time they ran back to the hospital it was late.
pls let's not overlook some of this signs and pls avoid giving our lo's concoction mixture cos its still the same liver dat'll process it and the bilirubin level differs which would influence the type of treatment that'd be given
we did photo therapy for my son for 3 days before we were cleared to go home.
it is well with us

What's the hurry for him to sit dear? Let him sit when he's ready oh.

Some children start teething early you'd just have to go with the flow.

Hopefully his teething will be with minimal drama ie no fever or stooling.

Nothing to fret about if you're still breastfeeding. Children will always be different. Pap without milk has carbs in it so it has some nutritional value. As long as many accepts it well then there's nothing to fret about. The rest of the nutrients you'll make up for when breastfeeding!
