....actually you guys are making some point,my prayer is that God will raise a good leader in Nigeria and africa as whole.Instead of fighting a civil war on Nairaland forum, let us begin to direct our anger to every corrupt leader because they are the root of all evil.US,UK,Canada,France...government knows their citizen will never take a "F**K that is the more reason they make sure they satify them.In Nigeria we take a lot of "nosense that is why they keep giving us "cheat".I heard you guys talking about credit cards,Credit cards are not cheap to come by, it is equivalent of your monetry worth. If you dont have a good job you can never have a credit card.My brothers,if you have the opportunity to travel out the country legally do it,within a year you will have a good story to tell.

factbox: GUDDYLOVER! u can't understand, just because i'm still skooling does not mean i'm blind to what ppl are going tru arround me. little is enough for d wise. I PRAY U ARE GRANTED CANADIAN VISA SO DAT U CAN COME AND PERFORM SOME MIRACLES. I HAVE BEEN EXPECTING A REPLY FROM DOUBTING AND STURBBORN THOMAS LIKE U THOUGH. best of luck in ur abroad mission. I REST MY CASE. ONE MORE THING! FOR UR INFORMATION ppl abroad are more frustrated than u do anyways.
I live in the UK, and I must admit that I suffered here whilst I was a student. I did all sorts of minimum wage jobs just to eke out a miserable existence for myself in an unholy climate. There were times when I couldn't even afford to eat 3 square meals simply because I had accommodation and other bills to pay. I think this story is the same for most international students except those who have rich parents ready to sponsor their bills.

This tale of woes all changed when I finished school and started working full-time and earning a decent salary. Today, I am living the dream and enjoying all the good things living abroad has to offer. My point is that your story on people abroad being frustrated is not entirely true. I believe the frustration I experienced as a student was a personal sacrifice I had to pay to get to where I am today with no financial or visa issues. That doesn't mean that I haven't seen people working full-time jobs who also struggle, I think each job has got its own unique challenges which people choose/choose not to accept.

Look dude with all due respect you're not making any sense with your post above, Nigeria is a banana republic where anything goes and for those of us abroad if some of us go back home today we'll still be given priority above Nigerians living in Nigeria in terms of jobs or political apppointment. This is not about bragging as I have nothing to gain from braging of any form, for instance please tell us if you know anything that someone like John Fashanu ever contributed to Nigeria, now he has made so much money in Nigeria than he probably ever made in his footballing career. Nigeria is a country where government don't give a damn about whether you die or exists, as long as they can see something to gain by associating themselves with you Nigerian political elites will wine and dine with you but care less about an average Nigerian who is yearning to feel the presence of a government.

As for posters saying home is the best, it depends on what is home to you, to some people home is where they are born while to some people home is where they are loved and welcomed.

You diasporans talk as if great jobs are a guarantee once you finish M.Sc. Do you mean the papers and my best friend Deji who completed his Msc top of the class at RGU a year ago are lying? They say white-collar jobs are bloody scarce, and that's even when you're white not a parasitic black pseudo-immigrant. You see, i have no problem with you guys living off these oyinbos, my annoyance is when you think that makes you superior, pointing at your fatherland with the left hand.

The fact is that no one is saying living abroad makes you superior to people living back home. I just can't help it when people talk shit about living abroad, only because many of you have been denied visa so many times and now you feel helpless. If you think getting out of the country is the best for you, then why don't you take the chance and stop all these: they said PhD holders drive cabs and stuffs.Patriotism will lead us to nowhere, you need to 'make hay while the sun shine'

No place like home my foot. To some home is where police treat you like a piece of shit; home is where the looter(political elites) don't care about their fellow citizens

To me home is where you feel loved and welcome.

I wonder those who are defending nigeria compare to canada.a country where millions of graduate are jobless,a country where 90 percent of d citizen are living in abject of poverty and a country where there is no social security scheme, how can a sane person compare a whole canada with nigeria where nothing work?

Sometimes I wonder how some people reason, if you like Nigeria so much that you want to stay there at all costs then so be it. People migrate for different reasons and mind you sweeping streets with Phd is better than roaming about with your Phd with nothing to do. In the end its down to choice, in a country like Nigeria if you have some health problems its undoubtedly a death sentence. In the UK here government can spend several thousands of pounds on just one patient, some patient with kidney failure can have dialysis 3 times a week free, tell me if you have such problem in Nigeria how can you survive even with your hard work? abi na persin wey sick go dey do hard work?

You keep missing the point. No one is saying going abroad is not a good thing. However, if you have to spend $50-80k on a degree and there is a good chance you wont get a job, maybe, just maybe you should think twice about it. As bad as things are, there are people making it in the same Naija. Instead of spending years looking for paper and doing underground jobs, maybe you could own your own sh** in your own country. This same naija yall are heaping abuses is the same one lebanese and indians are becoming millionaires in

what do you mean there is a good chance they wont get a job after spending so much on a degree, do you think those places is like Nigeria whereby 90% of their graduate are roaming about the street without a job. Most of them are half-baked graduates anyways!

Talking about Lebanese and Indians becoming millionaires in Nigeria, they too are immigrants, they came from their countries to seek greener pasture in Nigeria, so whats the deal if some Nigerians are doing the same.

Patriotism wont lead you anywhere, you just need to face it. Just an advise if you have your way, you better get the F**k out of that place.

confirm jare, God bless you.

although people always say that there is no place like home, but my own definition of home is where i am very comfortable and have access to all the social amenities that I want. I live in the scandinavia, and a lot of people seems to talk well and big about canada of which is really true, but I have couple of canadian friends that left canada to finland and also, finnish friends that hate their country so much and wonder what an immigrant would be doing here, who eventually left to other countries too, but It depends on personality. Nigeria government are so heartless, that i sometime think if they dont know that they are not going to live forever to spend all what they have acquired, the level and rate at which they embezzle money is beyond imagination, i feel so bad seeing how other western countries has so much developed themselves and their society, that you wonder if Nigeria can still CATCH UP, but I know its not impossible.

@factbox, i really dont understand your stand, or which country you are actually trying to defend, but through your post, you are talking in favour of Nigeria and now i'm wondering what you are doing in Canada. And i a very sure that after your studies, you would immigrate through the economic class programme to a permanent resident.

Nigeria is not a place to be if you want to develop yourself and have a better future for your families if you are still a young man, and unfortunately, the unborn kids will grow up in these system and become more corrupt than the previous ones and makes me wonder where the change and transformation of nigeria would come from. the one thing that pain me the most about Nigeria is the absence of a reliable social security system or a population register that register all citizens immediately they are born and store records of everyone data like offense, job, marital status, address and so on (or will I say we are too poor or not develop to have it?)a person that committed crime some years ago can still contest for election and so on, a foreigner can come in and claim his passport due to its absence, its so bad. some of the crime committed abroad are done by other people and not even nigerians, but for the fact that they have the ability to get the passport make the shame goes to the country.

may God help Nigeria, Amen

This thread is being disrespectfully hijacked by people who don't buy the immigration idea. it is very unlikely that people who want to immigrate will suddenly listen to you because you have the privilege - from wherever - to post your opinion on the internet. This thread seems meant to inform people interested in the Fed Workers Scheme that that programme has been deferred. What is with people casting others for making choices on change of location, or choice of what home is? I think people should be more respectful and also intellectually constructive when they want to sell - not impose or hype - opinion.

I would expect that people pursuing this programme would be informed to a fair extent given that the immigration to Canada supports holders of higher education. Please don't let us mix up our political or other sensitivities with the core conversation here. Much unlike parts of the world where governance is based on informed decision to largely support the general interest, it is in these parts that people want to impose their opinions of aspects on life, disciplines and conditions that they have knowledge base of save from hearsay.

It is very evident that some parts of the world are working and some parts are not. Where are we obligated to ingrain ourselves to one part of the world without considering another if the opportunity presents itself?

I thought this thread was supposed to get people informed about the Federal Skilled Worker program to Canada being temporarily freezed!

I would also like to suggest people who are abroad discouraging people home from coming over should practise what they preach, they should come home and tell people their stories.Theh they'd have succeeded in driving home their points if they have any cogent ones.

Anybody who goes outside the country especially to developed countries and complain about the system put in place by these countries can never do well in Nigeria. Put those people in positions of authorities in Nigeria and you'd have succeeded in putting the cat to guard the fish,if you understand what I mean.it is evident that their level of pilfering will attain a gigantic level such that mouth cannot express.

Let's talk more about the FSWP as it is being redesigned to ensure the economic action plan of Canada is being actualised and the attendant effect that will have on would-be immigrant and move away from this momentary diversion of attention by people who, when you dig deep into their background are lazy bones who feel everything should be free without giving anything in return to get things of value.

Canada is a country with no jobs for new immigrants, regardless of however suitably qualified they are, young or senior. Even the simple blue-collar jobs are hard to find. But most of the immigrants are highly educated in their respective fields. They have migrated to Canada with the hope of being able to land at least something close to their white-collar professions left behind.

Following at least six months to two years of frantic job searching, the new immigrants (doctors, engineers, professors, bankers, business executives) are forced to take up ordinary low-paid jobs as factory workers, security guards, waiters or in supermarkets, call centres or convenience stores, which lead to their low morale and low self-esteem. Even such works — to the detriment of both health and mind — are sometimes hard to find. This is really heartbreaking as it is demoralizing at the same time leaving them in a state of despair and despondency.

Canada remains depressing for new immigrants especially for the educated. Until recognition is given to them by creating ample opportunities for jobs it would remain so — a shattered dream.

Listen, mate, what Iam saying is that if you have an artisan trade-as a welder, painter, construction worker, plumber, mechanic, driver, etc-then by all means go to Canada, plenty of those jobs lying around.

However, why go to University, obtain a Masters's or PHD to do kpeke work, surviving paycheck to paycheck and saddled with credit (debt), that you can never be able to pay back? When I visited there, every other cab driver or waitress in Ottawa seemed to have a Master's or PHD. cry

Who said anything about not paying taxes? Read through my post, I may have used a lot of "IF" to open your eyes to what you wouldn't look at! Well its your own opinion, but this is mine I spent more then 7 years growing up in the u.k then- a very long time ago, I can still remember vividly being pushed into a departmental store shelf by some other white kids while all the items fell on me I still have a mark on my face to show as a racist trophy, a friend of mine was blinded with a knock out which they have proscribed in the U.k now, and so many racist remarks went with it, well those are my experiences, my father was an accountant in the u.k I was placed in a school/class for factory workers until my mother whom use to work as the only black in the cadbury milk and chocolate production came and introduced herself immediately I was moved, right now it isn't as visible as that again!
I used the, "IF" a lot, because of the likes of GEJ, and their generation adults walk freely and don't pay cognisance of the things that happen to the more vonorable (children) to associate freely with, for their parents the fear of deportation for minor flimsy reasons has put a lot of them in check, yes you don't have to expect to share the same benefits that the indigents have but at least some level of human respect!! Just my point of view though, you have yours
Re: Canada Freezes Federal Skilled Worker Program by Delta007(m): 8:41pm On Jul 03, 2012
What's all this talk about debt and credit? I do not even know where to start. If you as an individual do not know how to use other people's money to create your own wealth and end up racking up debt, then that's your cup of tea. Rather than complain, learn and understand the system. The one major reason the private sector in Nigeria still drags on is simply because the country lacks a "workable" credit system; but then, folks like you will never know the importance of credit in any progressive society.

While you complain about immigrants who are not able to get jobs, there are tons of immigrants out there who are doing very very well. The onus is on you as an immigrant (not the government) to make the best of what Canada has to offer. The govt on the other hand have been working with different organizations to remove restrictive policies so as to create more opportunities for immigrants. Today, Vancouver is city basically run by Asians. The Lebanese are immigrants who own properties and run enterprises all over the country worth billions of dollars; same with the indians while you are here crying because mummy did not give you milk. To succeed anywhere, including Nigeria, you have to adapt, learn the system and work hard. The same Nigeria that folks are crying is a hell hole is the same place foreigners are investing and multiplying their capital; same with Canada.

And to the other misinformed individual, the healthcare system is free. Yes, even if you have cancer, you do not pay a dime (as far as you are a resident) except on drugs and if you have an extensive coverage through your employer, the cost is very minimal.

Back to this topic, the freeze is only short term to clear some back log and modify the program. Canada is positioned to take in more immigrants but the current program is not adequately meeting today's needs.

Lastly, immigration is not for everybody. It's a free world.

Valid point. I know it was quite hard for my parents, but isn't that to be expected? Most immigrants migrate without a job to Canada, and it will naturally take a while to get settled.

Like other posters have said, fact remains that the Western world is full of opportunities. My parents migrated here, and I can't thank them enough. I'm 21 and in my final yr of uni. I also work fulltime in the summer, I worked over 70 hours per week one summer. I also work part time during the school year and I save up and travel the world when I'm not in school. I'm also developing my resume in the process. My brother and I have also started our own business. You work for what you have, and there are many rewards for creativity and hardwork in this part of the world.

Seriously, @factbox sounds like a bitter person and your NL handle negates your comments here. Please change your user id. There is just no basis for comparism between Nigeria and Canada to match both countries at par.

I am off to Canada before this month runs out and I do not expect to see a red carpet laid before me so I am not even discouraged by your comments.

I have the premonition that the proposed changes to Canadian skilled worker program will be tilted to favour the non-professional skilled workers judging by the speculations and the different articles being published in Canada and around the world by immigration consultants/expert.

it is being muted that there will be significant changes to three selection criteria namely work experience, age and language proficiency.

it is being said, though a speculative theory as far as I'm concerned, that the age bracket will put the maximum age limit to get the maximum 10 points at 35 as against the current age limit of 49.

The language proficiency will have 20 points as against the current 16 points. The professional skilled jobs will have the language requirement bar raised while the non professional skilled jobs will have a lower language proficiency requirement.

Another area of the proposed change will be the qualifications assessment by responsible professional bodies in Canada,an area which have similar features with Austrian immigrantion.Qualifications will now be assessed before application for the skilled worker program will be accepted,a way to reduce the influx of skills which are not in high demand in Canada.

I believe with time all of these changes will be made public but until then, everything remains speculation.

Well it gives some other people more time to prepare though my work experience is not really related to my field of study.
