There are many popular arguments when it comes to moon sighting... What are the common ones? We can explore what the opinions of the scholars are...

^What did the Prophet (SAW) say about it especially in the context of starting and ending Ramadan?

here in Nigeria especially the south-west, some people always say that they can't base the time they will start and end their fast on what those in the the North say

The prophet said : "Do not fast until you see the crescent-moon, and do not break the fast until you have seen the crescent moon, but if conditions are overcast for you then enumerate for it." [Bukhari]

If you are unable to sight the moon on the expected day, then complete 30 days of shabaan and start your fast..

Moon sighting should be local... ( The problem is what is the definition of local?): This is based on a hadith in muslim, abu dawud and tirmidi

Kurayb traveled to Syria encountered the start of Ramadan there on a Friday, upon return to Medina, informed Ibn Abbas that he had seen the crescent-moon on the night of Friday, and that the people in Syria, including Muawiyah the governor, had fasted on Friday. Ibn Abbas replied that they (in Medina) had seen the crescent-moon on Saturday, and that they would not stop fasting until they either saw it again, or had completed thirty days. Kurayb asked, "Will you not suffice with the sighting of Muawiyah?” Ibn Abbas replied, "No, that is how the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) commanded us.”

If you define local as being the whole of Nigeria, then the sighting of the moon in the North is fine...

People do not bother to search for the new moon in the south and it is not only a Ramadan thing. Hence, you cannot just wake up and say that you are a moon sighting expert when for 11 months you ignore the process.

If there were suspicions before, they shouldn't exist under the current Sultan of Sokoto's dispensation. He has made efforts to make the process transparent for anybody that cares to find out.

Tribalism is not a basis in Islam.
