its very rare for ECU aka brainbox to go faulty most of the time it is the sensors

but most mechanics in africa always blame the ECU becoz there are used to non ECU cars and are still learning ECU cars and also there is a difference between an auto electrian and mechanics most mechanics in africa play both parts

There is no one way of determining that. It includes the car not starting, transmission not engaging, scanner not linking with the ECU. It can be any or all of the above. Your best option of finding out is to plug in a scanner.
