The Speaker of the Oyo state House of Assembly, Mrs Monsurat Sunmonu, and wives of members are currently in London on N50 million jamboree.

The trip which was approved by Gov Ajimobi, is for what sources tagged ” Husband support training”. The women are expected to go and learn how to be effective spouses of members, in official capacities.

This is coming on the heels of a recent wasteful “working tour” of South Africa embarked upon by members of House.

According to the schedule, the delegation which includes retinue of aides attached to the Speaker, will spend ten days in London.

They are currently staying at the $200 per night Custom House Hotel, in East London.

Sources say the delegation is expected to visit some insitutions, do some sight seeing and embark on the tradtional shopping spree.

It was learnt that they had already visited the popular market at Peckham for shopping.

The PDP in the state had already condemned the trip which it tagged wasteful in a state where poverty is at its highest.

PDP southwest spokesman, Kayode Babade said monday in a statement ” is it in our constitution to send wives and husbands of House members on courses outside Nigeria…of what value is this to the people of Oyo”

“Legislooters” At Work: Oyo Assembly Members Wives’ Go On London Jamboree!

Political wonders will never end in Nigeria! Street Journal has found out that while members of the Oyo State House of Assembly have just come back from a “working” visit to South Africa, their wives are in the United Kingdom for a training tour. Checks revealed that the trip was put in place for them to learn how to assist their husbands on the job under the guise of a “Women of Caliber” programme.

Incidentally, the first controversy that trailed the present House of Assembly bothered on a foreign trip. In September 2011, three months after the present House was inaugurated, the leadership of the House proceeded on a trip to the United Kingdom. The trip was undertaken while the state was still mourning and counting its losses as a result of the flood that ravaged parts of the state on August 26, 2011.

The many efforts of the House to convince the populace that the foreign trips were meant to make them better in their legislative duties have however not yielded much as many people believe that their trips are based on frivolous purposes.

Checks from London, England revealed that the legislators’ wives were lodged in the Custom House Hotel on Victoria Court Road E16, London. Checks at the hotel revealed that the “Nigerian ladies” went out in the morning and came back around 7 pm.

Street Journal’s findings also revealed that like the controversial trip to the United Kingdom last year, this year’s trip might have been facilitated by the Honourable Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, using her clout as a former staff of the UK Home Office.

When our correspondent called the House of Assembly’s Information Officer on Monday to find out the basis of the trip, as well as whether it was funded by tax payers or private individuals, he declined comments. The Information Officer said “well, I cannot comment on that, what you should do is to call the Chairman of the House Committee on Information.” Honourable Olagunju Kolade, the Chairman of the Committee who represents Akinyele 1 Constituency could however not be reached as at the time of filing this report.
