He is not insulting you. Someone with no arms and legs could accuse you of insulting them by the statement you made too. I just think you misunderstood him. No insult intended in what he wrote. In the US someone with severe SSD can apply for disability and qualify for benefits. Having a disability is not an insult. You see it as that. He/She does not
Please just stop it. I am didn't see it as an insult. If you have been close to any Warrior you will understand the message I am trying to pass across.
Believe me the last thing the OP needs is pity party. In the States many people apply for all sorts of benefits, but I believe only a few Warriors will be applying for disability benefits.
You can check out Sickle Cell Warriors page on Facebook, it's US based group (Naija Sickle Cell Warriors got its name from there).
NB
Yeah I misunderstood him, but please lets mind our choice of words. The OP is still not in a right frame of mind for all this bickering on his thread.

I know you mean well also but maybe you should look up the meaning of disability before trying to correct someone. Being disabled is not only about visible physical impairment but could also be emotional, sensory and mental. In his case, SS could be classified as a form of non-visible disability which includes chronic pain, diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, etc. Thank you.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invisible_disability

I am not here to argue with you. I am living with SS, and I do not in any way conform to your definition of 'Disability' , visible or non-visible. I equally believe that the OP and other Warriors do not conform to such definition.
That is why a SS is quick to tell you that he/she is not looking for your pity. We will prefer you judge us on our own merit. Please.

Winneygirl: The Op is here crying because the man was able 2 beat her and no one took her side.
.
If the case were reversed, if after she 'rushed' him, if after the kettle magically ended up on the mans head, she had inflicted injuries that made the man cry and walk away, I'm sure she will be in her room gloating.
.
She is no victim here.
She was very very disrespectful to her B-I-L. If I were her Sis & she insulted my hubby like that, I would've joined also 2give her a good beating she wouldn't be able 2 eat solids for days.
.
Op, work on your attitude. Grow up and stop fighting over beans!!
Anakogheli.
isi odikwa gi nma?
Anyways na OP and her family. Some of us actually have seen where wild animals in human clothing were succesfully tamed.

I thought this section is moderated. Is there no MOD any more?
Someone is calling out for help, and some very insensitive fuul is trying to add to his miseries.

Hey Curtis,

How's it going? I'm not going to pretend like I understand what you’re going through because I don’t but what's certain is that you can choose how you deal with your situation. There are a lot of people that go through their daily lives in pain or overcome insurmountable odds just to do what feels ordinary to most. Giving up is the difference between people with disabilities that inspire us and those we don’t know about.

At 17, you have your whole life ahead of you, albeit in more pain than most people experience on average. Here are some people that overcame what seemed insurmountable at some point:

I know you mean well, but Sickle Cell is not a disability. The OP is whole..... He has two hands and two legs just like you.
Thank you.

ok.....
if people learn to control their anger issues, stuff like this are easily avoidable. don't complain when you pinch someone & he returns the gesture with a bullet. surely, it's disproportionate but if you did not pinch, He wouldn't need to shoot at anyone.

This back and forth will not solve anything. Just pray that in your wild imaginations that you don't encouunter people who will return violnce with violence a hundred times over.
The story I narrated earlier was a true life story, and I doubt that even those that witnessed the pouring of Hot Boiling Water will ever forget it. And Nobody ever tried laying hands on that particular cousin, ever again.

Your sister is blessed to have a protective brother like you. My very much younger bro, while walking with me stays by the main road. He'd rather walk close to the moving vehicle.

It is good to have siblings you can count on. Not one that is asking why you provoked him

LOL, at protective brother.
I am not talking about me protecting my sister. My sister will send the man (woman no fit try am) to the emergency ward.

what do angry people say when they wave the finger? isn't it "don't ever try this & that again with me & reh reh reh?" the OP said she was boiling like red beans & she "overreacted". can you in your infinite wisdom tell us what she meant by that?

read her 2nd post......

I read the second post, and I still insist that BIL was wrong.

Guy...I dont care about the guy, he was totally wrong to have slapped the babe, I agree the OPs sister needs to be careful as he would probably batter her if she points at him too.

that said...OP clearly has anger management issues, I'm surprised a lot of people seem to think she is blameless in this matter

tbh it's impressive she was honest enough to tell us what actually happened.
even if Op has anger issues, a BIL has no right. Absolutely No Right, to lay his fingers on OP.
So if I point a finger at you during arguement you will slap me and beat me, EVEN IN MY OWN HOUSE?
Coogar bro, the BIL met a cool headed person. Because some people will actually make sure that either one of them ends up in a hospital bed. I ain't exaggerating.
I actually had a cousin that after being beaten up by her uncle (mothers brother), went to the kitchen after everything has calmed down. Boiled water, and poured it on her UNCLE.
It's a true story.

And that is a good thing abi. At least she used a kettle on him. I hope he will have to nurse it for long or develop an hematoma as a result.

The Op made a big mistake. If it were my sister, that guy must surely end up in the hospital. There are no two ways about it. Even in there own house, my BIL or any other person for that matter will not dare lay his or her hands on my sister. And if you must do that, make sure that you do not stay around afterwards.

God forbid what will she say if when she hit him with the kettle he slumped and died.

Both parties were wrong in this case, it's all too simple to dress the woman up as a victim.
Let him slump and die naw. Why will anyone come to my house and lay his or her hand on me?
I hate the way people are reacting to this thread. What manner of man, goes to other people's house to beat them up?

i don't support violence too but it's sometimes necessary. she provoked the bro-in-law & she was pointing finger at him. he was only defending himself - what's he meant to do? wait for her to strike the first blow?
Coogar,
How did she provoke the Bro-In-Law? By asking that he return the book that she borrowed him?
Guy, forget story. If that BIL jam person like my sister (or even you) one person go reach heaven that day.
As in BIL, come to my own house to beat me up. Chai! na docile people full that family.

Your passion on SS issues is inspiring...

keep it up!
Many I suffer in silence for fear of discrimination, arousing undue pity, anger (yes, anger. Some are angry with you for always complaining).....
I am here to let people know that my voice cannot be subdued. That I have a right to air my views just as anyone else. That being a Warrior is not a death sentence, rather it is a condition and a condition that was not my fault. So why should I shut up and die in silence.
As a human being I have hope and aspirations, I have challenges, I set goals and targets and try to achieve them.
Sickle Cell is just a name of a condition, it does not define who I am. It does not stop me from reaching my goals, rather it challenges me to attain those goals.
Yes, I am here to let my kind, especially people like this young man to know that there are those who have passed through this stage and come out stronger.

am 17yrs old boy.
.Am ss,
.All i want is to be painfree, and feel loved...help me plz
Slim Curtis, to be sincere I am only interested in these three things, especially your age.
You are 17years old, that means you have fought a battle only few can understand. Congratulations my brother. You are a Warrior. A survivor.
Why will you want to give up now? Because you are on the verge of loosing your admission? Becausee mum, lost her job? I know that it's definitely not the pains, because you have been fighting for 17 good years. If it were the pains alone, you would have given up.
Pain Free Life
Immediately I saw Madam CC's post, I logged in with my Original handle Abali1 and opened this thread.
My man Slim, why not read those thread on Sickle Cell. I told those stories for my warriors brothers and sisters. Slim, did you know that I lost my dad I was 17years old, in SS3 few months to my WAEC & JAMB. How did I survive the lost?
Brother, the pain you must be experiencing is not just that of the physical pain caused by SS. But even at that, you can reach out to us NL Warriors. We even have a FB page..... Naija Sickle Cell Warriors created by your name sake Deco Slim.
Curtis, why not write me a mail at abiaaba4@gmail.com, I can't drop my phone number here but I will get back to you once I read your mail.

Health / Re: Project Sickle Cell Disease Awareness by Abali1(m): 1:17am On Oct 26, 2013
www.lindaikeji..com/2013/10/jumia-supports-breast-cancer-foundation.html?m=1
JUMIA , Nigeria’s leading online retailer and this year’s World Retail Award Winner, partners with 234Give to support the International Cancer Month. A substantial percentage of proceedings made during the Pink Week are given to the “Breast Cancer Foundation of Nigeria: BRECAN”

Two days ago, our air waves and most bloggers really did well in creating and spreading more awareness about breast cancer. The campaign for awareness is really gathering storm in the media, and I must commend organisations like Jumia for identifying with this campaign for breast cancer awareness.
Hmmmmmmm.....
But this also got me wishing that people (Organisations) will also get more informed about Sickle Cell Disease and help spread the awareness even if its just a quater of the awareness Cancer is getting, it will really make a huge difference.

Well, sorry to hear about the situation with your past relationship...I know we didn't choose our genotypes and all other traits.the basic truth is that we still have to be careful now that we are educated and enlightened enough to choose the possible traits our future kids can come up with.I said I was dating an AA like myself, and now we are no longer together.who knows maybe I'll end up marrying an AS,AC,or even SS (I pray against the SS case...lol).but the only reason why I can afford to think that way is because I am AA.My dear,if I happened to be AS or AC,I won't wanna imagine my child asking me in the future, why his/her mother and I didn't care to check our genotypes before marrying each other.

The bolded ain't funny. You are not better than SS people, you owe the life you are living to Almighty God. So stop furthering the stigmatization.
