At least five police officers were injured on Monday as a protest against security agents turned bloody at Eleko community in Ibeju-Lekki local government of Lagos State.

Bala Elkana, police spokesperson in the state, confirmed the development in an interview with PREMIUM TIMES. He said 51 protesters were arrested, following police reinforcement.

Speaking with our correspondent, one of the residents who asked not to be named said while residents and other company workers in the community were forced to stay in their houses, expatriates working with Dangote Refinery were allowed to go to their places of work.

The youth in the area burnt tyres on the streets to express their anger over the alleged bias.

The protest went bloody after the arrival of police officers, as the protesters resisted “intimidation.”

Mr Elkana told this newspaper that the protesters had been dispersed and normalcy restored in the community.

He said the protesters injured five police officers and vandalised two outposts.

The military has also been deployed to help maintain normalcy in Eleko, Ibeju-Lekki.

At the moment, people are allowed to walk in the community only with their hands up.

Kano State Government has revealed on Wednesday that it has applied for N15b from the Federal Government to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

The governor stated that the state had not received a dime from the federal government as support to fight the COVID-19 disease since when the state recorded its first index case of the virus. Kano’s COVID-19 cases are rising by the day and in just over a week, the cases are close to a hundred.

Ganduje had last week declared a lockdown to curb the spread of the virus within the state. He explained that the N15b would be expended in paying voluntary health workers engaged by the state to support the health personnel, personal protective equipment (PPE) and the creation of other testing centres.

“You can understand that Kano is the most populated in the country hence the only testing centre at AKTH is not enough for us,” said Ganduje. However, reacting to the reported mass death in the state, the governor denied the report. Daily Trust had reported that more than

150 persons had died off in three days last weeks but Ganduje said the figure is false. The Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19, on Wednesday, announced an investigation into the reported death so as to ascertain the actual cause and the number of deaths.

A 25-year-old man identified as Olusola Simeon, has been arraigned and convicted by a Magistrate court sitting in Osogbo, the Osun State capital for beating and inflicting injuries on his girlfriend, Fadunsi Alaba.

Simeon admitted guilty of the crime of assault, levelled against him by the police when he was arraigned on Tuesday.

The Prosecutor, Jafani Muslim, told the court that the convict committed the offence of assault on July 2, 2018 at about 9.15 pm at Agowande Area, Osogbo.

He said the convict inflicted injuries in his girlfriend of about six years, thus committed a crime that contravened section 355 of the criminal Code Cap 34 Vol 11, Laws of Osun State, 2003.

The victim, Alaba, was said to have gone to the convict’s house with intention of living with him after six years of dating.

The prosecution said the action of the victim infuriated the convict because of his wife and kids she met at home, hence the reason for beaten her.

The Magistrate, Mrs Awodele Modupe Adedoyin, found Simeon guilty and ordered that he be remanded in Ilesha prison custody.

She latter adjourned the case to August 3, for sentencing.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed his readiness to donate his blood as sample for research in the quest to find a cure to the COVID-19 pandemic.

When necessary, he said, his blood could be taken for evaluation by experts on post-infection protection against the deadly infection.

Makinde, who is a survivor of COVID-19, indicated his intention on Wednesday via his official Twitter account.

He wrote, “We have been advocating for local solutions to the COVID-19 pandemic in Oyo State. So, as a COVID-19 survivor, I volunteered to donate my blood to be studied by our experts researching on the ‘Evaluation of Post Infection Protection Against SARS-COV-2 (COVID-19) in Nigeria.”
