Romance / The Reasons Valentine Is So Popular by abdussalam(m): 8:08am On Feb 14, 2015

By Eseoghene Ohwojeheri

Dear Editor,

Bashfulness they say is part of faith. It thus follows that one who is shameless is one who suffers the disease of thinking he or she fell from the sky and even that sky was not created
On the 14th of February little girls and confused women will dress in red; randy boys and irresponsible men would have secured a “val” who they will play Romeo and Juliet with but as the idiot from Calabar who made the song puts it “all I want is your waist” hence illicit sex is the end game…
There are a number of reasons why Valentine is only second to Christmas in terms of the scale of celebration at least among Christians or perceived Christians;

1) IGNORANCE:

Ask almost anyone who celebrates Valentine the Origin of Valentine and they cannot tell you; they just follow. The best you can get out of these empty heads are conflicting reports as taught them by one American-wanna-be radio presenter who desperately speaks from her nose. It is the same way you can go around our society and ask the average youth what his first three objectives in life are and I wish you Goodluck finding someone who has a clue. No pun intended
So what really is Valentine’s Day? Let me share this quick quiz:
Valentine is:
a) a priest in the Roman Empire who helped persecuted Christians during the reign of Claudius II, was thrown in jail and later beheaded on Feb. 14.
b) a Catholic bishop of Terni who was beheaded, also during the reign of Claudius II.
c) someone who secretly married couples when marriage was forbidden, or suffered in Africa, or wrote letters to his jailer’s daughter, and was probably beheaded.
d) all, some, or possibly none of the above
This confusion over its origin led the Catholic Church, in 1969, to drop St. Valentine’s Day from the Roman calendar of official worldwide Catholic feasts. So you find that not only is it that the people who mark Valentine are ignorant of its origin; Valentine itself is a celebration of absolutely NOTHING

What is however clearly in history is what the old World Book Encyclopedia (Valentine’s Day. Volume 19. 1966, pp.205-206) states:
“…the customs of the day have nothing to do with the lives of the saints. They probably come from an ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia which took place every February 15. The festival honored Juno, the Roman goddess of women and marriage, and Pan, the god of nature…The Romans celebrated their feast of Lupercalia as a lovers’ festival for young people. Young men and women chose partners for the festival by drawing names from a box…After the spread of Christianity, churchmen tried to give Christian meaning to the pagan festival. In 496, Pope Gelasius changed the Lupercalia festival of February 15 to Saint Valentine’s Day February 14. But the sentimental meaning of the old festival has remained to the present time. Historians disagree about the identity of St. Valentine”.
Today not even the Pope can tell you which of the Saint Valentines (there are about 3 of them) is being “honoured” on the 14th of February…IGNORANCE IS VALENTINE AND VALENTINE IS IGNORANCE

2) IT PROMOTES THE ILLUSION

Another reason Valentine is so popular is that it plays into the illusion that there is love among a people that actually do not love themselves. In the US half of older women age 75+ live alone whereas their children are scattered around the place celebrating “love” with strange men. By 2030 there will be 9.6 million of such persons in America alone and some people are “looking for a val”.

If there was a Day for the Elderly it will not be as popular as Valentine. Matter of fact there is actually a World Health Organisation World Day for the Elderly only we don’t know the date as we know February 14 and its existence is another massive cover up of the fact that the elderly are neglected; in Nigeria they are left to suffer in the villages while in the western world they are dumped in old people’s home the same way they dumped their children in Day Care when women, like men, started pursuing money….fact is we have a society that is upside down and this Valentine nonsense is another delusion to make us think things are ok.

Movies upon movies your little girl watch the customized prostitutes she calls actresses fall in love and it only follows that she too wants to fall in love. She however forgets in her moments of day dreaming that the persons who act the movie roles themselves have not found love. She forgets that if the looseness depicted in such movies were the way to find love, the actresses themselves would have been loved but that is not the case; it is one boyfriend today, another tomorrow; they just don’t get married and even when they do it is to a man who allows them continue to kiss strange men on camera either because he does not love them or he is just a perverted slowpoke…..either way the “love” they depict evades them the same way the “lovers” day will be another failed attempt to find love
The reality on ground is that after hundreds of years of celebrating Valentine 79% of men in the US beat up their wives, a woman is brutalized every 18 seconds and in France where the face veil is banned, 2 million women face beating yearly. Yeah, pun intended on this last one!

3) SEXUAL PERVERSION

I know Christians who will not go to a Catholic Church even if their lives depended on it yet the rumour that there was a catholic Saint by name Valentine who deserved to be celebrated was taken as Gospel because they simply want to fornicate and will do anything to achieve that. If Christians who are not catholic wants to emulate anything from catholism why not Papacy? Why not holy communion? Why not the additional 7 books of the Bible? Why Valentine which the Catholics themselves do not even understand?

The answer to this question is very simple: we have a community of youth who takes fornication as a religious duty and the vagueness of the laws of the church with regards to fornication is not helping matters. Matter of fact we now hear that we are no longer under laws but “rhema” (whatever that means) so that the individual fornicates at will and only have to believe that some donkey years ago someone died for his sins

There are a number of outcomes when a society is sexually perverted: homosexuality, rape, marital discord and Valentine are just a few. When the National Assembly passed a Bill prohibiting homosexual marriage we felt it was a good thing because we did not really consider the implication which was that it was also a statement that it is up to the people and their representatives to say if they want homosexual marriage or not. The danger is that our answer is no today but with increasing pornography aided by broader bandwidth, lewd songs and “hot” movies, very soon our answer will be yes and democracy is the Government of the people by the people and for the people wherein God has no place so when the increasingly perverted population says yes to homosexual marriage we will have homosexual marriages.

After that it will be yes to bestiality so that a man will be allowed to have sex with his horse like in some states in America, after that it will be incest so that if a man “loves” his daughter he can marry her too!

When that time comes the most painful part will be that the youths of today will tell their children the disgusting lie that “our time was not like this”.
Deaf, Dumb and Blind they cannot see further than their nose!
“Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of that the hands of men earned. That He may make them taste a part of that which they have done so that they may return” (Qur’an 30:41)

CONCLUSION
To those who are celebrating valentine today we say to you; you’re sick or at best ignorant…GET A LIFE

Islam for Muslims / Valentine's Day: A Day Of Love Or A Day Of Lewdness? by abdussalam(m): 12:17pm On Feb 13, 2015
Before you dress up all red, carry that little present with red hearts on it, along with a red rose (maybe some red balloons too) and celebrate with your “valentine”, how about going through its origin? Can’t hurt, right?

HOW IT STARTED:
Valentine’s Day is a Roman festival, which continued to be celebrated until after the Romans became Christians. This festival became connected with the saint known as Valentine who was sentenced to death on 14 February 270 CE.

If you look into its history, this day takes its roots from one of the most unprincipled and disreputable pagan festivals – Lupercalia. This festival was held by the Romans in the honor of their god of fertility. “Purification” rites were held  and goats and dogs sacrificed and women were flogged with their hides, in the hope of “purifying” them and making them fertile.

Another tradition suggests, February was also sacred to Juno Februata, the goddess of febris (“fever”) of love, and of women and marriage. On February 14, small pieces of paper, each of which had the name of a teenaged girl written on it, were put into a container. Teenaged boys would then choose one billet at random. The boy and the girl whose name was drawn would become a “couple,” joining in erotic games at feasts and parties celebrated throughout Rome. After the festival, they would remain sexual partners for the rest of the year. This custom was observed in the Roman Empire for centuries.

Not the kind of romantic origin you expected, eh? In fact, quite disgusting! Many traditions suggest Mr. Valentine was actually looked down upon, for having multiple extra marital affairs.

THE ISLAMIC VIEWPOINT:

“If you want to destroy any nation without war, create adultery or nudity common in the young generation.” – Salahuddin Ayyubi

Valentine’s Day is not an innocent day of celebrating love, rather it is promoting a culture which is resulting in increased divorce rates, broken homes and extra marital affairs.

Founder and CEO of Avvo, Mark Britton, said: “Over the past two years we’ve seen an average increase of 40 percent in the number of requests for divorce lawyers around Valentine’s Day, compared to the previous six months. Furthermore, the number of questions about divorce has soared 36 per cent during that same time. Indeed, there’s definitely a major Valentine’s spike when it comes to divorce.”

It is promoting loss of modesty among our youth at an alarming speed. People cheat on their spouses, all in the name of the day of “love”. Should real love result in divorces or heart breaks? In broken families? Is it worth being called love? Or should be it be called a day of uncontrolled lust or a day of breaking families, instead?
If “be my Valentine” is said to a relationship outside marriage, then it’s downright immoral and if your excuse is to use it on your spouse, then my advice is: use such expressions 24/7 around your spouse and not just for a day.

All this pomp and show in the name of a man who is titled as a Saint! SAINT VALENTINE! Are saints supposed to be like this?

People might ask you to follow the fashion, even if it’s blatant disobedience to the Creator. They’ll ask you to do what the movies and the mags say: bid goodbye to morality. You are forced into thinking that you free.
Are you really free? Or are you actually enslaved? We don’t want this version of freedom.

Let’s be slaves not to the societal constructs, not to the mere ideas of men, not to the materialistic morality, but to Allah , our Creator, when you realize your position as a slave and His as the Master and when you stop taking orders from your nafs. It takes a real painful revolution within yourself. But once you go through it and overcome the evil within you, you are free. Because freedom is not in nudity or in chatting with cute girls – it is slavery. True freedom is only when you submit to your Creator.

So people! Celebrating Valentine’s Day is not permissible for a number of reasons.

Firstly: It is not permissible to celebrate these innovated festivals, because it is an innovation for which there is no basis in Islam. It comes under the heading of the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah , according to which the Prophet said: “Whoever introduces anything into this matter of ours that is not part of it will have it rejected.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

Secondly: It involves imitating the kuffaar and copying them by venerating that which they venerate and respecting their festivals and rituals. By the way, “Hey, it’s just for fun” does not validate it. In the hadeeth it says: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 3512; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 2691.

Thirdly: It results in evils and haraam things such as wasting time, singing, music, extravagance, unveiling, wanton display, men mixing with women, women appearing before men other than their mahrams, and promoting the “lust outside marriage” culture, which our religion looks down upon. Seek the many halal forms of love and halal forms of fun out there!
“And come not near to unlawful sex. Verily, it is a Faahishah (i.e. anything that transgresses its limits: a great sin), and an evil way” [al-Isra’ 17:22]

FINAL COMMENTS:

The media and the billboards are just pumping you up, as part of their “Let’s Attract-More-Customers” plan. More discount deals, more decorations and delicious cup cakes – it’s called consumerism. So don’t be swept away with the tide. Know your values and stand up for them!
Make sure you see the abhorrent nature of this day and save yourselves and your families from secretly becoming someone’s Valentine.

We are a multi-faceted people.
We are Nigerians.

Go to Sabon Gari in Kano: Igbos have their homes there.
Go to Kpakungu in Minna: Yorubas are at home there.
Go to Idi-Araba in Lagos: Hausas have their homes there.
Go to Lafiagi in Lagos Island: The Nupe (Tapa) see there as their home.

In every state in Nigeria, there is a 'Sabon Gari'. You might call them settlers but they are part of your family now. They speak your language. They eat your food. They share the same dressing with you. They are at home with you.
Don't let politicians turn us against one another.

Politics / Islamic Development Bank (IDB) And The Fallacy Of Islamising Nigeria by abdussalam(m): 11:25am On Feb 03, 2015
Many people talk ignorantly about Nigeria's membership of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as an attempt to Islamise Nigeria. I had once posted a clarification on that and would like to reiterate that Nigeria's membership is for the good of Nigerians.

Know that the Islamic Development Bank is a financial organ of the OIC. To access funding from the IDB, it is required that countries are member-nations of the OIC. Nigeria has been a member of the OIC for over 30 years and has immensely benefited from being a member.

The IDB offers interest-free loans to nations unlike other multilateral development banks. This removes the burden of servicing debts from such nations.
No doubt, that the IDB operates in line with Islamic guidance and thus doesn't fund projects forbidden by Islamic tenets (alcohol, gambling, etc). It is on record that during the last global financial meltdown, ONLY the IDB and those who FULLY adopted the Islamic banking system were NOT AFFECTED.

Successive governments in Nigeria had continued to patronise the bank. The Jonathan administration is no exception. In a 2012 report by Daily Trust, I got it that the bank injected $4bn into the Nigerian economy for the next 3 years (2012-2015). Before then, it had committed about $470 million (N72.9 billion) in project and trade financing operations in various sectors of the Nigerian economy.

At the signing of the pact with the Nigerian government then, the President of the IDB Group, Dr. Ahmad Mohamed Ali, used the opportunity provided by the forum to disabuse the minds of Nigeria about the Islamic banking system.

He said: “The Islamic Development Banking Group is not a religious institution. It is a multilateral development finance institution similar to the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank.

“Like those institutions, the Islamic Development Bank seeks to promote the socio-economic development of its member countries by providing financing and technical support to critical priority development projects.

The difference from other institutions is that the modes of IDB financing are based on Islamic finance principles which are based on the productive relationship between financial assets and real economic development aspirations.”

He added: “Unlike the other multilateral development banks, the IDB does not deal with interest. Another distinctive feature of the IDB is that the membership of the IDB is composed entirely of developing countries, all in the Southern hemisphere countries which have broadly similar constraints and development challenges. In its lending activities, the IDB promotes solidarity among its member countries.”

He listed some of the many intervention projects the bank was undertaking in Nigeria to include as the National Programme for Food Security, Zungeru dam project, Mambilla hydroelectric dam project, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway project, National Railway Rehabilitation project and the Shagamu-Benin dual carriage project.

Ali stressed that the IDB had been rated Triple-A by the world’s leading rating agencies for almost the past ten consecutive years, before, during and after global financial crisis.

So, stop spreading the falsehood that Nigeria's membership of the OIC is an attempt to Islamise the country.

NYSC / 11 Security Tips For Corp Members Conducting The 2015 Elections by abdussalam(m): 7:30pm On Jan 27, 2015
1. Buy sufficient airtime on your phone and ensure you keep your phone charged at all point in time. An internet connected phone should be handy too.

2. Always look out for the escape routes at every assembly you find yourself at this period; RAC Center, Collation Center, Polling Unit or wherever.

3. Endeavor to have the Head of DSS and Police's phone numbers in your LGA. This can be found in your camp orientation booklet or your LGI. Save their numbers on your speed dial list with those of your parents/guardian.

4. Stay at ALERT both mentally, physically and spiritually. There's no useless information, signal, signage or signpost at this point in time.

5. Know the basics of the host language. Things like: "Where is the nearest police station/barracks?", "Beat her", Kill him", "Carry her", "Stab him" and some other
abusive/instigating expressions.

6. NEVER attempt to rig in favor of any party. Some parties might attempt to rig. Your hand in it could result in mob action that could take your life.

7. If you observe too much hostility before the election in your area, DON'T PARTAKE. You spent more money to train yourself in school than what INEC would pay. The 2011 stories are still fresh in memory.

8. Keep calm at all times when addressing locals, especially when they don't understand your language. Your 'shout' might sound abusive to them. Get an interpreter and always obtain his cooperation. His advice as one who knows the locality would be handy.

9. Some voters would want to flout electoral rules like; refusing to come at the right time for accreditation, coming an old voter's card, coming more than once to vote and using more than one PVC. Stand by the law is the best. If you have to give in, make sure ALL party agents agree. Address the issues at your own discretion keeping your safety in mind.

10. If you sense trouble immediately after the election, leave the corpers lodge for a safer place like the barracks, palace of traditional rulers, police station or especially where you're not known to be a corp member. Places where many corp members reside together are likely targets in times of violence.

11. These tips aren't particular to a specific part of the country. We've all heard different threats to peace in the press. Ignore them at your own peril.

Pass this on to other Corp Members!

Education / 3 Lessons From The Buhari Certificate Saga For Youths by abdussalam(m): 8:58am On Jan 23, 2015
As the February General Elections draws nearer, one of the issues that had attracted enormous attention from the public was the alleged non-existence of General Muhammadu Buhari’s Senior School Certificate.

Buhari is the Presidential Candidate of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in the polls. The ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had accused the General of refusing to fulfill that minimum requirement to get elected. It took a lot of media attention until the General finally addressed the press on the issue last Wednesday.

There are some lessons youths need to imbibe from the saga. We have a long time ahead, if God wills. Though the saga may have become a joke among the populace, let’s take some cue from it. It is something which everyone should reflect on personally.

3 LESSONS FROM THE BUHARI CERTIFICATE SAGA FOR YOUTHS
KEEP YOUR DOCUMENTS SAFE

You don’t know when any of your documents would be required to be presented in future. So, keep your documents safe always. This reminds me of a recent report about of a ninety year old man asked to bring his appointment letter of 1950 in order to be paid his pension. That’s almost the case here.

Though Buhari had his school certificate, it was obviously not presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). That gave room for those aware of the anomaly to make some mountain out it. Reports that he had sworn to an affidavit regarding the missing documents didn’t stop the rants about the matter. INEC might have admitted the affidavit as a legal document but that situation would have been prevented if the certificate was kept safe.

Irrespective of whether it’s a certificate, receipt or letter, your document is your reference point. Try keeping it safe from damage, theft and fire. You can keep your documents safe by laminating them or keeping them in a safe/bank. Scanning them and having them stored on your hard drive/online (your email, google drive) wouldn’t bad an option too. You know how much you value your jewellery? Your documents are more valuable than your jewellery. You can’t afford to lose them.

REPLACE YOUR MISSING DOCUMENTS
After much effort to at keeping your documents safe, something could still go awry. Your safe could get ravaged by some negative elements and your documents get stolen or damaged. You’ll have no choice but to replace them.

Buhari’s missing documents accounted for him swearing an affidavit. He was certain that the copies of his documents were with the Nigerian Army. His party had earlier said that those documents got missing after the 1985 military coup when his house was ransacked by soldiers. He could have requested copies of those documents from the relevant offices and they wouldn’t hesitate to provide something in lieu of the documents.

When next your documents get missing or damaged, get an affidavit and a police report to legally lay claim to that. Write to the office in charge of documentation to provide another document that could stand for the missing one. For example, where it’s your university certificate, you’ll write a later to the Registrar of your school attaching the affidavit or police report as they may require and he would provide you a replacement.

BE WELL KNOWN AMONG YOUR PEERS
You’ve got to be known for something positive among your peers. Don’t ever think you can get away with some misbehaviour forever. Your character today could haunt you in the nearest future. Those you once spited could be in a position to bring you down in future.

One of the testimonies to Buhari’s legal claims was that he wasn’t a back bencher. His contemporaries could attest to knowing him. He wasn’t one of those who just added to the population of the mass. He was even the Head Boy in his secondary school years.

You don’t have to hold an elective position to be known. Be a responsible and diligent person wherever you find yourself. Make valuable contributions where you can and avoid fomenting trouble. Together we shall reach for greater frontiers.

What other lesson can we learn from the saga?

Politics / Re: Why The Alfas Or Imams Are Not Prophesising Unlike The Pastors? by abdussalam(m): 8:15am On Jan 19, 2015
Seeing the future is in the knowledge of the hidden. It is not in the place of a Muslim to visit, listen to or believe people who do this. So, there's no basis for a Muslim to be involved in soothsaying.

What about those non-Muslims bombed, killed in Rivers and Akwa Ibom for supporting Buhari? Let's preach politics without bitterness jare! This isn't news.

Politics / Re: President Goodluck Jonathan Built The Road To Buhari's Village (pictures) by abdussalam(m): 6:37am On Jan 19, 2015
Katsina State was created in 1996. So, what's the fuse about Buhari not building a university in it? Was he the one in government all the while? Meanwhile, PTF funds were utilized in achieving the equiping of schools nationwide and provision of educational materials among other things. If it's about the road, isn't its construction a responsibility of government in the first place? I doubt it's even a federal road. See how narrow it is. So what would you say when others reference Buhari's construction of the three refineries, two of which are in Jonathan's region?

Education / Facts About Getting Private Teaching Jobs by abdussalam(m): 5:20am On Jan 18, 2015

How do you get a private teaching job? Where do you get one? Whom do you teach? What can you teach? These are questions probably boggling your minds. The challenge of getting one is what we are about delving into.

Do you want to know more about getting a home teaching job? Read on!

FACTS ABOUT GETTING PRIVATE TEACHING JOBS

WHO?

It is a venture majorly recommended for students in tertiary institutions, corps members, teachers and other people of intellect to dwell on. While waiting after graduating, private teaching is one of the things you could do.

WHY?

Private teaching is for you because you care about having additional stream of income, saving money or refreshning your knowledge.

WHEN?

Home teaching is a venture you can do full-time or part-time, depending on how you take things. It just has to do with the agreement between your client and you.

WHERE?

You teach at the comfort you so wish. It could be at home, in your office or online. All that matters is that you are getting some fulfilment from doing it.

HOW?

BE A GOOD STUDENT

“You can’t give what you don’t have”, says an Arabian Proverb. For you to be in for the task of teaching others, you have to be knowledgeable about the subject. A mastery of the subject to be taught is very important to prove your competence in the art. If you don’t know what you want to teach, you wouldn’t be making any impact.

BE KNOWN FOR INTELLECTUALISM

There are certain times we overlook some situations as a mere joke. It’s time to get serious friend. You don’t know who is observing you. Whenever you engage in argument with others, base it on facts, not unfounded sentiments. The problem people have with showing what they know could pit them in the wrong side against other people some other time. I know of a number of folks who got opportunities through the way they contribute to discourse. It’s time you started going intellectual and stop rabble rousing.

HAVE AN AREA OF SPECIALISATION

Mr Sanda is a brilliant scholar. He can take English, Mathematics and any other subject at any level. That’s interesting! Help me tell him that doing that doesn’t bring the best out of him. If he is focused on a specific subject, he would see himself learning, unlearning and relearning at the best pace he can ever imagine. A choice of specialisation should be based on what you know how to teach best. Your familiarity with it most of the times would sell you off as a genius.

BE VERSED IN MAJOR SUBJECT AREAS

This actually applies in a world where no one really needs a private lesson on ‘minor’ subjects. It is the knowledge of ‘majors’ that count. English Language, Mathematics, a Science subject, a social science subject and an indigenous language are basic requirements at the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in Nigeria. For entry into tertiary education, high grades in the Use of English and three other subjects relating to the prospective course of study is required. Equip yourself with knowledge in these key areas.

COURSE OF STUDY DOESN’T MATTER

If you are good at something, why not develop yourself in it? Your present course of study is no barrier. No one is really interested in it but what you have to offer.  You don’t need to be in the sciences to teach some primary school student mathematics. Although clients most likely prefer specialists to teach their wards, teaching jobs are still open to other folks who have got something upstairs. Are you game?

TELL OTHERS WHAT YOU CAN DO

The best place to find one is around you. I mean where you reside or work. The people you relate with are possibly your best shot at getting a private teaching offer. Start your search for clients from among people within your neighbourhood. Focus more on students in the terminal levels of their education (Basic 4-6, Basic 8-9, SS2-3). They are the likeliest students. Colleagues at the workplace, parents, and every other person who know how educated you are could be able to connect you to a private teaching job.

SET UP A PRIVATE TEACHING BUSINESS OUTFIT

Establishing a business outfit that recruits teachers for private teaching service might be the best bet for you if you want more than just teaching a child. XYZ Educational Services would be making money in two ways – referring and serving. In one way, you’re connecting interested private teachers to interested parents/guardians. In another, you win yourself some clients. You either earn a commission on each teacher working through your teaching outfit or a full payment for such service you personally handle. Isn’t that beautiful?

ADVERTISE ONLINE

Show off what you do to friends and every other person online. If you’ve chosen to put up the advert under a business brand, that’s pretty fine. Choosing to just write a simple statement “Contact 0803333333 if you need a physics teacher” wouldn’t be a bad idea too. Turn your online ‘friends’ to clients in your own interest. There are a few free advertising mediums such as the OLX and VConnect where people can show what they do without paying for ad spaces. Visit either site, see preceding adverts there and use them as guides in forming your own.

I didn't have to spend my allawee except for buying some souvenir, paying platoon and MCAN dues at the camp. I still had up to 14k left thereafter. Immediately after leaving camp, the money was deposited into my account and was to be later channeled into some capacity building programmes. Till now, I'm still able to save up an average of 15k monthly. (I created other means of sustenance in my new environment.)
