Nairaland / General / “bafarawa: True Northerner With Political Art Of Sardauna” – Comr. Sen. Yusuf Sa by abouyusuf: 2:13am On Mar 26, 2017
He is Dr. Alh. Attahiru Bafarawa, the first black man in imams’ row in ka’abah where someone like I and you are hoping to visit even for once not talking of being in the first row, the only first governor who for once never slept in a government house for period of eight years.
The only Northerner that cares solely for northerners more than he cares for himself, it was him, the only person that supported President Muhammadu Buhari and fortified him politically under the banner of ANPP in 2003 when many northern elites rejected him. I believe this was done to produce a leader who could recue the northern region from the point of fragmentation.
Many at times when I review Bafarawa’s profile, I wonder if people like him do still exist! He is a radical who in spite of the political differences always stands firmly to defend the interest of the northern region and the nation at large.
Dr. bafarawa has many achievements, this includes, initiating the formation of first governors forum, coordinating the formation of merga party which was unproductively accomplished (in favor of north), and drafting of APC constitution was also done in his residence. It is the same Bafarawa that delivered a lecture themed “Northern Political agenda – The way forward” year 2002, at Kaduna organized by Northern consultative forum where he has immensely shown much concern and care for northern development. What a jingoistic citizen! In fact Bafarawa is not only a northern elite but a nation elite.
Despite being under trial Bafarawa was quoted saying “In spite of our ongoing trial by the court in relation to the arms deal allegations, I still support Buhari’s anti-corruption war. Nigerians should support the President’s efforts to tame the social monster, corruption as it stalls the even socio-economic development of the nation. “I also fought corruption to a standstill when I was a governor in Sokoto State between 1999 and 2007. That was why I was able to leave over N12 billion in the coffers of the state when I left office in 2007. I have taken the matter as an act of God and I am happy that Allah has enabled me to take it as such.
Refer: Bafarawa Says He Supports PMB's Anti-corruption War
https://www.naij.com/682352-dasukigate-bafarawa-sends-message-president-buhari.html

It is still the same Bafarawa that wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari seeking audience to discuss way forward for Nigeria, not considering being under trial under the leadership of the current administration.
In quote:
“I’ve written several letters to President Buhari, seeking to have an audience with him on the way forward but hremains indifferent in granting me the opportunity.”
He said that the problems afflicting Nigeria transcended political boundaries, addding that Buhari must listen to wise counsel to unchain Nigerians from the clutches of deprivation.
Refer: Buhari has failed — Bafarawa
https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/politics/buhari-has-failed-bafarawa/163109.html
With these! I still wonder why Bafarawa who happens to be the only northern golden voice who in spite all the political stalemates and interest stood firmly to defend the northern region and Nigeria at large.
This wasn’t the initial aim for this write up, but it seem I should put off my pen and let you judge.
Here I ask,
If a leader like Bafarawa with all the qualities of leadership could be condemned, then who left in the north?
Should we put off our support and watch the northern elite being continuously humiliated or what?
If women from the southern part of Nigeria could protest in support of Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, despite all the allegations, then you what you offered for your leader who wants bright future for you and your family?

http://www.sharpedgenews.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=2726:pro-diezani-protesters-storm-nnpc-headquarters&Itemid=692

Yaduma was quoted saying:
“We are here to tell Nigerians that the accusations that are being leveled against Mrs. Alison-Madueke are not true. She has not done anything that should warrant the pressure being put on her.
“Please, she should be left alone to continue her work of reforming the petroleum sector. The accusations are not correct because to the best of our knowledge, we have not seen anything wrong in her conduct.
“She has not stolen or mismanaged Nigeria’s money. We want her to continue as minister and we want the National Assembly to stop their continuous harassment of the minister. People continue to bring up false allegations against the minister just because she is a woman,”

I know to say the truth is bitter, but we must learn to say the truth even if that could cause our lives.

Nairaland / General / “Dino Melaye With Nigerian Political Witches” Geography Pres. Yusuf Saddam Saleh by abouyusuf: 1:38am On Mar 24, 2017
It is quite unfortunate that people are now using educational certificates to horrify and blackmail their associates for political reasons.
Before the emergence of our dear president Muhammad Buhari, many allegations were made by even high government profiles that he has no secondary school certificate but happily after due scrutinisation it was proven otherwise to their allegation.
Today it has come to the one of the most controversial Sen. Dino Melaye, then who knows who would be next tomorrow? May be Prof. Osinbajo. Please refer:
BREAKING: Dino Melaye in messy certificate scandal, school says he did not graduate
https://naij.com/1094604-senator-dino-melaye-certificate-scandal.html
I do not know which school Sahara Reporters are categorically referring us to! If it is Ahmadu Bello University, then you should better know that A.B.U is not and was never a playground where one could acquire certificate without been worth of it. A.B.U do not only award certificate in learning but both in character.
Saying “Dino Melaye in messy certificate scandal, school says he did not graduate” is same as disqualifying the institution from awarding degree program, and also downgrading the standard of National Universities Commission (NUC).
“The lecturers from the institution confirmed that Melaye bribed his HOD”
Please Sahara reporters, who are these lecturers?
Why now not before when he was nobody?
““At least three exam officers at ABU, Zaria insists that @dino_melaye never graduated from geography department, DG DSS alerted but covered it up,” the report said.
Who are these three exam officers?
How did you know that DG DSS covered it up, and does he uncovered it now?
Could a person without first degree pursue second degree talk more of 7th degree?Last two weeks back, I and some of my cabinet members were with Sen. Dino Melaye at Social Science where he is currently attending lectures for his 7th degree, discussing on holding “A GRAND HOME WELCOMING” for him.
I can only say “we are been played again by same political witches that witch hunted Pesident Buhari”
To my own understanding this is not a matter that only concerns Sen. Dino Melaye but all patriotic ABUSITES and Nigerian at large, for, if care is not well taking, then Sahara reporters and it associates could disqualify all of our universities.
This is also telling us that Nigerian politics has no proper dimension, once one could talk not in line with what is require by some political icons, then that turns to be a sin and we would be used to spread the political propaganda not knowing the rationale behind it.
Sen. Dino Melaye is a Gradute of A.B.U from Geography department.
Therefore at this very juncture, I am calling political witches and their associates to produce evidence of their saying or render an unreserved apology for fooling and scandalizing the A.B.U and her product.
God Bless A.B.U
God Bless Nigeria, and
God Bless you all.

Nairaland / General / ABU Makes Discovery In Petrochemicals, Develops Refining Material by abouyusuf: 10:33am On Jul 18, 2016
The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has disclosed that it has recorded major breakthroughs following researches it carried out in petrochemicals and automobile engineering.

The vice chancellor of the university, Prof Ibrahim Garba, who revealed this when he featured on the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja, yesterday, said the university, with the assistance of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), successfully developed a petroleum refining material called zeolite, using a kind of clay called kaolin.

According to him, zeolite, which is a natural mineral, can be used in refining petroleum products in the country.

He, however, decried that the mineral was not available in commercial quantity in the country.

“The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has commissioned a research to develop one kind of material that is used in petroleum refining which is called zeolite – and there are two types.

“They found that if we can convert certain minerals to zeolite it will help. This research has succeeded in converting a clay mineral which is called kaolin to two types of zeolite which can be applicable to petroleum refining.

“The university has even received a patent certificate from former President Goodluck Jonathan. It is now ready to go into semi commercialisation to produce it in large quantities and that has been successful.

“PTDF is also ready to join hands with the Raw Materials Research and Development Council ((RMRDC) to take it to commercial scale,’’ he said

Garba also stated that ABU had developed a mini-refinery in its Chemical Engineering Department to train prospective engineers in the practical aspect of petrochemical engineering.

According to him, the mini-refinery, which refines one barrel of crude oil per day, was built with the support of RMRDC.

The vice chancellor said: “We also have what we call the petroleum or petrochemical mini-refinery. We developed a small refinery that will refine one barrel of crude oil a day.

“We do not intend to refine petroleum for our own consumption, but because we have a chemical engineering department, we train engineers that would go into the industry,” he said.

Explaining why the university went into such a venture, he said: “We found that, in this part of the country, there are not many oil facilities. We found that if we develop this mini-refinery, our students, when they are really taking their degrees, should be able to know the entire working of a refinery.

“It is quite a big edifice that we built and that also came with the support of RMRDC, and it is doing very well.’’

The vice chancellor said the institution had also produced an eco-marathon car through a contest organised by Shell, globally. He challenged universities in the country to produce vehicles that are fuel efficient.

Garba further disclosed that ABU won two awards with its Eco-Marathon Car, adding that both universities of Lagos and Benin participated in the two contests in which ABU’s car came tops.

“There is also another research in the engineering department whereby we produced what we call the ABU Eco-marathon car. So, ABU has developed one. We participated in two events and we won both.

“University of Lagos tried and came close and University of Benin also, but I think ABU is the one that has won the award,’’ he said.

Nairaland / General / Arms Deal: Panel Investigates Buhari’s Minister, Ex-service Chief, Dambazau by abouyusuf: 10:15am On Jul 18, 2016
The 13-man Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment Procurement (CADEP) set up to probe arms procurement contracts between 2007 and 2015, is now set to quiz the Minister of Interior, Lt-Gen. Abdurahman Dambazau (rtd), according to reports.

The panel will, today, begin sitting to scrutinise procurement papers in the Nigerian Navy between 2007 and 2015, as well as probe arms purchase in the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) between 2007 and 2010.

There have been strident calls from individuals and groups for the probe of Dambazau, who served as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) between August 2008 and September 2010.

In fact, it was alleged that the Interior Minister had been working tooth and nail to suppress the arms panel report, before its release last week Thursday.

Also to appear before the Air Vice Marshal Jon Ode (rtd)-led panel, are three former Chiefs of Defence Staff (CDS) – Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petinrin (rtd), Admiral Ola S. Ibrahim and Air Chief Marshal Paul Dike (rtd). All the former Chiefs of Naval Staff from 2007 to 2015 – Vice Admirals G.T.A. Adekeye, I.I. Ibrahim, D.J. Ezeoba and U.O. Jibrin – are also to appear before the panel. Dambazau, Petinrin, Ibrahim, Dike, Ezeoba and others will be asked to explain contracts awarded during their respective tenures as COAS and Chief of Naval Staff (CNS).

It was gathered from highly placed military sources that General Owoye Azazi (rtd) and Lt-Gen. Luka Yusuf (rtd), who had served as CDS and COAS, respectively, would have appeared before the panel, were they not late.

“I can confirm to you that the Audit Panel, which had been on a 10-day break, will reconvene this week, to commence work with immediate effect.”

Among those to appear in this final batch are Dambazau, Air Force chiefs between 2007 and 2011, and Naval chiefs from 2007 to 2015.

“They will all be confronted with documents regarding contracts and procurement transactions during their tenures,” the source said.

This is as it was further learnt that an ex-COAS, Lt-Gen. Azubike Ihejirika (rtd) and his predecessor, Lt.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah (rtd), may be interrogated by a special team of operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) this week.

The arms panel had in a report on the procurement of the Nigerian Army released last week Thursday, indicted 54 individuals and companies.

One of the sources, who spoke in confidence, said palpable tension may have gripped senior military officers, who held some strategic positions during the tenures of the former Service Chiefs scheduled to face the panel this week, all things being equal.

Investigation revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari had met with members of the panel, where he extended the period of their assignment, gave them a new terms of reference, and charged them to remain firm and focused in the audit task.

Also to face scrutiny, are former officials in the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Ministry of Defence (MOD), as well as the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).

Giving some details, the source disclosed that one of the service chiefs was fingered in the construction of a military hospital in a Northern state. The hospital was said to have served as a conduit through which billions of naira was allegedly syphoned.

The current COAS, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai, was quizzed by the panel, though nothing was said to have been established against him.

Speaking against the backdrop of Ihejirika and Minimah’s indictment, another source hinted that: ”Both former Army Chiefs, including 52 others, have had their international passports impounded.

“I also heard that both men are under surveillance, as the EFCC sets out on a further investigation.” Meanwhile, indications have emerged that the 13-man panel may be confronted with challenges of gathering documents and information, owing to the arrest and detention of Air Commodore Muhammed Umar (rtd).

“The arrest of retired Air Commodore Umar, may pose some challenge to information gathering. He was largely responsible for gathering of information, considering his vast networks and connections during the probe of procurements in the Army and Air Force,” the source hinted.

Umar, who is a member of the Ode Committee, was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) recently.

The newspaper was also told of a businessman, who had offered to return a huge sum of money he received from a former Naval chief, without commensurate execution of contracts.

It was learnt from informed sources that the man, who is said to be a close friend of the former Naval chief, had approached the panel, with a view to returning the said money, which he said he neither worked nor asked for.

One of the sources said that the panel, conscious of its terms of reference, which did not include receiving of funds, directed him to the EFCC.

“You know interesting discoveries were made by the panel. Do you know that in the course of our sittings, a civilian, who is a friend of a former Chief of Naval Staff, walked into the committee that he wanted to refund money the ex- Naval chief paid into his company’s account?

“The man said he did not do any work, but that the money was paid into his account on the instruction of his friend, the Naval chief.

“The committee said there was a procedure to follow, which required him to go and make the refund at the EFCC,” the source said.

A source close to the panel said that the panel is billed to invite the businessman to testify against the former naval chief.

Already, the 13-man panel has released reports on the Nigerian Air Force and Nigerian Army, wherein it indicted top senior serving and retired military officers, politicians, and firms.

Politics / Senate Describes Media's Report On Impeachment Plan As Rumour by abouyusuf: 8:50am On Jul 15, 2016
The spokesman for the Senate, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, in a statement on Thursday, July 14, that purported report was a "figment of the imagination of the writers."

”We expected the party to, at least, explore all the options open to it to verify that piece of fabrication which is only the figment of the imagination of the writers and their sponsors," Abdullahi said.

“It should be clear to the APC leadership that if there is any truth to that story, it should have been credited to a particular senator who was at the executive session.

“It is evident from our proceedings of yesterday (Wednesday) that the Senate itself was shocked that such a fabrication, which constitutes a breach of the privileges of the senators, was published and that was why we mandated our Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions to investigate the source and circumstances leading to the emergence of such a fabrication.

“We will like to assure the party that the Senate, as an institution, values the present democracy in our country and will not do anything that will undermine or weaken the system.”However, the National chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party's caretaker committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, had declined to comment on the impeachment issue, saying it was a situation embedded within the legislature.

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the probe of two former Chiefs of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika and Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah.

The two generals are among 54 persons to be investigated for their roles in the evolving arms scandals that saw billions of dollars meant for procurement of arms for the Nigerian military for the prosecution of war against Boko Haram diverted to private pockets.

President of the Presidential Committee on the Audit of Defence Equipment Procurement in the Armed Forces, AVM Jon Ode (Rtd) disclosed this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Thursday. The order followed the approval of the recommendations of the committee charged with investigating the Defence Equipment Procurement from 2007 to 2015, for further investigation of those involved, after the committee found a number of irregularities in the contract awards.

Politics / "The Rise And Fall Of Bukola Saraki...... by abouyusuf: 12:04pm On Sep 20, 2015
"The rise and fall of Bukola Saraki......
Saraki left the PDP for personal reasons not because he wanted CHANGE. This is evident in his behavior since APC became victorious. APC trusted Saraki, jilted Belgore just to please Saraki. APC asked both Belgore and Lai Mohammed to relinquish the state leadership to Saraki. While Lai choicelessly agreed, Belgore left APC because 'I can never be in the same party with Sraki talkless of him leading me' . Raji Fashola spoke and appealed to his bosom friend Belgore not to leave APC but the latter sought Fashola's understanding on the fact that Saraki is not a human being and that APC will regret having Saraki in its fold. APC openly celebrated Saraki. Saraki nominated every single political appointments in Kwara. He took over the structure of the APC in Kwara. APC narrowly won Kwara with just over 100k votes above the PDP. Race for Senate Leadership began. This slot would have naturally gone to the SE had Ngige or other experienced APC senatorial candidate won but APC NASS conflict's foundation was laid by the rejection of the party in the SE! Therefore, 3 major lucky contenders were jostling for the Senate President position. Lawan from NE, Saraki and Akume from NS all wanted to fill the vacuum created by the SE. Buhari and APC preferred Lawan from the NE instead of Tinubu's friend Akume and Atiku's choice Saraki. Tinubu being a smart man quickly asked his friend Akume to step down for the Party's and President's choice Lawan. Akume, another reasonable politician agreed!
Tinubu is not just a driver, he also know when to accelerate and when to march the brake!!!!!! Atiku and Saraki kept on accelerating even when it was obvious that the duo have approached the zebra crossing!!! A warrior that knows how to fight that does not know how to run when necessary will eventually perish in the battlefield! Saraki and his pushers became arrogant and resolute to disgrace the APC and the President. All appeals by leaders of their party did not hold water. Saraki said he wanted due process, therefore, the party organized a primary election to please him.Saraki lost the election and instead of staying within his team and agree with the APC Senators decision, he betrayed the APC and teamed up with the PDP to steal the hard earned victory of the APC through the back door. He wanted SP even if heavens will fall. He eventually stole it while 95% of his colleagues were away, he joined the PDP to ridicule CHANGE. He did not stop there, he made the PDP DSP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ha! What wickedness What a deadly traitor?? The party was battling with the humble pie and sought further reconciliation by asking Saraki to give other leadership positions left to its preferred choices, at least to calm nerves and save the party from national disgrace. But Saraki once again injured the party and announced his own preferred choices behaving like 'IGE ADUBI' who cares less whether or not his mother or father died on the day of his birth! The intention of Saraki became very clear to APC. He wants APC to fail, disgraced and destroyed,he has gone back to his former husband PDP. But the concern of Buhari is different from the APC's. Buhari wants to eradicate corruption but how can Kwara Corruption King lead from the senate Number one priority of Buhari administration has been ambushed by thieves from the NASS. Buhari, a soldier and a war tested veteran will not give up the fight to eradicate corruption in Nigeria. His preference for Lawan has nothing to do with politics but with policies! Saraki obviously has constituted himself to be a clog in the wheels of CHANGE. He has become the arrow head of Business as Usual in a government of CHANGE! Therefore his book of remembrance was opened. His judgement became expedient.Since he wanted to be one of leaders in the government of Change, he must be thoroughly searched. Buhari the first leader has been searched....!!!"

Politics / US Jails Clerk For Declining Same Sex Marriage Licenses by abouyusuf: 10:13pm On Sep 03, 2015
A county clerk was sent to jail for contempt Thursday after insisting that her “conscience will not allow” her to follow a federal judge’s orders to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.

“God’s moral law conflicts with my job duties,” Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis told US District Judge David Bunning. “You can’t be separated from something that’s in your heart and in your soul.”

The judge said she left him with no alternative but to jail her, since fines alone would not change her mind. A deputy escorted her out of the courtroom, although not in handcuffs, to be turned over to the custody of federal marshals.

“Her good faith belief is simply not a viable defense,” Bunning said, noting that allowing an individual’s beliefs to supersede the court’s authority would set a dangerous precedent.

“I myself have genuinely held religious beliefs,” the judge said, but “I took an oath.”

Crime / What Hackers Want More Than Your Credit Card Number by abouyusuf: 3:57am On Sep 02, 2015
Account takeover fraud — which occurs when a cybercriminal gains unauthorized access to an online account — is growing rapidly, a new analysis by a major Canadian cybersecurity company shows.

Vancouver, British Columbia-based NuData Security, which predicts and prevents online fraud, analyzed more than 15.7 million login interactions from May through June and identified 882,340 as high risk or potential account takeover attempts.

"Account takeover is the new credit card fraud," says Ryan Wilk, the company's director of customer success.

The most common method of account takeover, he says, begins with obtaining a list of user names and passwords.

New on the Black Market

"Fraudsters employ a variety of techniques to obtain the personal and financial information typically needed to take control of an existing account," Wilk says. "This can be as simple as Dumpster diving and looking through people's mail to purchasing packages of Fullz on the Web black market."

In Dumpster diving, a hacker obtains data about a user, so the hacker can impersonate the user and gain access to the user's profiles or other restricted areas of the Internet. Fullz is a slang term used by hackers and data resellers for full packages of individuals' identifying information, which may include a person's name, Social Security number, birth date, account numbers and other data.

AAdPReq.imgNearly 60% of more than 500 million online account creations NuData Security analyzed from May through July "were flagged as high risk or fraudulent." That percentage is a huge increase from 28% flagged as high risk or fraudulent from February through April.

An account creation is the act of opening a new account such as establishing a new user profile and an account on Amazon.com or eBay.

Statistics Point to New Threat

"We've seen that account creation fraud has increased by more than 100% since February 2015," Wilk says. "These cybercriminals or bad actors are finding new ways to conceal their location. They are moving quickly from one IP address to another to steal valid credit card accounts, as opposed to cycling through hijacked credit card information based on lists stolen from databases."

Nearly half of all account registration fraud attempted in May involved creating false accounts to deliver false product ratings, NuData Security's analysis shows.

"While review fraud is on the rise, the techniques are getting more sophisticated, and the number was slightly higher than anticipated," Wilk says.

"Credit card fraud is passé, and account takeover is the new credit card fraud," he says. "Much like a virus reacts to a vaccine, hackers develop new ways to penetrate security systems as the old methods become ineffective. Shifting tactics is just one way hackers have become more sophisticated in their efforts to stay ahead of detection efforts."

Fraudsters are moving beyond payment card details, Wilk says, and are instead targeting data such as Social Security numbers, addresses and bank account information.

"The more information criminals collect from an individual, the easier it is for them to actually commit fraud using that info," he says. "That's why the recent Office of Personnel Management breach (in which cybercriminals stole information about more than 20 million federal employees, contractors and others) was particularly concerning. The bad actors look for the path of least resistance and are becoming more sophisticated daily."

Detecting the source of a cyberattack can be difficult because cybercriminals can launch online assaults from infected computers worldwide, Wilk says. From May through July, most attacks observed by NuData Security originated in China and the United States, he says. Other countries from which a large amount of "malicious behavior" originated were Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Brazil.

"The U.S. is home to members of some of the world's most notorious hacker groups, including Anonymous and AntiSec," Wilk says. "China has a sophisticated network of hackers. Some are connected to the China's military, though the extent is unknown, and the government and officials continue to deny China's involvement."

Developing countries' bad behavior can be attributed to "an overabundance of technologically trained young people with low-paying jobs," he says.

Businesses should protect themselves from fraudsters by implementing user behavioral analytics to help verify valid users, Wilk says. "By implementing user behavior analytics, fraud can be detected and predicted before it causes damage to a business."

[Editor's Note: Detection is the first step to stopping new account fraud or identity theft. You should check your financial accounts regularly for signs of fraud. You can also keep an eye on your credit reports and scores for signs of fraud. ]

Politics / President Buhari Promises Job Creation While Celebrating World Youth Day by abouyusuf: 12:05am On Aug 13, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday reiterated his commitment to provide the necessary infrastructures that would create employment for youths in Nigeria.gafd

Buhari described unemployment as one of the major challenges facing Nigeria and the African continent as many graduates still remain unemployed.

Speaking at an event organized by the Ministry of Youth Development to mark 2015 World Youth Day with the theme “Civic Engagement”, Buhari, however, appealed to the youth to be patient with his government.

He said, “Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, you may wish to note that Africa is the most ‘youthful’ continent in the world. According to the figures I have been presented with, at least 20 percent of the continent’s population of 1.2 billion is between the age bracket of 15 – 24 years, with about 42% below 15 years of age. As the rest of the world gets older, Africa is getting younger. This is neither a good thing nor a bad thing. It all depends on what we make of it.

“Therefore, one of the greatest challenges facing governments and policy makers in Africa today is how to provide opportunities and meet the needs of young people, the vast majority of whom need to be empowered to enable them to lead decent lives and contribute their quota to the socio economic and political development of their countries.

“Correctly harnessed, this tremendous labour force could propel us to take a quantum leap in developing our infrastructure so that Nigeria can join the 21st Century.

“Some of you may recall that African leaders, at the Malabo 2011Summit, committed themselves to providing employment, whether directly or indirectly, for at least 3% of its unemployed young people every year. For us, the meeting in Malabo 2011, marked another turning point in the continent’s quest for development. The summit adopted that all member States should advance the youth agenda and adopt policies and mechanisms towards the creation of safe, decent and competitive employment opportunities.

“This would be achieved by accelerating the implementation of the Youth Decade Plan of Action (2009 – 2018) and the Ouagadougou 2004 Plan of Action on Employment Promotion and Poverty Alleviation. African leaders have since stepped up efforts to give voice, visibility and platforms to the youth to advocate for more investments in their future.

“It is, however, an issue of serious concern that in Nigeria, so far, economic growth has not translated into commensurate and improved social outcomes, especially for our 60 million young people who made up the majority of the population. Consequently our youth migrate from rural to urban areas and from this country to other countries across borders, in search of greener pastures.

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen and my beloved youth, I want to assure you that the new Administration will place high premium in tackling challenges facing the youth sector.

“According to the National Bureau of Statistics, unemployment remains a major concern in Nigeria, with rates rising from 6.4% in 2006 to 24.20% in the first quarter of 2015. The unemployment rate among youth is even more disturbing and considered to be over 50% due to the sheer number of unemployed graduates and a huge number of youth who have had no chance to go to school roaming about the streets.

“It is worth noting that although educational attainment by Nigerian young people has increased significantly in the last decade, the relevance of curricula, quality of education and the fit with skills required by the job market, still remains a challenge for us as a country.

“Unsuitable qualifications limit our young peoples’ employment prospects and potential to contribute to national development. Our new Administration is poised to providing an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive so as to ensure greater opportunities for jobs to be created for our young people.

“This we believe will assist in reducing criminal activities and terrorism. We have resolved to provide adequate infrastructure and strengthen our job creation institutions in order to increase opportunities for our young people. For Nigeria to sustainably create jobs and ensure growth, we will pay special attention to the growth of our Small and Medium Scale Enterprises. This can be achieved through boosting the intervention funds as guaranteed by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“In order to ensure that young people are healthy, skilled and educationally empowered, we will strengthen our academic and vocational training institutions as well as significantly improve our healthcare delivery system.

“Young Nigerians, let me conclude by reiterating that we are very much committed to fulfilling all our campaign promises. We, therefore, seek your cooperation and patience in this regard.

“Be assured that ‘change’ for us is not a mere political slogan but the beginning of a new era desired by the majority of Nigerians. The youth must therefore be vanguards of this change and at the same time be the change that they wish to see.”

President Buhari also paid glowing tribute to the Nigerian youth for their role in the last general election, describing them “heroes of democracy and architects of change”

“As we commemorate this year’s International Youth Day, let me use this moment to once again pay tribute to all the young people who played significant roles in making the 2015 General Elections a model for democratic governance in Africa. The role you played, individually and collectively, in not only being peaceful members of the electorate but also galvanising the social media platform and mobilizing your peers to make the right choice.

“Your role contributed in no small measure to having a credible election in an atmosphere that was hitherto tense and volatile. The outcome is today being celebrated worldwide.

“Your role is greatly appreciated. I can assure you, my young compatriots, that you have written your names in history and you will be remembered as true heroes of our democracy and as architects of change”, he said.

According to him, two members of the local vigilance group were injured by Improvised Explosive Devices in the attack.
Usman added that the Special Forces discovered piles of street lamps poles cut into pieces by Boko Haram terrorists, which they used in making Improvised Explosives Devices’ during a cordon and search operation around Dikwa.

Politics / Elites Used Boko Haram For Selfish Interest-former Chief Of Army Staff Reveals by abouyusuf: 11:31am On Aug 06, 2015
Few days after his sacked colleague, Alex Badeh, revealed that the military under their leadership lacked equipment, immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah is also talking about their inability to conquer Boko Haram. While giving his valedictory address at the Pulling-Out ceremony held in commemoration of his retirement from service in Abuja yesterday August 5th, Minimah said the elites used the insurgency to further their sectional, political and religious interest.

According to him,

“The insurgency snowballed into a graver dimension because these people exploited the security challenge to further sectional, religious and political interests. In the last decade, we have seen the extent to which people who harbour evil against their fellow co-patriots can go to inflict pain and death on innocent people. This is the time for us to rise in unison not only to condemn but to take actions against the activities of the Boko Haram terrorists and other criminal elements in order to foster peace and security in our society. Perhaps, if we had all stood against the terrorists at the outset through condemnation of their activities and active collaboration with the military to confront them, rather than use it as a tool to advance section, tribal, religious and political interests, we would not have been where we find ourselves today. We must therefore all unite and support our government and security forces to tackle the current security challenges.”he said

Politics / Fayose Will Reply To Impeachment Notice – PDP by abouyusuf: 5:31pm On Apr 07, 2015
The national leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party has said Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State will reply to the impeachment notice allegedly served him by members of the State House of Assembly.

But the party said the notice must be properly served on the embattled governor.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Olisa Metuh, stated this while answering questions from journalists at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

Metuh, however, said it was disheartening that the members of the State House of Assembly whose tenure would expire soon, were bent on causing crisis in the state with their action.

He said, “Fayose would reply accordingly to the impeachment notice if the lawmakers follow due process.

“The governor will respond accordingly when they (lawmakers) do it properly.

“But why are these lawmakers, who have less than one month to leave, in a hurry to sack their governor?

“They have grown wings as soon as the result of the Presidential election was announced. It is immoral and undemocratic for a group of 19 lawmakers to put a state in chaos.”

He appealed to the President-Elect, Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), to intervene in the crisis rocking the state in order to show that “he is truly a born again democrat.”
