Education / Re: 2018/2019 Admission Process Thread Guide by Abrahambyneni: 7:51pm On May 12, 2019
The biggest change I would make is to randomize admissions to help us understand how to make college work better. We have little scientific data on the impact of a student attending one university versus another. It’s generally based on anecdotes. Which makes it hard to improve anything.

It is widely recognized that the top schools get far more qualified applicants than they can accept; the admissions office then invests painstaking effort in selecting a subset of this population. I believe we could gain tremendously if, for example, 100 spots at MIT were set aside to be filled by random selection from the qualified student pool. This would immediately create a purely random treatment group (those accepted to MIT) and control group (those not accepted). Comparing outcomes for the treatment versus the control group would permit us to assess the difference it makes for a given student to attend MIT. It would also let us measure how predictive certain things in the application are of success at MIT (and success afterwords) which would allow us to improve our ability to determine which applicants would do well/benefit from attending here.

What is university ranking?

Any academic institution focuses on imparting best in field knowledge by qualified teachers. But why? The reason behind paying great attention to teaching methodologies and knowledge is to rank high among the best global universities. The trend of ranking is believed to be developed by Americans more than three decades ago. The influence was so dramatic that countries around the world began following the trend and started focusing on the ranking. In the present era, students and professionals are no longer bounded by home borders. The widening of horizon in terms of exploring better and brighter future prospects beyond the local borders have taken a toll over the generation and created the need to enroll in any of the top universities in the world.
